Actually, I have on a very few occasions. I've still got one out on loan, and its been a few years. I'm thinking it'll not come home. I've got another I loaned to my youngest son. Its a Stoeger coach gun. He's burned a ton of ammo in it and has never cleaned it. I guess I don't want it back. But those were mostly clunkers and the value was minimal. Even though I know not to do it, those were exceptions that keep reminding me not to be stupid.

Now as far as allowing someone else standing next to me to shoot a gun of mine, I have no problem with it. It can even be fun. When I got my first 329 a while back, I was heading for a winter campout, known for maybe some adult beverages and lots of gunfire. Also organic fertilizer freely swapped in the air. So I got out my new gun, all gussied up in some 2nd hand laser grips. So I carefully loaded up 3 of my self defense grade 44 Specials, and then 3 of the heavy duty 300gr bear loads. We have a sucker in our group that always is better than everyone else. If you've got something, he's got better, if you can do something, he can do it better. And he's easy to fish into something.

So I got a cold beer and took a sip, then announced I wanted to shoot my new wizbang 44 Magnum. There was a likely looking tree across the creek, so I drew down on it and fired the first of the Specials. Then loudly complained about the recoil. Then I did it again and again complained. After the 3rd Special, I said I was done, and did anyone else want to shoot it. And like clockwork, the fool took the bait! After the first 300gr magnum, he even commented it hurt a little and was a handful. Then to his credit, he fired the 2nd and 3rd magnum. Then he handed it back to me, saying it sure was a handful. None of us ever expected to hear that from him. So I put the gun away where it could do no more damage (ejecting the empties and carefully tossing them in the fire so there was no evidence.

Then I sat down and finished my beer. One of my very observant buddies was sitting next to me. He said "um, Dick, um, did I hear a slight difference in the sounds of the shots you fired and the ones Davy set off?" My response was "Yep, Wes, you sure were listening closely". His response "that's how I got to be a Detective for all these years." And then we said nothing more about it. He figured the guy deserved the lesson, too.

And a few years ago another guy with enough money to buy and sell most of us wanted to borrow a rifle to take elk hunting. I just said I didn't have one I'd loan out. The guy's been bad mouthing me ever since. Doesn't hurt my feelings. Everyone he talks to that I know figure he's a fool for not buying a gun for himself. All he does is lose any respect others might have for him. When you brag and throw your money around to impress others, it makes no sense to try to borrow stuff you should own.

I have no problem loaning out my guns to my son and 1 very dear friend and his family. That is it. No one else. The way I see it is if you want to shoot then you will save up money and buy the guns just like I did.

I have loaned out shotguns and body armor. Slumlording was a rough business. I still have some guns that would be loaners. And extra armor to lend for that matter.

I know this is thread drift, but here goes: Has anyone ever loaned out a chain saw and had it come back? Ok, and if it did, was it in running condition? Just asking. My assumption is the borrower won't bring it back until it breaks.

Technically, YES.

I've loaned long guns and handguns to CLOSE family members for use without my supervision. Always got them back without having to ask and never had to clean them after I got them back. I've loaned guns to complete strangers while at the range, but only under my CLOSE supervision.

Another reason I said "Technically, YES" is that a friend of mines mother had her house broken into three times. Her son insisted that she get a TN HCP and learn to shoot. The only thing she could shoot comfortably was my M34-1 as she is now 83 and has severe arthritis in her hands. She does not have the hand strength to rack the slide on anything and can't handle the recoil of anything larger than a 22. I "Leased" her the M34-1 for $1.00 per year and had her list in her will that the Nickel M34-1, serial #M19848X was to be returned to me upon her death.

In the two plus years she has had the M34-1 I haven't been paid the agreed upon lease fee. Should I get a court order of repossession?

RBURG: Yes, I loaned one of my employees one of my chainsaws two weeks ago. When the saw didn't come back on Friday I held his paycheck. He came around Saturday morning to bring back the saw and get his check. BTW the chain had been sharpened, correctly, between when I loaned it and when it came back.

I have offered the use of a firearm to people I cherished,
if I thought they were going in harm's way. Usually, I offer
to stand watch through the bad time. It has to be
someone I'd trust with my life, plus, they have to have
a proper respect for all the things that I myself hold dear.
There are very few people I trust that far. Leo or (ex)military.
And those people usually don't need to ask anybody for a weapon.
Hunting guns I'm more lax about, but I've hunted with the
people I'd trust with a firearm. Missing fingers or a pronounced
limp are a hint that maybe there'd be a problem.

