Default Have Forum guns sales slowed?

I don't know if this can even be answered but..
it seems there are a lot more guns put up for sale on this forum that are "Not" selling or are getting little or no action. (I haven't tried to sell on here yet) Whereas 2-3 months ago it "seemed" like what ever popped up got sold fairly quickly...
JMO.. what do you think?

I don't spend much time in the Classifieds, but I have made the same observation myself. On a couple of other boards I have noticed handguns either not selling or selling for a little less than the first of the year.

Gun sales always slow down this time of the year, especially on collector type guns.
It will start full bore again in the fall.

I bought one yesterday (a 431) and one today (a Lew Horton 27-8) and 6 others in the last month (629 TALO, .25 Baby Browning/.380 cal of 1971 Browning, 386, and 2 S&W Pro Shop 1911's) from good folks on this forum, so I am doing my part for the brethren.

I have seen more guns priced above what I consider market lately, and think this has contributed to them sitting unsold.

I think it's dependent on the gun and the price point. Most things that are a good price last maybe a day, maybe two. As with anything else, if it's a bargain it seems to sell quickly!

Gun Sales have slowed down in general.
Sales at the shows have all but stopped, and stuff here, GB and other sites keeps getting reslisted.
Not only the guns, but look at the quality leather that goes begging. And there is a whole new breed of leather workers with their idea of what a holster should look like and their stuff is jst sitting there. Being a traditional leather guy I like the classic Galco, Bianchi,
El Paso Saddelry designs and not something that looks like it belongs on Star Wars or in Sci-Fi films.
That is what happens when a Fed gets old, fat, retired and opinionated. My number 2 son used to call his grandfathers Old Fogers,
guess I am now included in that group.

I probably paid a little more on a couple of guns --- but have learned when buying guns, antiques, duck decoys at auction -- you may never get another chance. Case in point: I was bidding on a rare Koelpin bronze of a duck hunter with a dog and decoys in a duck boat, bucking
the waves at a Copley Fine Arts auction (Steven O'Brien Galleries summer auction) -- the bronze was only one of only 25 ever cast --
I quit bidding at close to $10,000 -- it went for a few thousand more --
and I kicked myself for months afterwards (antique duck decoys and sporting bronzes keep increasing in value every year, so I would have done ok if I had stayed in the bidding). By sheer blind luck, (and a good relationship with the gallery and the owner and his daughter, as I have purchased many pieces from them) --they found one of the other Koelpin bronzes (another of the 25 cast) and I bought it immediately.
Remember the old Greek saying: "He who hesitates, is lost".

I have seen prices skyrocket on most boards, and sales plummet. About what is to be expected.

Many think the election panic will start any day now, and they are pricing their stuff accordingly.

I have been mostly selling recently, but have one Item I would like to buy, may wait a year (or forever) before getting serious if prices don't return to some semblance of realism.

(not referring to this board's classifieds, I buy local only)

I think a lot of sellers have unrealistic ideas about the worth of their guns.

I just bought a 1934 Remington 31R on Gunbroker for a lot less than what I expected.
Good guns at good prices sell quick:

I would agree forum sales are slowing. I listed all three at once on local texas forums and one national forum. I sold two at a a gun show for my asking price after the pistols were on the forums for a month. I sold the third pistol on the texas forum the next week. My prices are generally reasonable to good in my opinion, never crazy dollars.

I haven't bought any off the forum or any of the auction sites in quite awhile. The reason is I have most of the stuff I want and something would really have to get me excited to make me want to bid on it....and prices are too high. I was riding down the street Thursday and saw a sign at a auto repair shop that read GUNS FOR SALE. I stopped and went in to look around. I found that I knew the seller. He was fixing to close the shop and retire and was going to sell everything, starting with his guns. It was mostly stuff I wasn't interested in until he pulled out a 4" nickel S&W model 19 and a blued 4" model 15. I've got several 15's but somehow I'd lost several 19's while trading around. The 19 went home with me and he threw in a box of .44 special hollowpoints and a box of 10 mm Silver Tips. Last week I found a guy walking around a gun show with a stainless steel nickel plated Winchester marine riot type shotgun. I was not looking for one of these but it was "purty" and the price was right. A little Mother's silver polish and it looks brand new. "The best deal you find is the one you aren't looking for." The point I'm trying to make here is I don't need a classified or an auction as long as I have a little patience or I get there first on a buy it now that's priced right.

Unless the price is reasonable, the gun will not sell. You have to consider that you will have to pay the price of the gun plus shipping plus FFL transfer fee. I will only buy guns that are reasonable after all of the costs are added in.

When I'm cruising the ads, I've looked at the number of posts the seller has. I see a LOT of folks who haven't been here very long. I think it's great they come here, I think it's great they're selling some interesting guns, but most of them seem overpriced and if PM'd they don't want to deal. OK for them, but don't be surprised if the items don't move!

Same observation - a lot of ads lately by folks with just a post or two breathlessly extolling the virtue of a wonderful opportunity to buy their treasure at an inflated price.

I guess it's partly true what the curmudgeons complain about that we create our own inflation here to some extent. But that's only true in the sense that a lot of folks here deal in really high end good condition stuff and those who know what they're looking at have learned that while paying a bit more is painful it's not a deal killer if the goods are as promised and available.

