Temporary Sanity Cost Me My Birth-Year Model 70
Even though I have been on this august Forum for many a moon, I was still capable of a rational thought at the most inopportune moment.
Catching me quite unprepared, my surfing led to this 1956 (birth-year) .243 Winchester Model 70:
Straying from the narrow path taught by the masters, I let my mind engage in lucid thought and reasoned that it did not make sense to purchase this weapon because I already had a 1955 .243 Winchester Model 70 in much better condition:
and I had just purchased a 1957 .243 Winchester Model 88 on GunBroker the day before:
and, I already had 3 Model 70's (my .243 is the one in the middle):
How foolish to let reason get the better of me.
I hang my head in shame for letting the Forum down.

Never too old to learn something new.
Are you telling me that there are gun owners actually playing with a full deck when it comes to purchasing new toys?

For an individual who collects such nice rifles I think it would be a priority to stain those prop rods as the really clash with the Walnut.

I just spent the last couple of days refinishing a stock for a Win M 70. My buddy at the LGS bought a old one and some moron had painted, yes painted the stock a dark brown!
Whatever this Bubba did he used a very good paint or 10 coats as it took 4 coats of stripper to remove it! It was a major pain to remove.
I finally got it cleaned off, light sanding and there is the beautiful Walnut. It's on it's 3rd coat of oil finish now.
Why would someone do that? It's not dinged or damaged in any way.

One thing for sure, Bubba has improved your stock refinishing skills, where would you be without him

I use a flash on a cheap old camera even in the day and the green algae really pops out.
Here, using photobucket I was able to adjust the hue and the saturation to get rid of the most of the green, It also makes the guns look different:

After:

Sad to say I too have allowed the dreaded condition "rational thinking" to get in the way of a firearms purchase.
The best defense against this horrible situation is to NOT think and just take ACTION!
That is what we are. Men and women of action. We don't need logical thought to get in the way of us taking action and buying firearms
So there.

It is far better to regret the purchase you made, rather than the purchase you did not make.

No regrets.
Happy with what I have.
But if the birth year gun had presented itself first I would have preferred it, even at the lower condition.

The only "rationale" i use when i see a gun i want is,
Will i still be allowed to sleep in the house afterwards
or not when the wife finds out what i spent of "our" money.
But hey, my truck has a big comfy back seat right??

They were making something.
E.G., 1894 was 118 years ago.
