Default GUNS...DO YOU TELL THE SPOUSE EVERYTHING?

Are you open and above board.."Hi honey, I just bought a new to me K frame. It only cost me $450." Or do you keep a secret stash for those impulse buys or something you're saving up for. Does the wife know about everything that's in the safe? I personally take the high road and let her know. That being said, I have to beg forgiveness from time to time. Suspicion is a bad thing in a relationship and makes her wonder what else have I not been telling her. I really don't want to go there.

My wife knows I keep a stash for whatever may come up whether guns or auto needs or more recently dental care for her. She gets as excited as I do when I bring home a new gun which just fuels the addiction. No secrets, no questions. Life is good.

When my sweet bride and I first married...It was even-steven all the way.

Somewheres bout the second or third week,
I went down to Sears & Roebuck, bought her a brand new automatic washer and dryer.
Picked up myself a new Belgian Browning Sweet Sixteen automatic shotgun whilest I was at it.

Works for me, most times.

Now in days...She don't count my guns & stuff and I don't count count her diamonds & stuff.
If she wants a new car or sum such...She don't have to ask me, she just goes and buys it.

If I want a new gun, horse, pickup truck...I jest go get it.

When the day comes when I have to get premission from a woman or a state to do (buy) sumthing,
I'll jest leave one or both.

Su Amigo,
Dave

I tell her everything. I'm getting pretty old and if anything should happen to me I sure don't want her finding "hidden" guns, have no basic knowledge of what they are, what they're worth, what to do with them etc. That's burden she doesn't need.
I've pared down my collection to the "must have" and "must keep" and she knows exactly what to do with them in such an eventuality.

Isn't that what marriage is all about?? It's worked for us for the last 47 years. She shoots better than I do, she reloads and loves to go gun shopping....and she cleans her own guns to boot!

She will understand all when she goes into the safe(s) and finds the inventory binders with purchase receipts, pistol permits associated (state of NJ), blue book entries, and all of the items in question safely and lovingly tucked away.

When I met my current bride, I quickly found out her idea of a cool date was a road trip, making a circuit of numerous gun shops and doing what she called 'fondling the guns'. And she owned a gun safe before I came along. Had a CC Permit before I did.

How can you NOT marry a girl like that? It even made up for the fact that she's from up North.

when I buy a gun for lets say 600 buck the wife would get to pick something out that cost 600 bucks. When a friend would see a new gun with me they would say nice gun what did that cost you I would say 1200 bucks, they would shake their head and say " boy did you get taken" I would reply Yah I know but it came with a leather couch. I got a lot of weird looks from some of the guys at the range.

My wife knows where the key to the safe is; where my firearm inventory is; when I make a purchase; etc. She has called me when she sees a garage sale where they are selling firearms so I can swing by. She shoots with me and enjoys it, too. I am thoughtful in my purchases, as she is, and make sure we are not going into the poorhouse or spending too much. She has her own firearms, too.

I have nothing to hide from her; she has full access to, and full use of, almost all the firearms and ammo. Some of the ammo is kept for historical interest (certain WWI era ammo, etc.) and she knows not to shoot that up. Anything else is fair game.

I'm just glad she hasn't figured out that I got the better deal when we were married!

I don't understand having to keep any secrets from my wife. If I had to do that I would have left her where I found her. Still married to the same old woman for 43 years. Larry

Samuel Clemens said, "Honesty is our most precious commodity and we should, therefore, use it sparingly".
Having said that, I never hide anything from my wife.

I don't tell my wife about every gun I buy but she knows I spend some spare overtime money on them. Likewise I don't question her buying either. Now when we were younger and money tighter we didn't do such things and I didn't buy many guns either. During those times we discussed my rare gun buy and I used the layaway plan mostly.
We both share the gun safe as she keeps valuables there and knows what I have. I suppose I could check out what she has there to if I had a mind to.
We also have seperate and joint bank accounts for simplicity but give each other access to all. She can check my gun account anytime she wants and would currently see it's $34.00.
We both get UPS shipments too and sometimes she'll ask about a heavy one and I'll tell her it's ammo. She'll tell me to be careful lifting it. Other times I'll tell her they are gun parts and she's good with that too.
I built three ARs and was getting quite a few packages for a while there. She asked what they were all about about and I told her. She did say that's a lot and be careful of your spending.

She has handled or fired everything in the safe at one time or another. In spite of that, I don't think she knows the grand total because so many are similar looking.

Been married over 40 years and my wife also has her CCWP and shoots.

With that said she knows I buy and sell/trade guns on occasion, but she does not know just what’s in the Fort Knox. (It’s better that way)

There is a copy of the numbers required to get in the safe, it’s in our safe deposit box at the bank.(she knows this) That way if I die suddenly the safe can be opened without damage. I keep a log of each gun that I own regarding info like date purchased, who purchased from, amount paid and IMHO current price.

