Next full moon...
The big spotted sow is next.
That winch on the far right leg is about 4 foot off the ground.

Hog hunting looks and sounds like tons of fun, but I'm glad we don't have that problem here yet.

Huge problem on the sugar cane farms around here they eat the sweet stalks then root up the roots of next years crop. They reproduce like flies. In my opinion after they hit about 20 lbs they aren't worth eating.

Dirt nap?
I would think a "partial" cremation would be more in order.

Are they fit to eat? I know that a farm raised male hog that has not been cut is not fit for man or beast to eat and I would think a wild hog would be the same way. I have always been told to not kill a sow that is in heat because it wouldn't be good but I have never tried that. Larry.

Heard all the same things. This IS farm stock gone feral.
After years of huntin in the piney woods and
Listening to the old timers..the meat is fine.
For the bores you cut his cajones straight away after the kill.
Properly dressed and cleaned they are good eatin but your correct
I find the smaller the best.

Have yall watched the episode of Gun Talk where they are hunting hogs with night vision (Texas)? 100 rds or so of .223 and they only get 2-3 hogs. One of the scenes they are going to all shoot on 3. One, two, blam, three. If you need a good chuckle watch this the next time they rerun it.

Just a note on the video I posted above...

They didn't use night vision scopes on the rifles in the video,
they used thermal scopes that see heat.. not light in total darkness!

Now, if I only had the extra money...
A subsonic rifle with silencer and thermal scope. Game caller, and my treestand... wouldn't this be great fun playing with all the coyotes in the neighborhood!!

Someone sent me this:

This Texas feral hog shooting chopper video (LOACH on the job) is fascinating. The pilot has a fixed rifle with optics rigged back to his helmet and eye-piece. He doesn't miss and his scout-chopper flying skills are down pat with the hogs behavior and pack or group running style. This came from Greg Cooper who has a huge ranch SE of Brownfield, Texas...south of Lubbock. I don't know where the chopper hog hunting op is but it is clearly West Texas. This is a long run video but the hogs get it! I don't see them dropping flags or stakes from the air to ground-mark their kills so as to go find them easily but I assume they "know" the country or wait for the turkey buzzards to tip them off.

1more, on that episode of Gun Talk they used both. If you are looking to play with a suppressor, you might want to look into the .300 Blackout. My boys have just completed an AR each in 300 Blackout and they shoot great. Uses std AR mags and with a little time you can make plenty of 300 brass out of .223. Cut it off at the shoulder, run it through the sizer, trim to length. I'm thinking about building up one myself.

Heck, they don't even have tusks! Back in the 70's I used to hunt hogs over at Tellico Plains. Those were big suckers that could do some hurt if they got you. Some of the guys I went with used single shots to keep it sporting, but not me - I used a Model 94 in case I missed.

Of course, that was back when these were managed hunts, and the number and level of destruction caused by the hogs was minimal compared to today. Now its mostly pest control. Sort of like going after barn rats with .22 CB caps.

As far as eating them, put a ham in a lardstand of water and boil it for 10-12 hours. Then pull it out of the water and wrap it in a big heavy wool blanket for 2-3 days. When you took it out of the blanket, it was still to hot to touch with bare hands. That meat was so tender it would just about fall off the bone.

The most problematic feral swine in NY seem to be in Albany County, but I'll say no more, because Politics is a banned topic here.

Hey, Buck...

The wild boar around Tellico wasn't your normal piggy gone wild!
I've seen black Russian boar at better than 400 pounds with tusk over 4" long.

"In 1908 the Whiting Manufacturing Company bought a large tract of land in the Snowbird Mountains in Graham County, North Carolina. Within this tract was a mountain known as Hooper's Bald. Mr. George Gordon Moore, an American advisor for the company, was allowed to establish a game reserve on company land on Hooper's Bald around 1909. In 1911, a 500 to 600-acre hog lot was constructed, with a split rail fence nine rails high. In April 1912, a young shipment of 14 European wild hogs, including 11 sows and 3 boars, arrived and was released in the lot. They each weighed approximately 60 to 75 pounds. They were purchased from an agent in Berlin, Germany, who claimed that they came from the Ural Mountains of Russia."

Here piggy!

Wish i we're a bit closer to Texas. I been on a few
hog hunts in Tennessee. I'd like to get where they
have become a problem for the farmers or ranchers.
Have some fun while weeding out a few. Then plan
a big ole BBQ.

That's another thing I like about Texas. Free pigs. We occassionally get a few around here but after deer season you don't see them anymore...except in a smoker or made into deer sausage.

They are all over the place in Florida, of course not as BIG as in Texas. Great place to hunt is on the gated communities golf courses. They really cause a lot of damage/expensive but of course the residents don't want them shot, big business in trapping them.

As someone who used to raise pigs, make sure you kill/eat a sow, wild boars are awful to eat, you have to cut the balls off before they get too old and the meat tastes awful. Trust me... you dont want to eat no gamey boar meat.

Is there some way of starting a war between the coyotes and the feral pigs? It would be great if they thinned each other out a bit.

You are not just whistling Dixie, friend!

There are places I have to be careful driving in the 'burbs--even in greener parts of town-- so as not to hit any (it would tear up my little car!). Come around corner...BLAM! 50-60 hogs all over the road.
