Default Dicks Sporting Goods

Went in for the first time today. Walked straight back to the gun/hunting department and was totally ignored.

Two youngsters stood behind the counter and debated over who's break was next.

So I browsed the rest of the gun department and was completely unimpressed. I won't be going back.

I don't like writing negative reviews but the lack of good customer service these days is rampant. It needs to be addressed.

My understanding of the new Dick's store in our community is that with the exception of a few management positions the local stores use all part time employees.

I have found Dick's to be the highest place in town but they do have the best sellection of UnderArmour stuff around.

When I go to Lowes or Home Depot I need HELP! Not just with where things are but which things I need to do a job or how to repair something. The people there, if you can find someone, might, if you are lucky, know where to point when you ask. I try to go to mom and pops hardware stores but try finding one these days.

All that ever caught my interest in the one nearby was a great sale on Carhartt t-shirts.
Same opinion as above on the hunting/shooting department - give it a miss.

When they bought Galyan's and settled in I was so underwelmed, and nothing has changed except the prices keep going up! For a short time they had old stock at clearance prices, since then, SQUAT. Maybe if golf was something I cared about it would be different.

When I go to Dick's, and it's not real often, I usually don't even bother to wander over to the firearms section anymore. Usually we go for apparel.

Every so often I stop in at one if I am passing by and know they have a sale going on.
We had one open up in town this past week so I poked my head in the "gun" section and asked the kid behind the counter about muzzleloading stuff. He showed me the three inline muzzleloaders they had in stock. Asked about accessories. They don't have any in yet. Cest la vie.
I've never been impressed with their prices, other than sales. I've definitely picked up a number of good deals at their sales over the years. I'm even less impressed by their knowledge. At least of the things I'm interested in. If I want service I'll go the one of the LGS. If they can't help much then it's time to turn to various forums and googlings.

Tapatalk ate my spelling and grammar.

Went into the one in Westland, MI. today, and the shotgun ammo is no longer out in the open. I didn't even bother to ask about it. Then, I went back to the shoe section looking for a new pair of New Balance walking shoes. The clerk back there told me that no one made true walking shoes anymore, and that I needed a pair of trainers. Geez!!! They've even stopped selling shotgun shells with a flat price.

Went to a Dunham's, found the walking shoes I wanted, and they also had Remington Gun Clubs and Federal Top Guns on sale. The assistant manager even carried three flats to my car for me.

I've always thought that Under Armor was a bit overpriced.

Sadly, at least here in the TampaBay area where we have three aptly named Dick's, the prices on sale items are still higher than I can buy the same items at my local gun club.

And, on-line, with Cabela's and other stores having sales from time to time, I can get about anything I need cheaper.

Two of the Dick's have lots of apparel, but never in either the size I want or the color. The amazing thing is that, when I CAN find someone to help, they always have what I need in "the back."

Can't quite understand why, if they have the size or color in stock in the back room, they don't consider putting it out for sale.

The third Dick's is far better, on sizes and colors, but it's, of course, farther away and more inconvenient to shop at, so, generally, I pass.

And, while I am at it, they give you a $10 coupon for filling out an on-line survey with any purchase. BUT, the coupon excludes guns, ammo, all the brands of apparel I'd buy, etc.

YUCK!

Bob

I remember going to Dick's once and asking a kid there if he knew the if you could fire a .38 Special out of a .357 Magnum. His answer was "No! .38 is bigger than .357. I know they are scarce on help, but they should know a bit about what they are selling. When our local Walmart first opened, the guy running the sporting goods counter had a lot of knowledge. After he left it has been a steady string of dunces and dweebs like the rest of the big box stores.

Dick's is my favorite local sports related store. I agree about the help not being the best and waiting and looking for help sucks. No doubt, they don't always have knowledge of the sports section I am in.... but.. I don't have any other choice close by. The nearest Cabelas is in CT, about 35 minutes away, only been there once.

