Default Good shoes for long hours...

I work 3 days a week in a hardware store, 8 hours a day on concrete. I always go home with tired feet and knees, but these last few weeks have been bad. I can hardly put any weight on my heels for 2 hours after I get home. Just turned 65.
I believe it's primarily ****** shoes that's responsible. Has anyone gone here, and come up with a really good shoe that lets you go the day without pain?

I would look into some sort of heel pads, check your local drugstores, there are the Dr. Scholl's products, there may be others.

a good pair of nike airs. i used to work 3 days a week at 12 hour days on concrete. nike air soles helped a lot. not sure if you have an air compressor there, but a little blast into the shoe when those dogs are barking helps a lot.

I walk all day for work. If you can wear boots I swear by Danner boots. These are the ones I wear, through Cabelas...
Cabela's: Danner® 6" Patrol Duty Boots
They're pricey but ya gotta take care of your feet...

Redwing brand shoes. Like the kind for Postmen. Or even Crocs brand, like those worn in Hospitals by both men and women

get a good pair of work boots! I am a sales rep for a footwear manufacturer. I have been selling boots and shoes for many years, and its tough to beat a great pair of 6 inch work boots. Also I always recommend if you're going to be on your feet for hours on end you should keep 2 pair of shoes. Switch them on your lunch break or halfway through the day. And eat a Bannana every day. The potassium will work wonders for fatigue on your legs and back. Sounds goofy but its true. Try it for a week or 2.

+1 on Crocs - they look goofy but if your job requires standing and you don't have to worry about protecting your feet (i.e. steel toes) Crocs are super comfy.

Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina , loggers that is!

I'm pushing 300# and on my feet on concrete 9-10hrs a day and my feet fell great.

I have lined(sub-zreo insulated) for the winter and unlined for the summer.

I do believe the slightly elevated 'logger' heel helps.

They ain't cheap $125-150pr , but they're well worth it.

Walmart has a machine you put your feet in and it tells you what insole to buy. They are a hard plastic pad. I wore a version of them 20 years ago and paid about a $100s for them. Now the same thing is about $45. It takes some getting used to for a few hours each day but soon you cant get by without them.

I hope the pain in your heels is not Plantar faceitis (sp). I had that and that was probably the worst thing I have ever expierenced. I didn't go to a doctor for it for about 3 years and never have had any other thing wrong with me, so that is probably why it was the worst.
Anyway, a cortizone shot into the bottom of my foot made things much better.
Since then, I found that Wolvering boots fit me better than any other brand. I think if you find a good pair of boots that fit, most of your problems will go away. for me it is Wolverine.

I imagine you want a safety toe working in a hardware store, but if not a lot of people like merrell hiking shoes for work (i.e. Moab Ventilator). I don't work in mine but I've had them over a year and they are very comfortable.

Sounds like plantar fasciitis. Put your feet up at night, ice 'em and get some heel cups. Ibuprofen helps to reduce inflammation.
5.11 ATAC 6" uninsulated tactical boots are light, durable, supportive and rugged. I've worn them working 8 to 10 hours 5 to 6 days a week in a factory and they're the best work boot I've ever worn.

cougar14, you didn't mention if there is a style of footwear you have to wear on the job. That's going to influence what your options are. I get the Dr. Scholls all black shoe as they come in either a sport-type that looks okay with Dockers-style pants, and an oxford style more appropriate with dressier slacks. Also, they come in extra-wide sizes for my 11EEEE feet. If I can find an all-black New Balance cross-trainer they work too. Back when I officiated football games, if it was on artificial turf (and not raining) I'd wear them instead of cleats. MUCH more comfortable when on your feet and running for hours chasing 8-14 year olds.

My doctor also tells me my feet, knees and back wouldn't hurt so much if I weighed 225 instead of 285...

I'm going to look into this Plantar Fascilitis as it just came on me this week. Got a Dr appointment in a couple of weeks, will talk to her while she is checking my prostate. Whatever, if I can't make it better, I probably won't be able to work. At least, my dog still likes me.

If you are retailing on concrete floors I'd buy some high end running shoes. I like New Balance but don't buy the cheap ones get the kind distance runners wear. They will take a pounding and cushion your feet.

A friend has planter fasciitis and his doc prescribed New Balance specifically. He hates em as he'd spent most of his life wearing sockless topsiders.

