A call from my son----------------------
I just received a phone call from my son with good news. He said " I made Chief today". After many years in the United States Navy he made it. He was excited to say the least. My wife and I are very proud of him. He has been deployed 8 times to the mid east. We are very happy for him. I hope ya'll don't mind but I had to tell someone.

Great news -- a difficult rank to achieve and a rank to be very proud of.
the "Goat Locker" will be his new home (mess/lounge area for CPO's on ships).

My son's an MP, staff sergeant, we're hoping he'll make Top later on this year. Everything's done waiting for a slot. Fingers crossed.

Why would we mind? Congratulations!!
If we can't brag on our young'uns here amongst like-minded friends, where can we brag?
Again, congratulations to you and your son!

Congratulations to your son. Making the call to my Dad after I found out I made Chief was one of the proudest moments of my life. Dad passed away from a heart attack shortly after attending my pinning - I thank God every day he lived long enough to see it.
Tell your "Selectee" son I expect him to establish an account on this forum so that he may request electronic charge book entries from all of the "Honorable" Chiefs here.
Also I would like him to tell me the only major league baseball player to hold the rank of Chief.

Well, his unit is deploying to Gitmo for a year this January, hope it happens before he's gone. I'd wanted him to go Navy like me, because (I believe) the Navy does a better job of preparing men for the future if they get out after a few years, but it was his decision, and I honored that. The education I got in the Navy got me hired into a major utility company less than two weeks after my discharge, and I worked for them until I retired. I wish more people understood what you can get from the Military if you want to, rather than just screw off and fart around.

Thanks for all the kind words. I will pass them to the new Chief. He said he already started the "initiation punishment".

Congrats to the newest member of the goat locker. That is a great accomplishment. A lot of chief slots are getting harder to come by.

Congrats. With all branches of the military facing downsizing these days making E-7 has become much more difficult than it used to be. I know that the Navy and Marine Corp are being forced to deny re-enlistment to some who thought they were going to do 20yrs and get a pension.