I've bought everything over the years from clothing to softball equip, bicycle stuff, canoes, hunting gear and guns and a lot more. I know I have walked out of the store out of frustration waiting for someone to help me, but then.... I really do like the store so I go back.. Nothing to gain by biting off my nose to spite my face. I have found in this day and age, lots of knowledgeable help just isn't out there, other than the small MOm and Pop store, which there really aren't any around me that offers all of what I am looking for. Storing ammo in a locked cabinet or behind the counter is a neccessity this day and age, can't complain about that...

We've done well with sales and the coupons I have received definitely were appreciated. Seems everytime I spend a few bucks there I receive a couple coupons and $10-50 bucks off another purchase. Guess I have learned to except my local Dicks as my go to sports store. I ask myself, do I want Dicks to go away.... heck no, we be crying the blues if that happened..

For the record, I also frequent my LGS and purchase lots of goodies there as well... they just don't carry canoes...

Occasionally will stop in one of our local Dick's. Expect NO help and you'll not come away disappointed.
My favorite 'Dick's story' was when they first opened their first store in the area. I was enthused about visiting it, as it was something new for our area.
Entered 'The Lodge' area (what they call the hunt/fish area) and saw about the funniest in-store display I'd ever seen:

An upper-half mannequin, wearing a blaze orange hat and bird vest, and a sign proclaiming "Pheasant season is almost here! Get ready!"
Part of the display was various blaze apparel, some brush pants, a few turkey decoys and an enormous stock of 12 ga. rifled slugs. All together, for 'pheasant season'.
And this is in NC. We don't HAVE pheasants. And I don't wanna be near anyone using slugs to try to hit them with.

We need a Cabellas or Bass Pro Shops here so bad.

I live near the Citrus Park Dicks and their prices are horrid. Every once in a while they have a sale and you can get some ammo at decent prices, but that's it. No handguns either.

Dicks is more of a general Sporting Goods Store, Golf, clothing, weights, tennis, exercise etc. They built one right next to a huge Bass Pro Shop. I do not care for either of them. Bass Pro has some good deals on foot wear and shirts. They have a lot of firearms and related gear but the prices are nuts. I do not know how Dicks stays in business.

I prefer North Face cargo pants, and wear them almost exclusively. The North Face prices their items and everyone is the same price, and I have never been able to find a "cheap" place for them. Dick's is the closest place that carries North Face, and they generally have a good supply. So I buy my pants there. Picked up a nice pair of Merrell hiking boots also. My girls got athletic stuff there when they were playing basketball.

I have been in the "shooting" stuff maybe twice. I get the impression they were not a big seller for them, I don't bother going over there now, just go in, buy my pants and leave.

My local gun shops get 100% of my gun and ammo business.

Besides, a few years ago, we were in Dick's making Christmas purchases for the girls. Out of boredom while my wife was checking out, I looked down on the counter and plainly read a printed list of names and addresses of all weapons purchasers for the day...!!!! Yes, I called the manager as soon as I got home. Wish I had just picked up the list and shredded it.

Dick's lodge doesn't usually have very knowledgeable associates, but their prices are usually better on identical items than Bass Pro. Bass Pro has some knowledgeable associates, but most of the younger staff aren't. Usually the staff behind the gun counter at Bass Pro are very busy and so it is hard to get waited on. I always say that Bass Pro usually has it, but you pay premium prices and don't get anything in return, especially customer service.

I've been in the same store once just to see what it was all about, Kanew. My impressions were the same as yours. No reason to go back. If I feel the need to go to a national chain, we have two Cabelas within driving distance.

I just had a similar thing happen to me in Wal Marts wireless store. I was looking over phones because I was considering changing carriers and plans. Ttwo people standing in the back pf the store talking and me the only customer in the store. I was totaly ignored. I left and said I would not go back, however I did finally wind up a week later going back and accomplished what I originally set out to do. This time there was only one employee in the store, a younger girl. I couldn't have gotten better service.I depends on the employee.

At one of my local haunts (LGS) i get ignored alot because there busy. Most guys there are like gathered around the pot belly stove bsing. But i ask to see a gun and it gets handed to me. After looking it over i pull out the green or plastic and there done talking. The buying begins.

