Default 22 Camping Pistol

I know this involves other brands, but I need some advice. I am looking for a good little 22 camping pistol. Currently using a PT-22 but is a jammer. And as much as I love Smith the current 22 pistol line does not sit well with me. Anyone have much experince with the Browning Buckmark? It looks perfect for my needs but really do not want to shell out 350 on another jam-o-matic!
(And yes, I know a K-22 would be ideal, but I cant find one in my price range)

I've heard lots of love for the Ruger SR 22.

I do love browning but with the high price and just 1 magazine I would (and did) pick up a ruger 22/45 threaded 4" for $309 new.
Good luck in your search.

I will look into that. Just not a fan of the look. If I went Ruger I would go SP101 or Standard Model.

"Handsome is as handsome does". If you actually want to hit something, then one of the Ruger Mk I, II, IIIs is hard to beat.

I agree. I meant the SP-22, I cannot shoot well with an ugly gun. I really love the way the Buckmark feels, just am scared about buying another 22 auto. They seem to jam quite a bit.

As a "Camping Pistol" I have always favored the M63 4" .22 Revolver. It's stainless, durable, reliable, accurate, light weight, and a pleasure to shoot.

I own a few .22 Auto's also, but never thought of them as Camp Guns.

Huh
You're supposed to be looking at the front sight when you're shooting a pistol

OH - Unless your holding it sideways over your head

How about the S&W model 617 .22 caliber revolver? It has a ten shot cylinder and it can be purchased with either a 4 inch or 6 inch barrel. I personally like with the 4 inch barrel.

The Buckmark is a large and heavy gun.

I like the discontinued 422/622/2206/2213/2214 series of handguns, though the black finish is not durable.

The Beretta 70/71 pistols are perfect for your needs but are pricey.

Ruger standard and Colt Woodsman pistols are also large and heavy.

The K22 is a good shooter but heavy, I would prefer to carry a 10/64...and usually do.

Phoenix Arms Hp22 pistols will be relatively small. They are cheap but generally work. Other options include the Heritage line of SA revolvers and older Charter Pathfinders.

You should check out the M&P 22 pistol. I have one and it's awesome. It'll eat just about any bulk ammo and look good doing it. The only ammo I've had a problem with is Winchester HP, but my wife also had issues running it through her Buckmark so I don't blame the gun. It also serves as a good training gun if you have a M&P pistol or an SD9.

I put an Advantage Arms .22 Conversion Kit on my Glock 17 for $250 and it makes a pretty good "Camp Gun".

My choice too. I love this pistol, it eats anything. There was some ammo issues when new, but those have cleared up. Lubrication was one problem, keep it oiled well and it will run well. I use 30w Synthetic auto oil and it really keeps this gun running. Keep the air pressure up in the grips, just kidding. Everyone who has shot my M&P22 said it is just way too much fun. Indeed!

Browning Buckmarks are great shooting pistols. I've had two and really like the way they feel in my hand. They are accurate and reliable shooters. They are easely on par with the Ruger. They have a different grip angle than the Ruger, more like a 1911. I've seen the Camper for about $250 at Bass Pro and Cabelas. Another one to look at is the S&W 22A. It's cheap and also a great shooter. You can't go too far wrong with any mentioned here. It just needs to feel right in your hand.

In 30 years I've had a bunch of .22 LR handguns. The Ruger Mk. II's are very good. In my experience of camping and woods walking, etc., has been the S&W 18-3. It is just simply ideal for my purposes. I have not found anything that approaches it for utility, accuracy, portability and aesthetic satisfaction.

I bought a Buckmark Camper last year for a rimfire shooting league. I absolutely love it! Very reliable, comfortable, and extremely accurate. I shoot it better than my wife's Ruger Mk III hunter. Feels great, shoots great!

I looked "22 camping pistol" in the dictionary and found a picture of a Smith Model 18.

The Buckmark is definitely a good choice. I bought one for my wife and she loves it. It's crazy accurate and comfortable. She outshoots me & my M&P .22 every time and longer distances.

A Ruger M -II'

Take a look at the new 22/45 with aluminum barrel.

http://www****ger.com/products/2245Lite/models.html

It is a great looking gun. If I did not have "several" M II's I would buy one. The Ruger IMHO is the best 22 semi auto for the money. Even better than the Buckmark.

Lots of good advice here. I had a buckmark and it was a very good gun. The only problem I had with it was that the slide opens on both sides and after a few shots, I got powder burns on my thumb. I had to tape the thumb if I was to do much shooting. This is not a common problem, seemed to only happen to me. I sold it and got a Ruger MK III and am totally satisfied with it, however, I believe the S&W 63 or 34 are the best carrying, best shooting guns for your intended purpose. The 650 is also something to be considered if price is not an issue. Good luck finding what you need.

You might consider a Ruger Bearcat also. They are a fine, tiny revolver...

