No guns signs in Louisiana
I received a pm from SaxonPig today and he questioned me regarding seeing a lot of no guns signs when he visited Louisiana. I live in New Iberia which is about 30 or so miles from Lafayette LA. I can recall only seeing about three places where these signs were posted. The mall in Lafayette either used to or still does have this sign. However there are more than a couple entrances that do not have these signs. Anyone from LA care to comment on this?. I've been to this mall, and lots of other places and do not recall any of them that stand out as having there signs. Frank

I think that the 'no gun' signs on so many businesses in Louisiana, especially in New Orleans, have helped to make the place the crime-free mecca it is.

Earlier this week I walked by, not into, one of the rattiest bars in Morgan City (and that's saying a lot) it had a sign scrawled next to the door.
"No guns
no knives
no drugs"
You can't bring a gun into a bar anyway, but what's wrong with a little stabbing or two?
Happily "No Guns Allowed" signs aren't seen much around here.

No, not that high class place, this one is down by the river next to the railroad tracks.

So's we were out on a Friday night, enjoying an adult beverage or two. And we decided to stop at a dive in Dayton, Kentucky. The bartender knew us from the river (river folks tend to stick together and prefer drinking on the water.) The bar was an "L" shape, and we took the branch to the side. There was a rowdy group the other way and we wanted alcohol, not a fight. So the main combatant got his arse tossed out the front door, much to the relief of everyone. All went quiet and about a beer later a shotgun blast shattered the front door. A few of the patrons down that way took a pellet or two. The normal lazy locals were there pretty darn quick. Everyone knew who did it, and he was gone. But the neighboring PD took it upon themselves to toss cold water on the party. Then the Chief of the town took over and ordered everyone to put the contents of their pockets on the bar, right between their hands that had better be on the bar, too.
When he came to me, he asked me what that little knife was I'd been totin'. Then told me to put all that stuff away before I embarrassed myself any more. That if I wanted a real knife, I should ask the bartender for some help.
We decided our drinking needed to be done at river bars, not up on the streets. But about a week later we stopped in the afternoon to talk to the bartender. We were just interested if anything had come of the little scuffle. He said no, the cops knew it wasn't his fault. Except for tolerating the jerk who did it. Then as we were leaving he called us back. He pulled a big old beer case out from under the bar, laughing all the time. He told me to pick out a proper pig sticker from the one's he'd confiscated over the years, just so the locals wouldn't feel sorry for me. That was maybe 35 years ago.

Rumor has it that years ago, in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana,
("Bloody Tangipahoa") !!, upon entering a bar room, ("beer
joint"), each patron was searched at the door for a gun or a knife. If you didn't have one on you, one would be issued to you before you entered.

Very interesting. I used to frequent a "gin mill" that you used to have to walk over the dog pack (real dogs) just to get in the door. Another was so bad you would need full auto preferably belt fed just to get a beer.
And thanks for the varied and interesting posts. Frank

Actually, I have seen very few "no gun" signs in Louisiana and I travel the state (north to south, east to west) every week -- we have a strong CCW law (shall issue state) and open carry is legal, plus we have a new constitutional amendment pending passage next week to furthur strengthen the right to possess/carry firearms (not that we needed it, although it is designed to prevent judges from "interpreting" the right to possess firearms statutes).

Are those signs even legally binding in LA?

Brings to mind the old Rodney Dangerfield joke about what a rough neighborhood he was raised in. He said, "Boy, it was so rough, when you went into a bar in my neighborhood, they frisked you at the door to see if you had a gun or not. If you didn't, they gave you one before you could go inside.

Nipster, yes those signs have the legal standing and you can be arrested.
Seems kind of stupid as most down here carry concealed anyway. Another little rule is watch were you sit in a restaurant, some of these places have bars and as a rule nothing ever happens but I sit as far as I can. Ruby Tuesday's comes to mind. Frank

Half of the folks in New Orleans carry, a sign isn't going to bother them too much.