Its not even legal in my state, unless I am present or they have a concealed pistol license (in which case they'd have their own gun)

First and only time I lent out a shotgun to a good buddy that was trying to get into 3 gun matches. Came over and picked it up and later that night came over and returned it. Other than that occasion I never loan out any firearm. Frank

The only two people I've loaned a gun to is my mom and brother! Which both I love dearly and trust! If my mom asked to borrow my Glock Tommorow I'd say sure just leave me your 38 to pack around. She's very gun savy, has her Kansas CHL and has been shooting wayyyy longer than me.

As for my brother he's younger than me but grew up along side me learning to shoot like me from our uncle.

Ive borrowed deer rifles to hunt with in the past from my uncle and he never had a problem, he trusts me. He lete borrow his Remington 1100 for a skeet shoot once. When I borrow his guns I return them cleaner than when I received them and I'll usually toss in some ammo.

A while back a buddy of mine bought a kel tec PF9. I've never been a Kel Tec fan. When I said I was going to the range to have some fun with my glock he said hey man stop by and pick up my PF9, you can try it out.... I declined.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on the subject.
I've got a buddy who is like a brother to me and he's
loaned me rifles for deer season and his TC pistol as
well. But we hunt "together" on his farm. I've told him he's
always welcome to anything i have. Outside of him i don't
believe i would loan anything other than a shotgun to a friend who needed one for rabbit or deer season. And he'd have to
be a friend i had hunted or shot with and trusted. But "no way"
to a pistol.

I have an interesting story on loaning handguns out.

A few years ago, my dad bought an old Colt SAA (1890's vintage) in decent shape. Apparently in the 1930's, the owner had let his friend/neighbor borrow it. Well, this "friend" used it to kill the man who was sleeping with his wife at the time, who along with the gun did some time locked away. 20 years later, the rightful owner petitioned to his courthouse asking if he might be able to have his gun back, and without hesitation he was provided with it. Now, the amazing part of this story is that the gun did not rust given that it was likely stored on a shelf somewhere for those 20 years and never cleaned or wiped down since being used in the crime.

Moral of the story though, never let anyone borrow your GUN ever. Not a handgun, not a rifle, no gun at all. It doesn't matter what relation you have, but anytime YOUR gun is not in your sight you do not know what is being done with it. I had a friend ask one time if he could borrow a gun for going on a hike, preferably a small gun he could carry easily... Now, I don't know about you...but if I'm going on a hike, I'm packing a 6 inch .357 Magnum or my 1006..not a small gun. I kindly denied him, stating that it is poor responsibility to loan anybody a firearm.

Yes, If I am there I will pretty much let anybody shoot anything I have with me. I have also borrowed and shot guns that are much more expensive than the ones I had with me from someone I didn't really know. I was asking him questions about it and he just asked if I wanted to shoot it.

I have a couple of .22s out on loan to a good friend for the last couple months. He had young cousin coming into town he wanted to teach him how to shoot. He still has the guns. I am not too worried about it. He has also let me borrow some of his stuff.

These were all common guns not collector pieces.

As for chainsaws, I have let at boss of mine borrow one. He brought it back with 6 extra chains. He was cutting an old porch off his house and hit a couple nails. He felt it wasn't worth the time to try to learn to sharpen them so he just bought a bunch and would change them as needed.

I let a brother in law borrow the same saw. He promptly destroyed it.

Back in the late 70's I stopped in to see a friend (John) while I
was up in Northern Michigan doing some fall trout fishing.

When I get there he was thinking about going partridge hunting and asked if I
wanted to go. I did, but there was one problem, I only had my fishing rods with me.

To him this was no problem whatsoever, he had a 12 ga. I could use,
which had been his grandfather's. Knowing his parents were in their 80's
at the time made me take note of the grandfather comment.

When he comes out with the gun he had this single shot 12 ga. that was, well,
it was old, real old. The first thing I noticed was that the buttstock had a steep angle
coming down from the action, just like some old muzzleloaders I had seen before.

When he handed it to me the conversation went something like this.

Me: What's this?
(asked as I pointed to the wire wrapped around the grip portion of the buttstock.)

John: Oh that. It's broken and every time you fire it the stock falls off.

Me: Every time??

John: Yep.....

He then went on to show me how the two broken, jagged, ends of the stock
fit together, which held it, loosely I might add, for the after shot wire rewrap.

If ever there was a day that I wished a hunt would only be a pleasant walk
in the woods that was the day, but oh no, the birds were just waitin' for us.

He wasn't kidding, the buttstock did fall off everytime I shot that gun....

