Default Antique Safes

Quite often people buy or are given old safes. They take them home and use them for whatever. But are they truly safe?

I was dispatched to a mans house today to repair his safe. It was a 40's or 50's vintage fire safe. Huge double door safe on casters. When I found the problem, I realized that I would have to take the steel panel of the back. I first removed a small access panel and looked inside. Yup, asbestos!

I put the panel back on and explained that I would not be repairing his safe. Thankfully he understood.

So........ If you have an old safe be aware of this. Asbestos is most commonly fibrous but not always so it's hard to tell. And since there were no regulations regarding asbestos until well into the 1970's, nobody knows for sure which safe manufacturers used asbestos.

Every time you open the door you could be exposing yourself. Especially if the asbestos has started to breakdown either from age or repeated moving of the safe or constant slamming of the door. Sometimes the fireproof material will fall out of the crack of the safe. Not good.

I would not have an old used safe for that reason. If you have one either get rid of it or seal all cracks and opening.

Having said all that, chances are your safe MAY be ok. But since the safe industry was unregulated for asbestos use, nobody knows for sure.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral, and works really well, just don't breath it for 20 years. As a matter of fact, there is one town in northwest Washington where digging in your own garden could result in violations of federal EPA rules! If you have cracks and suspect the safe contains asbestos, the area can be sealed, either rewelded or even taped. Areas can also be spray sealed. Also, lots of folks believe asbestos has been outlawed but they are incorrect. It is no longer used for thermal system insulation, but is present in window caulking, mastic, brakes, and wallboard compound. Not to mention roofing materials and driveway sealants. If it makes you nervous, the material can be disposed of safely in a land fill. It just needs to be properly bagged and labeled.

One time,
I bought this big old safe...That was locked and the used office supply owner didn't have the combination.

When I finally got 'er cracked open, found a ledger from a department store from Chicago in '33...But no dough.

Su Amigo,
Dave

And no, I won't tell how I got it open.

Mickey,

Ain't that the guy that ask that wrestler if'n wraslin' was fake?

I've saw a few safes that were peeled and a few that were punched...

I like the looks of the punched ones best.

Dave

The EPA has way too much power! And there's a road out in Kali that's been closed for decades now. Its a dirt road that runs right over an exposed outcropping of frayable asbesdos. Walking, riding or driving over it could give you a snoot full of the bad stuff.

Just last week they had an article about Smuggler mountain in Colorado (Aspen). You need a permit to dig in your own garden. Not just a regular permit, but a "special" permit.

You can't go through life worried about everything.

Asbestos can cause damage and lead to cancer. My grandfather died of emphysema caused or contributed to by asbestos exposure. That being said, there ain't no such animal as an acute asbestos exposure, unless of course you are struck in the head by a chunk of crysolite. That hurts. Restricting a person from using their property seems to be sort of a direct violation of the constitution. But since when has that stopped bureaucrats? It don't matter who hired 'em, they are a canker on society.

That's fine by me. Leave the old, unsafe, asbestos filled safes for those of us who ain't afraid or are too old to worry about asbestos killing us in 30 years...

Kanew has a point Chad. No idea of your age, but I have found that the older I get, the more my scars hurt! I have hearing loss too, from decades of working, shooting, and rock and roll. Simply put, this **** catches up with you!

I'm surprised nobody makes a safe like my Kingsberry anymore. It's like a welding shop bought hinges and the lock and used sheet and angle iron and made a safe. No fancy vault like door. I like it, it has some little tricks inside that make it secure enough for me. Pro usually just take the whole thing anyway.

laws against putting asbestos in products were put in place to protect workers, not consumers.
You asbestophobes are buying into the PC line without even giving it any thought.
A little asbestos in a safe isn't going to hurt anyone. Heck , it was in Grandma's hair dryer, and she died because of a stroke at a ripe old age with no signs of cancer.

Have the old safe from the Pharmacy after Dad passed.

It's full of Gold Boullion and what Silver boullion would fit- hammered in.

Also have ensconsed, the first Star Voyager intergalaxy interloper conundrum.

That and the stable asbestous. Now you're worried!
FN (Fabrique Nationale) right!
Got your 6 and won't back-down.
