Default My Wife and I Go Bear Hunting.

Living in Eastern Virginia, I have never seen a bear. Well in zoo's but they don't count. Neither has my wife, being a Milwaukee/Chicago girl. They have been reported in our area, and a couple of been killed around here, we have never seen one.

Until last week.

We took a drive up on the Skyline Drive for the day. We're always joking about never seeing a bear. "Nope...still no bears."

Then, we stopped to make a head call at a picnic area along the drive. After we finished up and got back in the car, and drove about 25 yards, I looked over in a patch of brush and there he was. A BEAR!! Wooo-hooo. I told my wife..."There's one." She looking the other way, and turns with this (blank) you look on her face. Then she sees it. OH WOW!! A bear!!

Well the bear gets bored with the gawking tourists, so he (I suppose, I didn't check) gets up and mosey's into the bushes. Knowing the bushes just go into the parking lot/picnic area we had just left, I looped back around hoping to get a better look.

My plan worked. The bear was in the open, licking the grease out of a charcoal grill in the picnic area (Hey...I never said we were seeing a silvertip in the wilds of Montana you know). I pull up hoping to get a picture with my cell phone camera to prove that I had "seen the bear" so to speak, but he has his head stuck in the grill.

So, my wife, you know, the handicapped woman, who walks with a cane, and couldn't move fast if she fell off a cliff, says, and I kid you not..."I'm going to throw him a dog biscuit." (My wife carries a pocket full of dog biscuits with her everywhere. Drop her on the moon, and she'll find a dog.).. I say ARE YOU CRAZY? That's not a puppy. He might look fat, dumb, and happy, but he is still a wild animal. KEEP YOUR XXX in the car." She looks at me like I'm the chaparon at the prom, who broke up all the fun. "OK...be that way!"

He finally looked up, so here is "our bear."

Not quite "Call of the Wild" material, but it IS a bear. )D

Glad you told your wife NOT to feed the bear, it does not help them at all to associate food with people.
You will probably see more of them now that you have finally found "your first bear." Look for them where berries grow near thick vegetation while exploring the beautiful Skyline Drive, good luck and don't forget to keep one eye on the road while driving.

Hey! You've seen more bears in the wild than I have. Although they talk about them all the time at my sisters place. Maybe this year.

I've seen Sasquatch and el Chupacabra, but not a bear...

It's fun when you spot something after many years of hoping to see it. And yes, good thing you kept the Mrs. from feeding it.

When we go to Maine, we always look for wildlife. Have never seen a bear, but we have seen plenty of moose, deer, coyotes. We used to go whale watching too, and saw a lot of them. They are just awesome to watch.

One year we went to Baxter State Park in upper Maine and hiked back to a small lake, where we saw a female moose and her two calves standing in the water, eating. We stood there for about a half hour just watching them. What an experience.

We see an occasional bear wander by the house. This isn't unusual here in the PNW except we live in the middle of a town of 5500 population.

(and I apologize in advance for the following....)

I hope you had a Daisy Red Ryder at hand, in case things had taken a turn for the worse...

Glad you finally got to see your bear. You did your wife and the bear a favor. Always best to leave wild animals alone. Thanks for the picture, even if it was one of those, uh... well, you know about that kind of picture...

Good sighting! Uh, is the bear's face faded out to protect his identity?

Tell your Mrs. that a wild bear is just that. A wild animal. And this is not a setting for a Disney movie.

We are in the Wilds of Washington, and see bears occasionally. I have never been tempted to pet one, nor feed it anything (though one of my stepsons ex wives...NEVERMIND I DID NOT SAY THAT!!!).