Nope, I don't loan out firearms. My father bought
my cousin a brand new mossberg 12ga bolt action.
The cousin came home a week later to find the county
PD and FBI searching the house and shed. Seems
the cousin's roommate had sawed off the mossberg
and tried to rob a bank, while he was at work.

Funny, I have my Husky on loan and it has been 3 weeks. Co-worker and I know where he lives....

Back on line....
Great Thread! I answered this thead 3 times in my head and then changed my mind because of different seniros.

I trust my Wife and 2 Brothers, so that is a given.

After taking firearm classes, my opinion changes and I feel for the better. Before the classes I would lend my firearm to a club member and he would lend me his. We both shoot in our booths, not paying attension to one another. 1 magazine and we greet again. No biggie.
Now, I will be his/her RO and not leave until I get my firearm back.
In court, things change. We just bought our house, have 2 newer vehicles and spend money when and how we feel fit. We like the way we live today.
Loaning a pistol at the range to a person that you though knew what they were doing until someone got killed or injured is not worth what She and I have worked our lives for to get.

Ask, What If.

My identical-twin brother and I used to borrow/loan rifles and handguns routinely. We did so for almost 30 years, right up until his death. This allowed us to both enjoy a broader variety of firearms than would otherwise have been the case.

I have loaned out match handguns on occasion, mostly bullseye pistols. I've done it so that a shooter who doesn't own a gun that meets certain rules could compete. I've had a shooter loan me a match pistol when mine broke or I've forgotten to bring the correct handgun. It is pretty common in the competitive shooting community to loan and borrow guns. Usually I give some ammo for the borrower to shoot, as well.

I've borrowed once, maybe twice, loaned about the same, and given away four times. It really depends on the cirumstances and the individual. If l borrow a firearm, or anything, for that matter, l return it in better condition than l received it.

Basically in the people’s republic of NY a strict reading of the law you cannot even touch a handgun unless it’s on your CCWP. People have shot my handguns BUT only in my close proximity!

I have loaned my kids long guns to go hunting before they got their own.
I very rarely loan out items like my car/truck, tools and long guns as I’m very anal about people not taking the care of those items as good as I would.

With that said back in the mid 70s my BIL got hired as a deputy sheriff. This was before the era of police school and political patronage went a long way. (His father was a big shot) He basically just went down to sheriff HQ was sworn in and issued a beat up model 10 as a duty weapon.

I was at his house and he showed me his gun and as I really like my BIL I just happened to have my Ruger Security Six adjustable sight .357 Herrett grips with me. I knew it would fit the model 10s holster and I gave it to my BIL to use till he could get a better gun.

Said he was too good of a person not to have a good gun in a SHTF situation and I wanted him safe. As he was a LEO and at that time could carry any gun that shot .38 rounds he was ok at work with it. Again as he was a LEO it was legal for him to have possession of my revolver, which he carried for about 4 months.

A Friend had a breakin at her home. Her pistol was among the stolen items. I loaned her another while she got her affairs in order and her insurance company got her squared away. She gave it back and all is well. I don't see a problem with it.

The only time I've borrowed a gun was during my teenage years. I must have been about 15. I had a 30-30, but it didn't have an optic. My brother in law offered up his that had a scope and I used it most of the season. I felt lucky be using it and took better care of it than I would have my own.

As for me these days, my guns go where I go and this applies to my truck and tools as well. I'll let most anyone try or use one of my guns at the range as long as I'm standing there with them and I'll come along and help if they need my truck. I just feel responsible for what could happen with my firearms and that's a road I don't want to go down.

I have never in my life borrowed anything from anyone. If I ever lend a gun I will be with the person I lend it to.

I was always told to never loan your gun or your wife. You will never get them back in the same condition
But yes I have loaned guns to family and close friends.

My guns, women and Boston Bruins shirt.

Don't bother to ask, you can't touch or borrow any of them.

Thinking back about my earlier post to this thread.... The rich guy who wanted to borrow a rifle and who I turned down turned out kind of interesting for me. My problem was I had just gone through a downsizing of my gun collection. The only long guns I still had were pretty special to me. I'd given about a half dozen away to my sons. Family guns that needed to stay in the family and adult son's are a good place for them. In all the interesting comments other friends made about the gun and person I wouldn't loan anything to did get back to my wife. She made the comment one day that maybe I should just buy a "loaner" gun so everything I owned wasn't so "special". I listened and filed that tidbit away for future use.