The Mickey Mouse company I work for doesn't care at all what I wear, as long as their branded name tag is front and center. My wife who is also on her feet all day swears by Brooks, but I am thinking about trying a hard shoe this time, like Redwing, instead of a tennie. Actually, I think much of my problems stem from being stationary for several minutes at a time (operating the key machine on September 1 for 250 people who find it necessary to relocate when the rent is due). What's new, it's California.

New Balance are good comfortable shoes but they don't last very long. Last pair I bought fell apart in less than a year. My 5.11's have lasted a few years and the only failure was a broken shoe lace.

A lot of bartenders swear by Keens, although my son wasn't too impressed by the pair he bought. I bought a pair of Keens hiking boots on clearance, and they made my knee pain go away, for a while. A pair of Patagonia-branded shoes had the same effect.

Several grades of NB. The high end shoes are made in the USA but they also have China made shoes for mass merchants. This is a case of you get what you pay for.

If you can form coherent thoughts and sentences while your prostate is being checked you're a better man than I...

Interesting for me to see a comment about New Balance not lasting. I get them because they DO last. The $20 discount stuff lasts 6 months tops. I have New Balance shoes that are four years and counting. You just can't wear the same shoe every single day. You need to have multiple pairs and rotate them. I do admit that when they finally wear out, it's from the inside. At my weight, there's a lot of pressure on the insoles.

I bought them because people told me they last. They'd show me theirs that they'd been wearing for years. I got the high end expensive shoes and mine just didn't last very long. I was kinda bummed about it because they were comfortable.

Don't ever lock your knees when standing for extended periods of time. One of those early rules in boot camp to prevent newbies form passing out on the deck.

Yeah, I about keeled over during the ceremony at my brother's first wedding. Full-on Greek Orthodox with cantor and everything. Lasted forever. So did the reception.

I generally get New Balance; bought a $70 pair the other day, but I get so pissed off shopping for shoes that I almost decided the hell with it. I'm so sick of the made in China **** for $60, and right next to them is another pair of made in China **** for $100. I mean, really, what's the difference????

A good pair of western boots that fit perfectly, always worked for me. $300+ but they'll last a long time. When the sole wears out, resole them. You can put Work insoles in them, but it will change the fit.

I'm kidding of course. I've always done it on concrete or hard ceramic tile, but even customers think I'm insane for doing it. I even bartended in Tony Lamas.

Used to work rotating shifts 24/7 and walked on a variety of surfaces, concrete, gravel both large and small. Used to wear Herman Suvivors both insulated (winter) and uninsulated (summer) Still had foot problems but the pain was not as severe. Frank

I'm on my feet 12 hours a day and the best type of shoe I've worn is a good running shoe.

New Balance and Nike are the ones that fit my feet the best. I have Nike Air Monarch's on right now. I've bought them 6 or 7 times in the past. They only last me about 5 months before the sole starts warping, and curling up at the nose.

In the winter I have a pair of Danner boots that are about 8 years old that still feel as good as new, but I can't wear them in the Houston summer heat.

There are three things in life that you must never skimp on quality when you buy. If you insist on top quality in these three categories you will have a much better quality of life.

SHOES if your feet hurt nothing else can feel really good
BOOZE quality booze is better for you and increases your happy factor
GUNS good guns go bang and hit where aimed. that can come in handy

What's best is different for each of us. Find out what BEST is for you and pursue it relentlessly. You'll be happy if you do.

Good luck. I wish you "happy feet".

I work in a big box hardware store, on concrete 40hrs a week.
Check out FootSmart dot com, they have shoes for different
problems. I got Orthofeet bio fits, they look like runners. Best ones I've found so far.

Another vote for a good pair of leather work boots. Most are heavy but they do offer good support and comfort.

A couple years ago I had incredible back pain. Was taking Oxy just to get a few hours of sleep. Started seeing a chiro & he told me that walking the dogs (sometimes up to 5 miles a pop) in cheap sneakers was the culprit. Started wearing leather boots and after a few months of adjustments I was right as rain.

Gel insoles help a lot.

I like my Doc Martins a lot but wear some Pakistani Caterpillars evry day.

New Balance makes shoes for different kinds of feet. Their website describes different levels of pronation. If you have flat feet, you need different support than if you do not. I had a heel spur and their shoes helped me a lot. I did get treated for the heal spur(Plantar faceitis) and the doctor stuck a 3 inch needle in my foot to treat it.

I signed up for the New Balance sales emails and that has saved me a lot.

