9x19 for coyotes
What would you consider the best 9x19 load for coyote? The coyotes have been getting bolder in our area with a couple surprising my neighbor on her back porch. At close range I’ve always preferred #2 buck but my wife wants me to set up the HiPoint 995 with and illuminated dot sight for her. Shots with the 9mm carbine would be in the 30-40 yard range so any recommendation on loads?

Just about any 9mm load will kill a dog/coyote.

Yep. I'd use anything you'd put in a handgun for self defense. Most of 'em are moving pretty fast and will make themselves larger upon impact, so it'll do a pretty good job on a coyote. And she ought to be able to hit one with the HP carbine. Sounds like a good setup.

If you can find it, I'd probably go with the 147 grain JHP, as I like a heavy bullet in 9mm, although as the other posters pointed out any 9mm round should be effective.

the lightest bullets as fast as you can safely load them. heavy bullets won't have as much of an immediate effect on coyotes. coyotes can take a lot of shooting sometimes to convince them they are dead

I have a 995 and it shoots Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P very well. It will hold a 1-1.5 inch group at 50 yards using a red dot from the bench and cycles flawlessly. Just make sure it is legal to shoot varmints with 9mm in your state. I know it's not in NV.

I've killed a few with various of the +P 124 JHP loads and they all worked fine. Gold Dots are good, but I think most anything other than a FMJ in that weight should be excellent. I'm not so sure you actually need the +P load - I just happen to have them around so I used 'em.

Thanks for the suggestions. Now that I think about it I have a couple boxes of Speer Gold Dots left over from when I used to CCW a 9mm. In Ohio there are no restriction on what you can hunt varmints with other than you CANNOT use anything full auto or a silencer. While a lot of people seem to look down on the Hi-Point carbines mine has been totally reliable and my wife shoots it very well.

I wouldn't "waste" good Gold Dots on them, Any brand HP out of the carbine should work. Some Wally Mart Remington Or White Box JHP should do the job. 115 or 124 gr to keep the velocity up there.

It was the Ruger LCP.
They have since released the Coyote Special version of the gun.

Ya might want to try Federals 115gr. JHP load, it's standard pressure and has a good reputation for expansion. Or S&B 115gr. JHPs.
Something that violently expands is what's needed on these pests. Dale

I've killed a number of coyotes with a .22 Ruger MKII with 4 inch barrel. Any 9mm will put 'em down.

I would shoot the lightest & fastest 115gr rounds you can find. They aren't much over 8 inches in width. Explosive expansion is what you are looking for. If you can hand load, you may try copper plated bullets that would almost explode on contact. We learned NOT to shoot them with ball 223 ammo. Goes right thru them. V-Max, they drop right there.