Nothing in the gun safe is needed for probate reasons and the envelope in the bank is written in such a way that other people involved in probate will not understand what the info is.

gratifying to see so many folks who have been married for so long, especially in this day and age of 'disposable marraiges'. Honesty may be at the foundation of that. We've been together 31 yrs and going strong. I'm envious of those whose spouse shares their love of the shooting sports. As much as I've tried, my wife refuses to go to the range with me. Not anti, just afraid of guns. (I'm hijacking my own thread)

I've been married 35 years. Many, many years ago I started to tell my wife about one of my firearms. I told her how cool it was and a little history about it. She said something along the line of, "I know you really like your guns, but I really don't want to hear about them . . . I'm just not interested."

I have honored her request ever since. I don't share anything about my guns, and I do mean anything.

My honey pie knows about all my firearms. I know about all her hobby stuff too. Neither of us bother each other about how much we spend, as long as we're not running up mutual credit cards or anything silly like that.

'Mama Bear' is slowly coming around to my S&W addiction. She has been told, "this is my last gun" about 10 times. She is starting to understand about guns and their necessity (especially in today's political climate). She just got her 3914 to supplement her Les Baer TR Special (all of the guns are hers anyway).

Bottom Line: She has FULL control of the $$$ and where it goes. She knows I spend on 'gun stuff' as she calls it. I tell her it's better that I come home smelling like Hoppes No. 9 than Chanel No. 5...

I just bought an absolutely gorgeous K 98 Mauser and told her everything....not a question, heck she was even interested when I showed it to her.

She just got back from Reno though and I have yet to see the credit card bill.

The way I always heard that one was: "If Mamma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."

Mine has encouraged me to buy guns, motorcycles, and even goaded me into a fairly expensive bicycle: "Go ahead, honey, you deserve it." For her last birthday, she asked me for a nice pocket knife. She did complain that the last Anza I bought her was a bit on the dinky side, and asked me how many more of those I thought I needed. (Yeah, I like Anzas, but I have only bought three, so far, including the cute little one I got her.)

Well, I'm oldschool I guess, but I think there should be zero secrets between man and wife. We have no secret money and make no secret purchases. In fact, I get "permission" before I buy anything that costs more than $100. She gives me the same respect.

and...

I'm not saying that's the right way...but it sure ain't the wrong way

happily married for 45 years…we have no secrets and don’t have to ask permission.

she buys what she wants and I do the same. Just like I did this week when I brought home a mint S&W model 36-1, round butt, 3 "
showed it to my wife, it fit well in her hand. Then I cleaned and waxed the "J" and put it in the safe.

OK, my wife never did seem to care very much. She earns a good living and we have separate checking. She has her bills, I have mine.

But she started showing some interest about 10 or 12 years ago. We were at Friday setup at a big show down in Lexington. A dealer who I know pretty well came over and wanted to buy my 3 factory engraved Colts. We dickered over the price, but even his initial offer was pretty handsome. So to my dismay he had to write me a check. I do hate that part. So I drove home and told her I needed a favor from her the next day. I need her to deposit the check. She said fine, but then she saw the total.

So she asked me if I sold my whole collection to the guy. I said no, just 3 guns.

So she started paying more attention. Then when I sold off about 20 of the Registered guns, she really got a shock. But she started becoming more supportive of my hobby. When our friend Brenda's hubby died and she finally decided to sell off her guns, it kind of hit her that some day she'd be in the same boat. So she took careful note of what the local dealer offered her, and then the much larger number that David Carroll eventually managed to deliver.

She's still not very interested in details, except on occasion.

So last month we were at a big flea market. She was the one who noticed the knurled screwdriver in the case, and was pretty proud the guy sold it to me for $6. So a little farther along I stopped to spend some time looking at the Randall knives the guy had.

She wanted to keep moving, but I'm like a stubborn old mule and couldn't be budged. Finally she looked at the knives and saw the outrageous prices. So I told her to look closely, because some day soon I was planning on dying and she'd have to sell mine. Her comment was "OK, the guns go to David, who gets the knives". I told her I'd introduce her to him.

She has no interest in every transaction, but she realizes I'll soon be dead and she'll need money. I've explained the folly of allowing our sons to take what they want. Its different than allowing the one or two to remember stingy old dad by. They can have what's left after she dies.

Even the best kept records don't give much of an approximation of value today. Say an RM that I paid $1400 for 15 years ago is still worth the same? In your dreams.