Default Insoles

I rotate 3 pairs of 5.11 tactical boots through out the week. Never wearing the same pair two days in a row.
You might also try changing socks frequently.
If you purchase compression (long wear) socks it also will make your feet feel great at the end of your shift.
Just my 2 cents.

Bought a pair of Wolverine work boots last year around Christmas time, best work shoe I've ever wore!
On the weekends I got a pair of Roper slip ons and theyre not bad either!
Bought at the local Rural King, spent about $130 for both pair.
And those Dr. Scholls inserts are lifesavers!! Dale

I was going to recommend Softwalk...but they only make women's shoes.

p w miner and Drew make very good men's orthopedic shoes.

If you'r eon your feet, find good orthopedics. Drugstore inserts can only do so much. They are OK for short periods of time or to put in a pair of shoes you just don't want to let go. But I've tried inserts and they don't do a thing for me. If you have plantar fasciitis or arthritis in your feet, get shoes made for those conditions if possible.

Sneakers hurt my feet -- any brand, walking, running, crosstrainers, basketball...they all hurt worse than any pump ever did. So...if sneakers work for you, try a good pair. Just know that depending on the source of your foot discomfort...may be a bad move.

Yes, they are expensive, but cheaper than foot surgeries and no painful recovery.

I have Morton's neuromas in my feet as well as bone spurs....one has been there likely about 20 years judging by the size of it. My doctor is picky about what I put on my feet. There are days when I have to crawl especially in the mornings and evenings when the pain and popping/sliding of inner foot parts is at its worst...the right or wrong shoe makes a lot of difference. The brand that works for me or others might not be best for you. See a podiatrist for advice pertaining to your foot and what you are doing.

Now I'll give my take on this if the good folks of the forum will allow me. I am a ex champion Powerlifter, my Deadlift and Squat both nearing the 600 pound mark before sadly breaking my back and ending my career lifting in competitions. Yes 600 pounds, that's not a misprint. One thing I learned all of those years of GRUELING punishment and training is the effect of a flat foot or flat bottom foot wear. You are absolutely thee most stable in your stance and the dispersion of pressure on and throughout the foot.

Granted there are many of us who will absolutely benefit from a arched type of support, but others will benefit from the flat foot bottom. For those folks, please take a look at the Otomix line of foot wear. They specialize in Martial arts and training type sneakers with the majority being flat bottomed foot wear.

I wore these type sneakers for decades and never any negative effects on my feet even with the better part of a quarter of a ton of weight on my back!! You can sleep in these sneakers and not even know you have them on, I don't lie!!!

I will tell you this though, do NOT run in them LOL, you will be sorry, ask me how I know, they are NOT for running. Again you can have these on and literally forget you have anything on your feet they are so comfortable you have to experience this to believe it.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I speak the truthe, your friend Frank

Now, because I love you all so much here, let me give you my professional take on a shoe for the other folks who need the little lift in the heel area for support. Because my 89 year old step father, { one of thee first Navy Seebeas ever! },needed the flat bottom Otomix sneakers, he gave me his brand new pair of GDEFY sneakers. This stands for GRAVITY DEFYER. These crazy sneakers literally have coil springs built into the heels, and let me tell you THEY WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With my past broken back injury's, yes plural, these sneakers have changed my life for the better. They are extremely well made and comfortable as well. They are NO gimmick I assure you, as the first time you put them on, you never forget how the ground underneath you feels like it is moving. Then you realize, it's the springs under your heels working, I kid you not!!! I swear to you all, the feeling is incredible!!

So there you have it from a semi-pro athlete, both flat foot sneakers and raised heel with shock absorber sneakers.

{ I have nothing to do financially with either of the above mentioned company's } my honest thought and views on the sneakers mentioned, Frank

I would suggest finding a store that specializes in nothing but work boots or shoes. It would be even better if they have a truck that goes to the manufacturing plants in the area. Most often, they have people who are knowledgeable of what type of shoe you need for the work you do

I'm in 100& agreement. Go to a police, security, postal etc uniform supplier. Have your feet measured. As we age our feet grow, usually wider. You may need a larger width than you have been using. Two brands I haven't seen mentioned, Rocky and Throughgood (sometimes named Wienbrenner) both brands are top sellers with police and postal, are USA made (if you consider Puerto Rico part of the USA for Rocky) and both brands have shoes similar to Red Wing for considerably less in cost.
