Charter Bulldog .44 at Cabelas
Wandered into Cabela's today and found this Charter BULLDOG PUG. From what I can find on the web it's a 1st production model made until '91. What attracted me was the frame is polished blue. I never saw one with this finish. They knocked $30 off so I got it for $200. The frame is steel, but the trigger guard and grip frame is alum.. The barrel is sleeved in alum also (yech!). Looks pretty good, as in unfired. I put my fingerprint on the cyl so you'd know it was me. Weighs 19 oz. unloaded so ouch! I guess.

I reload 200gr LRN at around 800fps and it still bites. I have a newer Pug stainless.

I bought some 240gr. "cowperson" loads, supposed to be 750fps.. We shall see how it goes. That skinny "crane" looks like a weak point. If I can handle this gun I'll buy some more .44 spec.. I remember it was tough to get a couple years ago. Cabelas guy thinks ammo deal from 2008 will repeat itself. Cabela guys know all, see all.

I shot one of the charter arms bulldogs once with some of Elmer's memorial loads and it is absolutely the worst kicking revolver I had ever shot

Yeah they're wood, but although the finish is perfect on them, it's kinda what you'd expect. Better than "Coltwood" though.

I had one of the early 3" Bulldogs issued to me by my PD for use as a back-up gun. I shot it with some "Skeeter" loads-245 grain Keith SWCs over 7.5 grains of Unique. Even using Pachmyar grips, I deemed it "The gun that kills at both ends".
It did bite a bit.

Congratulations on a nice find. Mine is an old 3"; and indeed bit at both ends with my special handloads -- v-e-r-y stout loads of Unique under 255gr GC.
Yours should be no problem with ordinary factory loads.
Regards,
Dyson

It can't bite any worse than the Mountain Lite I had. 19 oz of .44 Special with an open backstrap made it nearly unshootable ... five factory rounds and my arm was hanging numbly by my side, and I couldn't close my hand. I put the 500 rubber grip on it and could shoot 25-30 rounds without much problem. After that, I was done for the day.

If you hate it, which I'm sure you will, I'll give you your money back on it.

I have a new production Bulldog 44. No complaints at all. The kick is manageable. It's so compact & light & acurrate. Paid $350 for mine.

I haven't fired a new Charter from the last 8 months of production, but they seem excellent. Excellent deal too.

I had one years ago. Good gun but had to load it down. A few shots were all you wanted to do that day.
