Today I received an email from Paypal. It stated that I was approaching my "limit" and that I would have to become "verified" apparently to ensure that I was who I said I was...?
From what I read, they want me to link them to a bank account "for better security".

They already have my credit card info. Why do they need a bank account? My first thought was...this is BS. My second thought was to open a savings account with a $10 balance.

I used to buy from Ebay, but not much since the big dealers took over.

Has anyone had this same problem? How did you handle it?

Paypal and ebay are a joke. I sold a lot of stuff early on, got out of it in 2004 because of the fees and paypal. Apparently now they wont even let you sell something without using paypal. Ridiculous.

There are a large number of "pfishing" attempts that arrive as Emails supposedly from "PayPal". When you click on the embedded links, they go to a site that steals your personal information that just looks like Paypal.

Your Email may be legit, but be very careful.

Ebay OWNS Pay pal , that's why all this stuff goes on with them. They get a PC on the Ebay side AND the pay pal side...it all goes in the same pockets. Who is ANYONE to tell me how I have to take payment....... or send it.

^^^ This. I get these emails and I don't even use Paypal.

I get a lot of these phony emails, too. I just delete them.

I, however, love Paypal. It lets me pay someone immediately and they can then, immediately, ship the item to me.

Or, I can get paid quickly, too. I simply build in the relatively small amount for their fees in my price.

I follow their rules to use their pay plan and don't use it for firearms.

I also do not use the "gift" option when selling something since,if you do that, no matter how you slice it and dice it, that makes you a thief.

That's a Phishing message, of course. Forward to [email protected] and you will get back message from PayPal saying it's phony. Paypal has always worked well for me for low cost items I buy on auctions, etc. Ed.

PayPal and ebay.
They are what they are.

They pulled us along for years, and they grew HUGE.

Still, it is the quickest, simplest way there is to sell to most of the world, or buy from it.

They DID start taking their share-
ebay gets 9, Paypal about 3, so when it is done, they have raked about 12%, maybe 13% with added auction features.

I'm not as fond of them as I used to be.

They DO require that you do it their way.
It is just a straightforward business deal- they set their terms and you can use them under those terms, or not.
I don't see anything to get upset about. Every company on earth is that way.

Paypal wants users to list a bank account as that becomes the default form funding your purchases. Every time you make a purchase and want to use your credit card, you have to opt for credit card payment, otherwise your bank account is funding the purchase. When they withdraw funds directly from your bank account, they save the approximately 3% service fee that they are charged when you use your credit card to fund your payment via Paypal.

Did the email address you by name, or did it just say dear paypal customer? A legitimate Paypal email will always address you by the name you've given them; "Hello John Smith". Not saying that's the only red flag, but if it doesn't have your name in the salutation it's a pfish for sure.

When I first set up a PayPal account, I went to a local bank that I did not deal with otherwise and opened a free checking account. They gave me a Visa ready teller card with the account and I have never ordered any checks but just use it only for PayPal transactions. I generally keep about $10 in the account.

Just log in to your account. There is probably a message there urging you to get "verified". I did it - its no biggie.

You give them your bank info (at your account page, not in response to an email). They then make two small deposits into your account - usually less than 20 cents each. You check with your bank, and respond to Paypal with the amounts they deposited. Voila - you're "verified".

Paypal gets bashed a lot, but they are pretty much the only game in town if you want to buy or sell on eBay.

I've bought a lot of guns with the money I've made selling on eBay.

There's another risk in linking a bank account to PayPal. PayPal gets hacked at times. I know for a fact, because somebody made an unauthorized withdrawal from my bank account through PayPal.

This happened several years ago. I had no PayPal transactions and had a zero balance in my PayPal account. One morning I found that somebody had lifted $800.00 from my bank account by way of PayPal. I had an email from PayPal saying they thought something was suspicious. Well, it damn sure was!

I had to lodge a complaint with PayPal. They took their precious time in investigation. Finally, a week or so later, the money was restored to my account. I asked for an explanation from PayPal and got nothing. I didn't even get an apology. They had breached my bank account yet gave me no information of what their investigation revealed. I thought that was pretty unprofessional.

Once Ripoffpal has your checking account number, that becomes the default payment method, and you have to click through two pages of "just say no" to get it back to your credit card.
I got ripped off that way one time because I was in a hurry and not paying enough attention, and they took the payment out of checking.
The deal went bad, and Ripoffpal was NO help getting my money back.

I went to my bank and asked what was the smallest account I could set up for my kid. They said they had a special account for children as a service that can have any amount over $5.00 in it.

I set one up. I put in $6 and let ebay verify it. They will put a penny it it and take it out so they can verify that they can take your money and "pay you" money.

Like others have said, their site, their rules.
