Bangor/Punta
Could someone advise the time frame of B/P ownership of S&W and are the guns made during this period considered inferior?, if so, any ideas why?

This is going to be a long thread. There will be answers to your questions coming soon. I for one, just like saying "Bangor Punta".

Here in Flor- E- Da we have many Puntas due to the Spanish influence.
And they say Taurus copied S&W

I'm no expert but I think they're ownership was mid 60's through the 70's. As for inferior, same designs as todays guns except for the many dashes since then which to me I think means correcting design problems (don't know this for a fact, some may call them refinements) and it's a preference for machined parts in the older models versus MIM parts in the newer models which are supposed to be as good as machined steel parts. In a nutshell it's a matter of opinion! The diehards will say they're all good and the haters will say they're bad!!

Bangor Punta Alegre Sugar Corp bought S&W in 1965.
Lear Siegler bought Bangor Punta in Feb, 1984 because they made Piper Aircraft.
The vast majority of P&R revolvers built on three screw frames were Bangor Punta.

As someone who has owned and sold at least 100, IMO they are as good as anything being made today. Problems are rare - even Cadillacs have a problem once in awhile. Nobody is perfect.

Too Funny... My first S&W was a BP era. When I first became an LEO in the 70s, we furnished our own guns. Guidance on what was approved was either S&W or Colt, 4 inch barrel, .38 or .357. Nothing else!!! Most carried the S&Ws because they were quality guns and if you were on a budget, a little cheaper than the Colt. Over the years, I have personally owned about 10 S&Ws that were built under the Bangor Punta banner. All were excellent guns.

The guns were fine. Quality control still mattered. BUT... The bottom line began to matter a little more. It was under this regime that the most comfortable stocks ever made, the diamond, football targets with the slight coke profile disappeared forever.

Until I joined the forum, I never knew that Marcas Registradas was the Bangor Punta president for the duration of the company's ownership of S&W.
