Default Committing an unspeakable atrocity today!

In a libs eye anyway. I am taking about a dozen firearms to my daughters high school to make a presentation on different firearms action types and their safe operation. It is part of the Oklahoma Hunters Safety course. Should be fun.

I was allowed to speak to two separate classes. It was very well received and I even had students from other classes get permission to attend. I even had an entire English Lit class brought in by their teacher. Only had a couple who did not seem interested but had very good class participation and discussion. The M1 Garand and Remington LTR seem to spark the most interest.

And for those who seem to be concerned about Oklahoma State Law and guns on school property here is the section of statute that covers it:

C. Firearms and weapons are allowed on school property and deemed not in violation of subsection A of this section as follows:

1. A gun or knife designed for hunting or fishing purposes kept in a privately owned vehicle and properly displayed or stored as required by law, or a handgun carried in a vehicle pursuant to a valid handgun license authorized by the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, provided such vehicle containing said gun or knife is driven onto school property only to transport a student to and from school and such vehicle does not remain unattended on school property;

2. A gun or knife used for the purposes of participating in the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation certified hunter training education course or any other hunting, fishing, safety or firearms training courses, or a recognized firearms sports event, team shooting program or competition, or living history reenactment, provided the course or event is approved by the principal or chief administrator of the school where the course or event is offered, and provided the weapon is properly displayed or stored as required by law pending participation in the course, event, program or competition; and

3. Weapons in the possession of any peace officer or other person authorized by law to possess a weapon in the performance of their duties and responsibilities.

A few years ago a local high school history teacher, knowing that I have a fair collection of WW2 weapons, asked me to put on a display for his class as they studied WW2 in Europe. School administrators responded with a very firm "NO", gun-free school zone and all.

Instead we set up the display at an outdoor range, attendance voluntary, parent or guardian required with each student. The young folks thoroughly enjoyed learning about the M1, M1 Carbine, 03/A3 Springfield, M1911A-1, Victory Model S&W, Johnson, various bayonets and accessories, and a M1 Thompson SMG I was able to use for the day. Parents also had a lot of fun. Couple of grandfathers even stuck around to help me field strip and clean the weapons after live fire demonstrations (which couldn't have been done in a classroom anyway).

Good learning experience, in my opinion. Just thinking about marching across Europe while lugging a Garand along makes one appreciate the history lesson.

While you're there, let them know that an empty holster is as useful as an empty swimming pool. Why Woody even wears one is beyone me if they won't give him a six gun!

this needs to be a mandatory class just as Auto I... even if you dont like guns you still need to know how to be around them safely and know they wont jump off the table and get you! people (anti-gun) teach their kids that so its no wonder that we are headed like we are...

When I went to grade school in 1949 our teacher was the oldest in the state. His father had served in the civil war and he brought in his dads civil war musket. We all stepped out behind the one room schoolhouse at borth wisconsin and he shot it for us! His name was emil strehlow. Of course he`s on the far right.

Y'know, ever time you post that picture, I have the same wonder. Disease, or they was bringin' in the taters?

All three Lehman kids being absent that day. Although I notice Beverly was there, which tends to make it look more like sickness than harvesting.

Best to be extremely careful about possible consequences, as schools are supposed to be "Gun Free Zones" - and that's Federal law. No matter where you are located, there is bound to be at least one anti-gun parent who will be highly incensed over your presentation and may well try to make a Federal case over it

Beverly was a cousin to bob and carol. Louis was another cousin from a third family. I aint even listed but am the kid in the front row next to the three girls mislabeled david F? I found this picture on the internet a few years ago while researching something else. I wonder how many are dead! "Wendie" is my sister.
The brundage boys always drove a car to school! The one room school was first through eighth grades. I notice another missing that isnt listed. He done time for murder. There is another two or so not on the picture or even listed as missing that day. I went to 2nd and third grades there.

Around here, a lot of the liberals are hunters, and gun enthusiasts too. I'd say "most" based on who I know, but I don't know everybody.

Ain't you glad you live in Oklamoma where "The wind (& the freedom) comes sweeping o'er the plains?" The guy at my LGS does the same thing on a hunter safety course.

LoL!

Know exactly what you are talking about!

Seriously though, I thought pretty much all states had made gun possession on school property illegal by now

I graduated high school in 1978. Carried a pocket knife all 12 years. My 11th & 12th grade Agriculture classes taught the NC Hunter Safety course and even finished up with skeet shooting at the rear of school property. The principal wouldn't let me bring my shotgun on the bus I drove. Mom had to bring mine in her car. Everyone else brought them in their cars and we all had to lock them up in the teachers room. Didn't realize how good we had it at the time!

I remember doing a speech about concealed carry and self-defense for my sophomore HS English class. As a demonstration prop I brought in an old cap gun modified to look like a Fitz Special. I'm sure if I a kid did that today he'd wind up behind bars.