We've never fought over money. We both have been lucky with good jobs all these years.
She has a basement full of her hobbies. I have no interest in knowing where she got the stuff (except the parts that I bought because she was too cheap.) But then the difference between women's hobbies and men's is that our stuff can be resold and goes up in value. Fabrics maybe can be cut into cleaning patches or polishing cloths.

I dislike the idea of keeping secrets from someone special, so the "Lovely and Charming" quickly finds out about any firearm purchase I make. We are both adults and neither of us has to ask the other for permission to make a purchase.

My wife and I will celebrate 34 years together next month. I do tell her most of what I spend...if its minor, I don't worry about it, nor does she. When I was working and making very good money, I didn't worry too much about spending money because I didn't have the time. Now that I am retired, and have the time, I don't have the money!

I still pretty much spend minor amounts without consulting her...but for a "major" amount, say $1,000 or more, I do discuss it with her, since our finances are more limited. She does the same with me, except that her hobbies and interests seem far less expensive than mine!

I always tell her either before or after buying somthing. I set aside a hunderd dollar bill on pay day. This is my gun/emergency money. She has access, and can use it.
In 31 years of marriage we thave been dirt poor at times, and money fat at times.
The old saying "I wish I had the money then, that I have now" rings a bell.
She has it "good" compared to most of her freinds, and knows it.
She often says"Why don't you buy something for yourself, you deserve it". The other week she said why don't we get a Harley. LOL!!!

My honey is cool with my gun purchases so i keep no secrets
as far as buying a new to me gun. She's learning to shoot now
as well and really seemed to enjoy shooting these 2 last weekend.
I started her out with .22 LR of course.

I always tell, but that's been my method for everything with my wife for the last 37 years.

Man you have a great woman there. Mine wants the same ammount that I spend. It's fair but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

No secrets in the last 46 years,41 of which we have been married. I love her more today than ever. She saved me from myself. Only time she gets upset over my guns is if I SELL one!

Years back when I was doing mechanical (read AC & plumbing) contracting-before the final walk through inspection, we always left two glaring mistakes for them to find-it distracted them from looking real close for the little things that nickled and dimed us to death.
This works real well in a marriage too.

Default How Ironic

Just today, my wife stated she has not been in the gun safe and does not know what is in the safe. She knows how to enter the safe and such. I do tell here everything about my purchases (yes, ask permission for a new toy).

Just think, I could have a 1903 next to my Garand and she would even know it.

But my conscience would get the best of me.

Thank you, she is a great woman! What I like best about her is after thirty years of marrage she has not shot me in my sleep yet.

I always discuss the guns and gear I want to buy with my wife Before I buy it. If we have the spare money she has no problem with me buying guns and ammo. Been married 44 years and it's all built on trust and communications, not lying.

Been married 31 yrs and dated her for at least 5yrs. We tell each other everything. When I tell her about a new gun purchase she smiles and pretends to be interested, just like I do when she shows me a quilt she has just finished.

She doesn't shoot but will go to the range with a lawn chair and read a book with her ear protection on.

But it's a different story when I get the boat out, she loves to fish.

We will be married 69 years in August and I usually tell my wife before I buy a gun. The last one didn't happen that way. I had just logged on to Gunbroker about the time a gun I wanted was listed. It had a very good Buy Now price and would not have lasted long. I didn't have time for a conference so I told her after I bought it. No problem.

I do not give my wife details unless she wants them. My purchases are few and nothing compared to other family expenses.

40 yrs of wedded bliss, and she has no problems with my appetite for fast cars (240-Z, Porsche 944 turbo, Mercedes SL550) and 1st class guns. Why just the other week I told her I had plunked down eleven hundred bucks on one of the most beautiful pieces of hardware I had ever seen as I showed her my NIB S&W 1911 Sc 'E' series .45 Round Butt. And She said, "Wow! she's a real beauty all right, let's head for the range ASAP." Or maybe she said, "You did WHAT?!" I really wasn't listening...

when we first were married and money was tight, we had a rule that any expense over $100 needed to be talked about. that rule still stands as it has worked good for us

Luscious and I will celebrate our 33rd in July and we have always discussed where the money goes.
There's no way I would leave out details or lie about my hobbies.

If a husband does a thing, that gives the wife free rein to do the same, right?
Lying about spending money? Conveniently forgetting about a big dollar purchase? Hiding stuff from view?

I don't think I'd care for that much...

I have always had the philosophy that "Women are born smarter than men ever get" -- just does not make any sense to not tell the woman in your life about major purchases (which includes most guns) -- their intuition will ferret it out anyway.

I met my wife just after she finished college at Ole Miss (she is 17 years my junior) -- she has always carried a gun (she is the oldest of 3 girls, her Dad taught her to hunt and shoot, he is a national/world champion SASS shooter). She loves to target shoot and she understands the value of the guns "we" have collected -- life is good.
