Default Frank Hamer photos

The Bonnie and Clyde gun auction thread was getting a bit off track, so I thought I'd start one that hopefully stays above board, and doesn't incite any harsh feelings. The link below has some excellent archival photos of Frank Hamer and the posse that caught up and killed Bonnie & Clyde. At the bottom of the page is a small revolver icon ... click on it to be taken to another page with dozens of additional links to photos and info associated with B&C.

Yet, there is still considerable unresolved controversy about which lawman used what gun during the ambush, or for that matter, what guns were used. The rifle pictured and stated to have been used by Frank Hamer in the attachment was most definitely not the one he used, as it is a Remington Model 81 (police conversion), which did not even exist in 1934. More likely, it was an engraved Remington Model 8, in normal configuration, chambered in .30 Remington. Some feel he used a shotgun. Oakley probably used a BAR. Hinton probably used another Model 8 in .25 Rem. Everyone else had shotguns. Or maybe not.

I have read somewhere that henderson jordan was bill jordans uncle. I used to own the fine book "I am frank hamer". Most those pictures were in it. It was a fine book.

Were the firearms ever returned to the petitioners?

I'm with feralmerril, I read my copy of "I'm Frank Hamer" every other year or so. Great read and a definitive account of the life of a great LEO. I have had several heros in my life and Frank Hamer is one of them.

I was 3 years old when this happened. Later on I can remember my folks & grandparents talking about Bonnie & Clyde. Depression days were hard times.

Dwalt, you are absolutely correct on Frank Hamer's Model 8. As I posted in another thread, Prentiss Oakley carried a "borrowed" Model 8 that was sold at auction several years ago out of a collection owned by a fellow member of the Remington Society. According to Ted Hinton's book , he carried a BAR that he had own loan from the Texas National Guard after the Dallas Sheriff's Dept. Thompson was found not to be able to penetrate the sides of the Fords that Clyde liked to steal and drive. No one really knows exactly what everyone else carried that fateful day but according to several other accounts, Ranger Gault most likely carried one of Hamer's Model 8's, Jordan carried a Win. lever of some sort, Hamer was reported to have carried either a Model 8 or autoloading shotgun {most likely a Rem.11} and I believe Deputy Alcorn also carried an autoloading shotgun as well as everyone carried sidearms. Again according to several accounts, the ambush came up quick and the rifles and shotguns carried by Ranger Hamer in his car were spread out among the other Lawmen as they arrived. The Model 8 that Prentiss Oakley carried was as we know, borrowed from a Dentist in the town where he lived. That particular rifle's provenance is well documented. All my very best, Joe.