Contrast that with the "hit and run" artists [as I call them] who somehow learn that (for instance) "model 28's seem to be bringing top prices" on the S&W forum. Next thing you know, we have a new "member" who's asking a price worthy of a pre-28 in 99% condition with the box and all the extras, for his crapped out 28-2 with a cold blue job, sideplate scratches from holster wear, no box, and no tools or papers. Oh, and by the way, shipping is extra.

I know everyone has to start somewhere and I readily confess the selling/buying of a gun was the impetus for my interest in coming to the forum in the first place. But the tale is usually told when you see someone with 3 post counts who is never heard from again or someone who has been a member since 2005 and has 8 posts with 5 of those being from classified ads.

Election coming, economy still crummy despite politicians passing rainbows like gas and a lot of folks already have most of what they're looking for. Prices do hit saturation point, especially for nimrods who think Gun Broker asking prices are indicative of the market.

A lot of gun show prowlers and gun club commandos I've known share the same traits - you'll never convince them their guns are not worth what they're asking so you just wish them good luck on their sale and move on. Same on here - you just don't have the awkward part of trying to get away from these folks in person.

I listed a couple of Smiths here in the last couple of months that did not sell. One was a Model 10 and the other was a .32 auto (the .32 was collector quality). No action or interest on either one. Pics were nice and descriptions were honest. These were very high condition guns. I wanted to give forum members first crack at 'em. I eventually withdrew them and sold the 10 to a friend and the .32 auto sold in less than 24 hours on GunsAmerica. Prices realized were in line with what they listed for here.

I will continue to offer items here that I think the forum members would be interested in. This is where I have gained so much knowledge and have enjoyed the comaraderie.

To add to what was mentioned in previous posts: Some great guns have shown up in the classifieds for sale by "newbies" at realistic prices. You just never know.

Thanks L. Jarrett, for the ability to buy, sell, chat, converse, learn.

I had a couple for sale here recently that did not sell. I believed they may have been too high. But only because I bought them a bit too high. It turned out well though as I really didn't want to see them go. I originally bought them cause I liked them. I was just trying to sell to fund another gun. You see that a lot as far as reasons folks are selling. Luckily I liquidated some other stuff and now will be able to get my new gun and also keep the ones I previously had for sale. Notice how may posts there are on guns you regret selling.
But while were on this subject, I'd like to express my gratitued for having a platform whereby we can all buy and sell. I hope we never take that for granted. It is a TREMENDOUS perk on this forum.

I just bought a model 396 here on the forum and the price was pretty close to another 396 that got away from me on GB!! I also watch how many posts a forum member has, but once in a while I will take a leap of faith. I got a NIB model 631 from a forum member that had ONE POST!! He was a CAS shooter, he gave me the name and numbers of some gun shops he did business with and he was good to go with them. The deal with through without a hitch. Now there was a Registered Magnum posted a while back, that guy had ZERO posts. I let that one by!!

Like it was said, a lot has to do with the time of year, it's spring. summers comming...
There's vacations, kids off school..And it's big home improvement time of the year..
people just don't have the extra or want to spend right now..

I'm in the same boat, doing an addition on the house. but, feel the need for a 1911... just can't justify buying one with out selling off something else to offset the cash layout..

and I can't sell of any Smith's can I? that would be just silly...

As I see it:

Lots of posters with only a few posts or who have been here only a short time. They may be honest, reliable and wonderful, but I will let someone else take the chance on sending them money.

Lots of routine, run-of-the-mill guns that one can buy, often for less (given shipping and FFL fees) from the LGS. I've seen a couple of used ones I thought I could buy new for less.

I posted an LCP with lots of accessories here, was told I was too high (it was a model that is hard to find at the LGS) and lowered my price.

bbtrout made an offer and I liked the way he offered, I liked the fact he'd been here a while and I liked his positive feedback, so I accepted his offer. Perfect transaction.

Sometimes, however, there's a gun or guns that everyone knows are too high and they just go BTT, BTT, BTT "forever." Some sellers are just unrealistic.

But, this is still the best forum for info, for buying and selling and for conversation. Not perfect, but pretty close.

Bob

With shipping, FFL fees, and my gunsmith tune up added in I figure an additional $100.00 to any online purchase.
In the last year I've looked at lots of guns for sale, but have only purchased two. A M-27 and most recently an M-19. Both were revolvers I had wanted for sometime and both were fairly priced.

Don't know how it's going with adds, but I took 4 pistols and 3 rifles to the Ft Worth gun show. Only brought one pistol home (a Browning 1900, sorta surprised it didn't sell). Brought all three rifles home. I'll try again at Dallas next month.

I have not bought Smith in some time, but I have picked up on some strange things going on in the market. Certain milsurps online, even run-of-the-mill stuff, has been selling for stupid money while other more collectible pieces get little interest. Now in my favourite pawn shop, the prices vary from OK to "Say WHAT!!" I am guessing then latter are over-priced consignment items. One thing I have noticed if that a shop is overrun with milsurps, dig deep and buy two because there can be a bulk discount.

As for the stuff selling for crazy money, how is it all these "suckers" have much more disposable income than me? They must be doing something right.
