Onion Field killer dies in prison ...
Just read on FOXNews.com that Onion Field killer Gregory Powell died in a California prison. Hopefully now the families of Officers Ian Campbell and Karl Hettinger will have the peace they deserve.

Good riddance to him, so much for the death penalty.

Thanks for posting this. I read the book and watched the movie on a rough VHS tape quite a long time ago. I will never forget the cowardly killing of Campbell or the terrible aftermath that Hettinger endured. They both gave me a sick feeling in my stomach.

There were only three films that I saw as a kid that were disturbing enough to remain with me for years ... Helter Skelter, Jaws, and The Onion Field.
BTW: The article had some interesting comments from the book's author, Joseph Wambaugh.

Justice was not served by him living out his natural life in prison. He got away with murder, plain and simple. He got away with pure unmitigated murder.

He went out with cancer, I'm thinking that was no picnic. They should have hung him though.

Well, I think he's gone before a higher court and the judgement will be a bit more severe.

While I hate speaking unkindly of the dead, this is one guy whose demise is a long time coming... and should have happened much sooner had it not been for Kalifornica's socialistic legal system.

Now if only Charlie would pass on... He's probably one of the few human beings that I wish PD had taken out behind a building and shot! That man is the poster child for evil!!

He should have had a date with a tall tree and a short rope 2 days after his trial was over.

It's tragic that he died ... without being adequately punished that is.
I hope he enjoys his first night in hell....

Normally, I wouldn't say this of anyone but in Powell's case I will make an exception. The article said that he first mentioned cancer at a 2010 parole hearing. So the scumbag knew for at least a year and a half that he was dying. I hope it was painful for a long, long time!

Pardon me showing my more primal side, but some types of killin' would be just about right. The old testament has some pretty good suggestions.......

Too bad that California pulled the pin on the death penalty and this *** wasn't sent to H_ _ _ much sooner. Once it was reinstated, it didn't apply to him or his partner in crime.
His own daughter attended his last parole hearing and said "It would be an insult to law enforcement officers if he got out of prison". I shed no tears for him, and pray that the family of both officers have peace and closure in their lives.

This is the kind of animal that really needed to meet his
demise in "old Sparky". With a dry sponge on his head.
Peace be with the families of the fallen Officers.

And In Cold Blood ---
At least Smith & Hickock got what they deserved while a lot of murdering scum actually get off even though convicted.
Spending your life in prison might not be a lot of fun, but neither is spending your life working in a coal mine (among many places). In fact the former is a much easier life than the later.........
The victim is DEAD while the perpetrator is inconvenienced - And this is fair?
Well, at least some lawyer somewhere can keep collecting a check from US

When the killings happened, it was big news. Now, it pales in comparison to what happens here on a regular basis, and the system still doesn't take appropriate action. Nothing will change until we stop trying to be nice to the criminals - they're trash and should be treated that way.

The scenes from the movie up to and including the shooting were required viewing when I went to the academy. Lesson to learn, never give up your gun.

That case inspired a lot of changes in academy training, and sold a lot of backup guns.
Prayers that the families of the two officers find peace and closure after all these years.

I pray the families of the Officers can find peace now that these animals are off this earth. I hope these killers meet their maker and are judged accordingly and this time there is no appeal and no reprieve.