I had a Browning .22 auto called the Challenger years ago. It did indeed jam quite a bit.

I use a Ruger MK II. It usually works.

Frankly, for a camping gun, I'd pick a more powerful item, unless you also want to have a .22 along for plinking and small game. You never know what you'll need to shoot in the woods! I think a .357 with four-inch barrel is about ideal.

I have seen a few of these for sale lately and they are usually under $350 for a shooter.

I do not endorse S&W .22 revolvers. I had a M-34 that I had to literally POUND on the extractor rod with a plastic mallet to extract fired cases.

I called a contact at S&W and he admitted that this has been pretty common for decades. All he could suggest was to polish the chambers and try different ammo brands.

I'll never buy another of those. I'm sure they can't all be that bad, but I got scalded once and I'm not risking the hot water again.

Had the same problem with a Model 18. The problem was unfired powder builds up under the star/extractor and gets in the chambers. For an auto, the only two I have that don't jam are a woodsman and a Ruger MKII. Both are super accurate and dependable.

For all round use and dependability, I would go with a Single Six or a Colt. Colt will be pricey, I expect. The 22 mag gives you a little more of an edge if you need it but gives up a little in accuracy.

Paladin85020, claims a Beretta Jetfire works well for hiking, should work for camping too.

I bought my 317 Kit Gun for camping/backpacking. 8 rds and weighs about nothing. Trigger pull sucks but I understand that can be fixed.

My camping gun is usually a 32 S&W Long. I like camping in cold/cool weather and loading a 22 with even light gloves is frustrating for me. However, in warm weather a stainless Taurus revolver gets a workout from us.

I have 3, a Model 17-nuthin', a 617 4" 10-shot, and a Ruger MKIII Target (had a MKII also but my wife "adopted" it. Fine by me.)

Part of the fun of shooting all these guns is actually enjoying the difference between them, IMO. If I want to shoot a piece pf precision machinery that is a Smith, I can do that. But with the Ruger being a totally different critter from a wheelgun but still able to deliver the goods, I'm all about it.

It's kinda like having 2 different routes to get home but they're both beautiful in their own seperate ways.

Honestly, the toughest to shoot? The '58 Model 17. Go figya.

I'd call these 3 "camping pistols". Other 22LR on hand are more target pistols.

S&W 2214, Taurus 94ULSS 2", Taurus 94 4"

I still like the S&W revolvers. This is my 63 and I haven't had any ejection problems. It has replacement Badger grips for my big hands.

This one is a little harder to find and usually not cheap. S&W model 18.

I bought an old High Standard Sentinal off of Gunbroker a while back. I paid less than $200 and once I touched up the missing bluing, filed the Tee off of the front sight and decided to leave the Franzite stocks alone I was done. It is a 9 shot DA revolver, 4" bbl and shoots a sub 2" group @ 25 yards. One cylinder is off a little as it puts the other 8 into 1 1/4". If it got rained on, hauled all day in a wet holster or fell into the river while canoeing it would not be the end of the world.

I'll second that.

No extraction problems here.

That's enough information there.

i'll put in another vote for the bearcat. i used a walther p22 with the short barrel for a camping gun for a long time, but recently replaced it with a stainless bearcat, and i love it. very tiny, classic 6-shooter, light enough, extremely accurate. i have a black floral-carved "western" looking holster with a hammer-thong, that rides kinda high, and it is just about perfect!
i love the little rascal!

Have not been camping in years but should try it again. I need to slow down and relax a bit. When I do, I would take either my 650 or 651 M.R.F.

Define "Camping Gun".

Are you shooting up some old pine tree with the kids?
Conceal carry?
Shooting a rabid animal?
Protecting your smores?

I like my J frame .38.

I'm in line with those who are recommending a S&W .22lr revolver. Camping can get wet and dirty, I would think stainless steel gun. My choice would be a 4" M63.

My new "camp" .22 is in the shop being modified. When done, it will (still) be a Ruger MK III Hunter with the fluted 6 7/8" barrel, threaded to accept a suppressor (paperwork in progress), with a Novak Picatinny rail under the barrel to mount a weaponlight, and a Burris FastFire red dot reflex sight mounted in the rear sight dovetail, magazine "safety" removed. Size and weight are not a consideration in the sort of camping I typically do, i.e., out of a truck or boat of some sort. Meanwhile, a 617 is serving just fine...

There's an option available that allows you to see the front sight while holding it sideways.

Back about 1990 I bought one of these. They had a 7 shot and 8 shot version. Parts made in West Germany, imported into the U.S. and assembled.

Mine has been excellent. They suggested for 100% functioning to use "hyper-velocity" ammo like CCI Stingers. And they work as specified in mine. However I also tried out a number of cheap standard velocity .22s that would function reliably and found that Remington Thunderbolts worked well.

It cost under $200.00 back then and they show up on the gun auctions for around $200.00 now.