My local auto parts store is worse. They were too busy talking amongst themselves to wait on me. When i asked for a belt for the mower drive on my farmall tractor they said nope we don't have it. They never even looked. There talking continued. I just moved here from 3 towns away. I went back to my old town and at the same store i had the belt the next day.. The young man behind the counter gets me everything i need. Since i don't have the time to travel all the time i mail order were i can now.

Maybe I am in the minority, but I prefer to walk into a gun store, browse the display cases without being talked to.

I know their job is the "what can I help you with" line, but most of the time if I was honest, they wouldnt have any idea what I am talking about. And in the case of one "mini chain" of LGS that seem to just employ < 25 year old people, look down or condescending at you when they dont know what you are asking.

I would prefer to just not be spoken to unless I have something I want to see, or until I feel like asking them a question. Because 9 times out of 10, I can just walk in, see nothing I am interested in and then walk out.

Dick's is just another Big Box store, you will get a Big Box store attitude, people working for not much more than minimum wage which makes that unemployment check might tempting. A friend managed the bicycle department of the local one for some years, got fed up with all the times he had to work nights and weekends because the bargain basement help called off. I went to that one recently to buy a pair of swim goggles because I knew they had what I wanted, otherwise I don't go there.

At the one near me, they seem to strive to live up to their name. Not good.

And in my experience, if it's in the ad, it's out of stock.

Nothing tops going into WalMart and asking the male genius behind the counter, "Do you have a 12 gauge fly rod? I'm going trout fishing tomorrow." The search took 10 minutes and came with a sincere apology that, "It was out of stock."

You are correct, there are no trout within 200 miles of Augusta, GA.

I made 1 trip to Dick's, there won't be a second.

Dick's Sporting Goods is ok for a pair of shoes or a golf club, but the only guns in the Dick's I have been to are all new guns only. Stainless and plastic stuff.
They don't even carry used guns.
And the workers......well, your correct on those too.

Several years back I was visiting my Mom in NJ. There was a HUGE slae going on at the local Dick's on 12/20 gauge Target shells, both WW and RP. Decent prices.

So I drove to the store with my Sale flyer in hand. TOTAL stock of 12/20 gauge shells that were on SALE....FOUR boxes!!

I asked the Clerk if someone beat me to them. "No...We usually only have a case of each...when they run out...we order more".

Waste of time.

My usual comment on Dicks, Cabellas, Gander Mtn, Scheels, etc; "You can find EVERYTHING You could possibly want...Except for a good deal".

Walked into Dick's about 2 years ago, new store 5 miles away.
Went to the firearm section, I was the only one there for at least 10 minutes, looked at the goodies and left.

Now the LGS is like being in heaven, a few more $$ but any thing I want to know is here.

We have a Bass Pro in Manteca and a Cabellas in Reno NV.

All the Dicks are in SF.

I notice that service is generally deplorable in any "Big Box" store of any kind. And product knowledge does not seem to exist within the staff, even if you can find someone to talk to. I refuse to go into Dicks or Bass Pro Shop. Nothing interests me and prices are ridiculous in most cases. I bought a rifle at Academy Sports about a year ago, and the guy behind the counter didn't know how the 4473 process worked and had to go get help. The whole process took about 45 minutes, even though I had a concealed handgun permit. I won't be buying there again in this lifetime. Back when Sportsman's Warehouse was in business, the service there seemed more competent, but they are gone now. Cabela's service (at least locally) is better than BPS or Dick's, but not enough to make me want to go there either. And their prices are just as bad. I now buy as much as possible over the internet.

So can we safely deduce from the majority of posts on this thread that except for the availability of a convenient Owner/operator firearms store we do our buying on line?
Good and bad in my estimation....Good because we reap the benefits and convenience of shopping at any time of the day from the comfort of our homes and the discounts that come with a online store. The bad that is intrinsic with not having personal attention, not having the ability to feel, see, smell, taste the product and the uneasiness it brings.

The place has the perfect name: "At Dicks, we don't have Dick and we don't know Dick."