It was less than a year later at a gun show in a small town that I spotted a really nice looking BAR in 30-06, and the price wasn't too bad. I think the guy wanted $600 for it and indicated it could be had for less. It was a little town called Paris, KY, the county seat of Bourbon County (God bless them). So near the end of the day I made another pass around the room when I figured the guys were packing up. Its always a good time to buy if some other scoundrel hasn't bought your gun. And sure enough, the guy was digging out his gun cases and packing stuff up. So I offered him $500 just so he wouldn't have to carry the gun home. Guess I went a little high, because he was all elbows handing the gun over. It was really a nice "loaner" type of gun. The only problem was it was way too nice for me to lend to anyone, ever. It had a single problem, no scope. But it did have the bases and rings. So home it went and momma didn't complain because it was the designated loaner. Her idea and all.

So a while later I was at the big NGD show in Louisville and still looking for a scope. And there on the table was a pretty nice foreign scope. One of those off brand german things by a company so low in the alphabet the name started with a Z. Yep, Zeiss DiaVar. Since it was a semi-auto I figured it was a woods gun. So I bought the scope with the off size tube diameter. Something foreign, too. It said 30mm. So I was out and about looking for some medium height 1 1/4" rings that would fit. And sure enough, I found a set. They went home and I did my best to mount them on the old Browning.

Then one day my son's appeared at the house to go shooting, and wanted me to go along. So at the local range I fired maybe half a box of ammo in the thing. I'd already mounted a mandrel and laser bore sight so I figure it would be on the paper and close. Well, the distance was only 25 yards, but all the shots were maybe within a half inch or so. Good enough for a loaner gun. And since the scope was worth twice what the rifle cost (of course I didn't pay that much), I've decided its not a loaner any more. Besides, who would take care of a nice optic like that?

So I'm back out on the market looking for a good loaner rifle. I kind of like this angle on getting another new gun. Its not for me, its just a clunker I can keep around in case someone really worthy needs to borrow one. I've been going down my list of friends and can't come up with more than one or two that I'd loan anything to. And they have more than enough rifles as it is. Thought I'd share that idea with y'all. Just in case you want a new gun for yourself.

If i know you and i know you know firearms and are a responsible person i have no problem loaning a rifle (big no no with handguns in Pa as far as giving them to other people) . If something cosmetic happens to the rifle so be it. None of them are collectible or valuable. Some people act like its asking for your SS# and back account #.

Very rarely now.

Did loan a fellow officer a Model 19 as he needed a backup/off duty gun. When he returned it, there was rust and other signs it had not been cared for.

I have loaned revolvers to officers going to instructor class, as most officers today do not have the collection officers used to have back in the day.

Those have always been returned cleaned and cared for.

I figure my son's are simply getting an advance on what they will end up with anyway, but other than that no. Some things are to be kept close to home...

I loaned a fellow officer (and good friend) a S&W 49 for deep cover work years ago (he still has it) and my brother a S&W 65 3 inch for carry after death threats ( local DA).

No!

The reason is a neighbor I had 30 years ago asked me if she could borrow a handgun from me as she was living alone and her ex was scaring her.

If she would have known how to shoot and handle a firearm I probably would have at the time. She had never shot a gun before so I told her no. About a week later I opened up the Daily newspaper and there was a picture of her. She had went down to a pawn shop and bought a gun went over to her lawyers office and killed him then herself. It still gives me the willys to think how close I was to lending her a firearm.

I've gone to the range numerous times with people and let them shoot something I have but I'm always there with them.

Loan? Hell no!

I am in the Golden State, I was surprised to learn that it is perfectly legal to loan someone a gun for 30 days. Seems odd when just about everything else (involving guns) is illegal.

There are only a couple of life long friends that I would loan a gun to, because I know how they are about their guns, and possessions. I also know they wouldn't ask. But, if they had all theirs stolen or lost in a fire. I would not think twice about loaning them one, or two. Any of you other yahoos, no. You can't have the mower, or the truck, or any of my records or CDs either.

I'm pretty type A about my belongings so I no longer loan out firearms, tools or vehicles. Too many things have been returned broken, rusted or blown up...

A friend and fellow PD retiree loaned a M34 Kit Gun to his grown son on a request due to an extended fishing trip. Son kept it in his tacklebox the entire time.
After the trip when the tacklebox got tansferred to his car trunk, it took 2-3 weeks for the son to recall that the tacklebox had gotten dunked/submerged when the canoe got tipsy.
The M34 was all but trash.

My 'loaner' deer gun is a specially home-altered SKS Carbine with a cheap 4x fixed scope and adult-sized synthetic stock, and a stock-cuff full of Russian HP ammo. Can hurt the P*S and strangely, has accounted for several deer.
