Default Russian Model on Boardwalk Empire

Did anyone else notice Richard Harrow pulling out a No. 3 Russian Model
on Boardwalk Empire's last episode? I know got the gun and ammo would
have been around in 1923,and I suspect someone on the production crew decided it looked cool, but do you think someone like Harrow would have
chosen the Russian Model?

Regards,

Tecolote

Yes, definitely noticed the gun but have to admit was not sure of the model.

I vaquely remember in what I believe was the first episode Mr. Harrow appeared in he was discussing his past with Jimmy Dermody (?sp) and gave the impression he was interested and knowledgeable about firearms in general so I can believe he would choose a somewhat unusual gun.

Was rather chilling when Knucky asked him how many men he had killed he matter-of-factly and without hesitation replied "63".

I don't get that show, but it seems an odd choice for the times.
"
On, "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World", Prof. Challenger wore a Colt SAA .45 in a series set from 1919-1923. But he was on a remote plateau in Brazil, and the legendary durability (in that time) for the gun and its power made it a sound choice. And it had remained popular, thanks in large measure to its pointability and power, coupled with its Old West image. I doubt that the S&W Russian, which had been out of production for some years and which had less power and was more complex mechanically, would have been so favored by many people.

Other characters carried various contemporary Webleys and Colt .45 autos, well in keeping with what'd be expected. Keep in mind that the characters were British.

Sometimes, TV selects unrealistic guns, just to make a person seem unique or to generate audience curiosity. The cut-down Winchester M-92 used by Steve McQueen on, "Wanted: Dead or Alive" was highly unlikely, too, but they wanted something to draw interest to the show and be a "signature" weapon unique to that character.

On, "The Lost World", Finn (Third Season character played by Lara Cox) kept her crossbow long after she could have acquired firearms after leaving New Amazonia and coming to live with her new friends in the Treehouse. But the producer wanted her to keep the crossbow as part of her image.

Maybe that's what's happening on your show.
