Talking Lets talk Cat Litter

Seriously, for you cat lovers.

A very close relative has two cats and lives in a small condo.
They have one of those space age cat litter machines that looks like a time portal or space capsule to another dimension.

They use cheap generic cat litter.

I am not a cat person, never was, never will be. My JRT hates cats They are OK if they are someone elses and out in the barn on a big farm.

I want to buy some good clumping litter that eliminates or controls odor. Yes,the time portal gets cleaned.

Is there such a thing or is it all the same with lots of advertising.??

This is what we use and it really keeps the smell down much better than the clay stuff.

Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Clumping Litter, 18-Pounds: Amazon.com: Pet Supplies

I have to admit that I keep thinking of trying one of these or something similar:

I use Swheat Scoop its made out of processed wheat. Clumps well and seems to control odor pretty well. No chemicals either so I figure it's better for cats if they ingest any while cleaning themselves.

Fresh Step Multi Cat. It scoops and clumps

My old cat is very picky about litter. I liked the Arm & Hammer litter. he did not.

yes, cats get picky about it. If they don't like the way it feels on their paws, they will not go in that box.

If you find a litter that the cat likes and it clumps OK, but is not so great on smell control, you can always mix in baking soda without having to buy the Arm & Hammer brand cat litter.

Recipe for Kitty Litter Cake

Ingredients
1 spice or German chocolate cake mix
1 white cake mix
2 large packages vanilla instant pudding mix, prepared
1 large package vanilla sandwich cookies
green food coloring
12 small Tootsie Roll candies
You'll also need:
1 new kitty litter pan
1 new kitty litter pan liner
1 new pooper scooper
Directions
Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any size pans).
Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.
Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix until completely colored.
When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. Important: mix in just enough of the pudding to moisten it. You don't want it too soggy. Combine gently.
Line a new, clean kitty litter box. Put the cake/pudding/cookie mixture into the litter box.
Put 3 unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curving slightly. Repeat with 3 more Tootsie rolls bury them in the mixture. Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly on top of everything -- this is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.
Heat 3 Tootsie Rolls in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake; sprinkle with cookie crumbs. Spread remaining Tootsie Rolls over the top. For the coup de gras take one Tootsie Roll and heat until pliable, hang it over the side of the kitty litter box, sprinkling it lightly with cookie crumbs.

I looked at Costco and ours does not carry 'Clumping"

I like the baking soda idea, I can buy that in 50 lb bags

Two brands they may try.

Cat's Pride (either clay or clumping)
CAT'S PRIDE

World's Best, made from corn.
World's Best Cat Litter™ - Natural Cat Litter

Cost a few bucks though.

My better half is a member of the Melrose Humane Society, they save, neuter and place cats up for adoption here on the east coast.

Tried one of those "self-cleaning" boxes once. The cat was just thinking of going back in when the automatic feature triggered. Scared the poop out of her and she wouldn't have anything to do with it later....

Currently using Tidy-Cat Scoopable Instant or Multi-Cat backed up with A&H Cat Box deodorizer. THey like it and I can live with it, so...........

...I like our cat...but I can't stand the dust that comes from most cat litter...

...my wife is using a brand called Ever Clean...also says premium, extra strength, unscented on the box...

...It doesn't bother me at all...and it clumps and seems to work well in the automatic litter box...

I also use worlds best cat litter. It is made from corn and is compostablen if that matters to you. That photo above of the litter box reminds me of a practical joke I played at work. At work we had a machine shop next to the lunch area and we had an obnoxious machinist working there. Maybe sometime I will tell the story of the time the US Marshalls showed up at work one Friday and arrested him for rafting on the Touloumne River without a permit. He had a tray of kitty litter he left in the hall way next to the lunch area that he used for spills. He refused to move it into his space so one day as I was leaving for work I noticed that my cat had left a juicy cat poo on the top of her litter. I got a plastic bag and carefully scooped it out and took it to work and placed it on top of the litter tray. The litter tray disappeared never to return. I bet they are still looking for the cat that left it behind. I also did some work underneath the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals building in San Francisco. It is sandy under there like a beach and I noticed some old cans of cat food there. I asked about that and was told a cat got under there and they had trouble getting it out and they were feeding it. It sure had a nice big litter box there to do its business in. A downside is that the alley next to the building is used for all sorts of disgusting business by the street people. The guards there told me they see all sorts of things happen there including prostitution, stabbings, urinating and defecating so the city of SF regularly runs a water truck thru the alley with a load of Lyesol solution to hose down the alley. In one portion of the crawlspace there is a white solution in the sand which is dried lysol from the alley and it is really disgusting to have to crawl thru it. We also have a fiberglass housing in the parking lot next door housing an earthquake recorder that has brass padlocks on the handles. I had seen human feces next to the housing and one hot sunny day I grabbed the lock to insert a key to open it and the lock was wet. Some street person had urinated on it. I do not go to SF any more since I am retired as that place is just too disgusting. Anyway, sorry for the thread drift.

Rule3, any good quality litter will work just fine, as long as any "deposits" are removed daily. It's also necessary to replace the litter and wash out the litter box at least once a week.

...San Francisco is such a beautiful place...it's a shame nobody there has enough morality or conscience to take the responsibility to clean it up.

I use the stuff at Walmart in the blue bag, and the Arm and Hammer litter box deodorizer. As long as the turds are cleaned out the odor is kept down. I will not spend the cash for the clumping litter, just to end up throwing it out any way.

The General, Fitzhugh Lee, is VERY particular about his litter. Mom and I have tried the fancy perfumed litters, and the fancy clumping litters. He will only use the walmart store brand.

I have made this more than once.

I've had kids get freaked out by it.
I've had the highest selling cake at cake auctions.
I've also made a big production at a house party by pretending to get drunk and fall in the litterbox and say "what the heck" and start munching.

Ha. it smells and feels wrong to them. they won't use it.

however, I may change my mind on that view if someone is actually stupid enough to put a cake where they would usually put the litter box.

I am so glad that I am not the only one who holds San Francisco in such high esteem. Market Street is also a public latrine.

I have no idea.

Ms. Katz, my cat goes to the outhouse for her business, aka the Great Out of Doors. Maybe the neighbors don't like it but Ms Katz does not travel too far looking for a place to...

My SO has 5 katz! and I'm allergic to them. Yet, I'm the one stuck with "the dirty work"! Anyway, I use Fresh Step Multi Cat Clumping litter. It's sold everywhere, but I get (qty 3) 42lb bags every 2 weeks at Sam's Club. Seriously the Fresh Step stuff does keep odor down and seems to "clump" well. The green chlorophyll granules in the litter does work well.

For economics, we only buy the $14/42lb bag from Sam's Club. That's the cheapest I've found and the only place I've found that sells the 42 pounders. Usually every week, I dump and wash out the litter boxes. I usually fill each litter box with 8 small coffee cans full and add a can full or so every day depending out the "outflow".

The 3 bags give me 2 complete litter changes (all boxes) and I keep the litter filled at a high fill level that makes the daily chore easier.

I wouldn't have been surprised to read about cat litter on a shooting forum, had the litter in question actually been comprised of cats, along with a brisk discussion of appropriate guns and loads for feral, stray, and unleashed pets, the use of suppressors in urban environments, or etc., and even possible practical uses of cat pelts or other merchantable parts, but, no --- I've been sorely disappointed to find that this entire thread has actually revolved around feline feces control and other sordid subjects. Maybe the rules ought to be relaxed to permit discussion of more high-toned discussions such as politics, religion, etc. ...
