Believe CR or not, it's amazing how many dogs and cats have survived/thrived in the past 50 years or more on so called "junk pet food, it's all marketing, yuppy hype. Remember when it was pretty much only Purina or Alpo??
Don't pay a premium for 'premium' pet food

True to a point. However, many dogs are allergic to corn, wheat and soy. There are others but those are the most common. Allergic dogs will benefit from a grain free food or a food that doesn't contain those three.
Cheaper foods also usually contain more fillers & additives. Somebody mentioned a pile of sawdust. That is "fiber." This "fiber" can actually be beneficial to some dogs. We fed our diabetic foster Science Diet W-D. It's a weight control food with an ingredients list that is pretty shocking. But it's slow to digest, which makes blood sugar more easily controlled with insulin. Makes for some enormous piles of poop though.
I'd be happier if the law was more strict re honesty about where the ingredients come from. "Made in USA" is absolutely meaningless. Companies KNOW we want American made so that's what they put on the bag. But cheap **** from China is "Made in USA" if the stuff is combined and bagged here. Get it? "MADE" in USA.
The whole poisoned pets thing a few years ago was absolutely dollar based. The Chinese used Melamine as an additive because it artificially boosts protein numbers cheaply. Melamine is poison, period.

The quote about Purina:
"We haven't used Purina since I had a project near one of their plants. There was a big pile of sawdust outside the doors. Don't rightly know what they used it for, but I'm not takin' chances with my critters....."
There is no proof it is used in their food, perhaps it is used to clean up oil spills, grease on the floor whatever.
In my previous post look at the PAST recalls of food. I do not see Sams or Purina most are Blue Diamond and some of the Super brands sold by Vets and Pet stores(Merrick, Iams,Blue Bufalo,Natures Variety, Ukanuba)

Exactly so. For those of us old enough to remember, the old time mom and pop butcher shops all would throw down sawdust on the floors every morning for just this reason.

Does anybody give their dog people food anymore?

Ran across a website like this about 6 years ago and was shocked to find out how horrible most popular brands of dog food really are.
Switched my crew to Candidae All Life Stages, everyone likes it and does well on it.
Even so called "premium brands like Iams and Science Diet are absolute ****.
What ever dog food you feed, at the very least make sure it doesn't have any corn products in it. If you feed your dogany foods containing corn, you are slowly killing it.

As I said, I don't know what they used it for. The pile was about 30 feet tall. Musta been a heck of an oil spill!

My dogs have always eaten Eukanuba and they won't eat anything
else. Well they also like chicken and livers from KFC.
We also buy them "Dingos" treats at Wallyworld for their teeth
and the vet says it is doing a great job.

I don't know anything about a pile of sawdust at Purina, but cellulose used in dog food (people food too) is from ground up trees. I'm sure the process is more sophisticated than running a chain saw through a pine tree in my backyard, but the term "sawdust" is essentially what it is.

My dog Rudder the 12 year old opinionated Westie eats better than I do. Ever since our vet lady said he had allergies he eats this expensive fish/potato/gluten free stuff. My wife will make him boiled chicken if he gets bored with that. Meanwhile, I'm getting whatever peanut butter is on sale that week.
But my mother was worse. My dad worked in the oil industry, and they acquired Sheba the Chow in Singapore. All dogs entering that country/island have to be in quarantine for 6 months. The previous owner stopped taking care of the dog. My Mother found out, and started going down to the quarantine facility and taking care of the dog(this was how it was done, the authorities would shelter but not feed the animal). At the end of the 6 months, the Singapore custom service gave her the dog, which was her plan.
By the time they returned to the USA, Sheba was getting a full breakfast every morning of scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast (no jelly-Sheba didn't like it and made a mess on her muzzle with it). I was married and living in a separate state, but would visit on occasion. It was always pleasant getting up and smelling a delicious breakfast like I had growing up. I would come downstairs in anticipation rubbing my hands together, only to be told, "Thats not your breakfast, thats Sheba's. I will make you something when I get thru with hers." Often I got toast with yep, whatever peanut butter was on sale that week.
Regards, Bill S

And pretty much same thing goes for people if they are eating commercially grown corn.
ANY corn products you or your pets eat should be non-GMO. It's not exactly easy to find either unless you grow it yourself, and even then it still might be from GMO seeds. The latest GMO corn has been modified to make the stomach of the pest insects that eat it rupture. They say it's safe for people to eat...but the lab animals eating this GMO corn are having organ failures. I'm sure it will cause problems for pets and people who eat it.
Most pet foods have all the nutritional value cooked out of them and have too much grain in them.
We use Iams, simply because that's the only thing the adopted furslug will eat. I've tried everything. Fish, chicken, ham, beef, eggs, raw milk and cream...Iams only.

I eat a lot of brown rice and white meat chicken (if I say breast I'll get a demerit). My two dogs love it. The little dog goes absolutely berserk when pull the chicken out of the icebox. She dances in circles and crys like I'm stepping on her tail. I feed them a little piece of chicken and the bigger dog takes it like a nice doggy. The little one I have to feed like you would a horse an apple. Shes like a mini Barracuda when it comes people food.
Mine get dry food only. This breed is susceptible to tooth problems. I give them a little fish oil once in a while to keep them from drying out.

Blue, Wellness----any foods on that tier are excellent and well worth the money. My larger dog gets Taste of The Wild Prairie Formula. It's a small step below Blue, but just affordable for a larger dog. It's sold at Tractor Supply stores, which is a plus. Only quality foods for my dogs!
