Had to be an administrator's car. I've never seen a patrol vehicle with arm rests or carpeting.....lol.....they would MAYBE last 24 hours. Some Crown Vice enjoy cushy lives, but most are run hard.....and I mean HARD. Contrary to popular belief, you don't always have time to take them in for scheduled maintenance on time. I was on a call for 2 and a half hours today. My Crown Vic sat idling the entire time. Knocked off twice and was jumped off twice. Took it in for a new battery and alternator. Last month it got a new ABS module.

I still love it and don't look forward to getting a new charger next year. Mine's has low miles....a 2006 with 96550.1 miles as of this moment.

welp this car was the captains car of greenwich,connecticut police department. i called the fleet department of greenwich,ct they told me the captain only used it to drive back & forth to work. no high speed pursuits or idling hours this car was kept up. i have all the service records recalls were taken care of. 16 inch steel wheel recall, and outer dash insulator. i only take it to the dealer no where else its dark blue pearl metalic in color exterior. interior charcoal velour seats lumbar seating the car is awesome i paid $5,600.00 for it. with 104,000 miles on it now it has 123,300 i bought it in 2010.

I bought a 1988 blue Crown Victoria, police car in 1993. It had the spotlight on it. It looked like a Ronald Regan Secret Service vehicle. I paid $850 for it. It had the pursuit suspension & transmission package etc. with a 302 V-8 in it. It got 23 mpg and was very reliable and fast. It had posi-traction which was handy when I used it for deer hunting in the snow. The whitetail buck fit nicely in the trunk. It was a great young family car and I sold it for what I paid for it 2-3 years later after only having to replace the brakes. When we moved into a gang-riddled neighborhood I had short hair and everyone thought I was an undercover cop ... I let them. We were the only house there that didn't get robbed. C.W.

In that cop car you'd be comf'y in the front or back seat.

Good for you.
But I've spent far too much of my life in a Ford CVPI to ever want to be in one again.

When they started passing out Chargers they let me keep my Crown Vic. I don't have much longer anyway. It's got 134,000 miles on it and I'd drive it to Alaska if I had to. We'll most likely retire at the same time.

U got a detective one or one from a small dpt. I work with police cars. We have about 600 from all over the US. From Texas east. Not too many came with carpeting and center arm rest

I bought my daughter a 2001 CVPI for her first car three years ago. It was the local SO's transport car and probably made the three hour trip from Farmington to Albuquerque a gazillion times. I paid $1200 for it and it has been trouble free - just gas, oil, and tires. It just rolled past 200,000 miles and as soon as it needs a major repair I'll probably push it off a cliff and buy another.

I think Ford made a mistake discontinuing the Crow Vic rather than giving it a serious update. I don't know of any agency that is going over to the new Interceptor. I realize the top of the line model is AWD, but how many agencies can justify purchasing the "top of the line" model at budget time? Most will end up with one of the two FWD models. We had the TAURUS in the 90s and it was a horrible mess.

I only know of one local agency that is purchasing the new Caprice. It is an awesome vehicle, but very pricey and so far they've had problems with parts availability.

We made the choice for the Charger. Amazingly, our agency let the deputies choose. We didn't even entertain the Ford. We all (about 200 deputies) were given the opportunity to check out both the Caprice and the Charger. Then we voted, and the Charger won by a large margin. They arrive in about 3 months.

That looks real nice and at 123k it's still got another 100k plus left. I used to work on a couple of limo fleets. I had one that had over 400k and still was dependable.

The only thing I don't like is the air ride suspension. Some Crowns were equipped with it. Just like the Lincolns. I noticed that the Northern cars were more often equipped with it than down here in Fl.

I wonder if yours has it. (being how it was the big shots car and seems to be nicer than your average squad car) They're nice when they work but can be expensive to repair.

BTW some of the detectives drove Mercuries here.

We've gotten about a dozen chargers over the last year. All were HEMIs. All i can say is they are ok after 100k. Not bad but not great. Better then we expected.

Nice car! I was a mechanic for the Pa State Police for thirtythree years "retired in 2008" and know all about the Crown Vic interceptor. A couple of common ailments, wont idle, replace the "idle air controll "cheap and easy". Any power window problems replace the drivers door master power window switch, "never had a window motor fail". Transmission and alternator at 60 to 70K "perhaps police use only?". If you lose your low beam headlights replace the lamp controll module under dash just right of steering shaft. Blower motor only runs on high, replace blower motor resistor, under hood behind the right cylinder head on firewall, "a real pain to get at". Engine missfire code set, replace the "over spark plug coil pack" on the offending cylinder. These Crown Vic's really hold up to "not my car" police use, enjoy yours!

OK, so I always wondered are the interceptors faster off the line, or just set up so they can maintain high speeds for longer periods of time? A buddy of mine has one and tells me they are a bit slower off the line vs. the stock crown vic as they are heavier due to trans. cooler, heavier suspension etc.

nope wasnt a detective car for sure the police captains car. my car is called the [STREET APPEARANCE PACKAGE] it has everything the regular police interceptor has. only difference is full wheelcovers instead of centercaps,carpet instead of the rubber floor,and velour seats instead of cloth or vinyl. oh no spotlight as well ford motor company gave me this info as well as greenwich police fleet dept.

mine is a p71 it says it on the vin and no air suspension its not a lx look at the cluster panel [CERTIFIED CALIBRATION] i think that pretty much sums it up

The only real performance difference in the police interceptor and regular crown vic is the extra cooling engine and trans, suspension package, the computer. The compute has different air, fuel, timing curves, and a higher speed limiter. This allows for quicker off the line and high speed pursuit. There is no difference in the engine or trans itself.


For Ford to save the crown vic it would have needed total ground up revamp to keep up with competitors. It has gotten old, out dated, and slow.


Here is fords new Interceptor line. IMO It's better in most ways than Ford competitors.

There is a difference in the trans!

-The rear differential is not the same as the LX. It has an extra tooth. So you cant swap from a regular crown vic

-The transmission is also slightly different. On a regular crown vic the transmission is a bit shorter and the shaft is a bit longer. About 2in

-Most have oil coolers that will tend to leak. These can be removed and thrown away without a problem

-All on board computers are different and cannot be replaced by one from an LX.

-Break pads are slightly larger on the police cars, prior to 2001

-2004 and up have different rim sizes and computers

thanx arik always serviced at the ford dealer i put on 4 new tires goodyear eagle gt instead of the rsa $710.00 oh $50.00 rebate too and they upgraded the calibration

i still say ford shouldnt have ditched the crown vic awesome car!

Those wheel covers are not exclusive to the street appearance package. They were standard on 2004 & 2005. Street appearance package adds chrome grill and trim parts and some other parts. Both of my 2005s and my 2004 had those wheel covers and the stripped interior with rubber mats and basic seating. 2005 was the only year for the black whip AM/FM radio antenna on the passenger side rear quarter panel. Aside from VIN it is the only way to tell 2004 from 2005. I believe the 2005 had a lighter driveshaft, but I could be wrong. 2005 had different shift points for the transmission. It has been my pratical experience that the 2005s will smoke most if not all other years. Was not uncommon to allow a deputy with a 2005 to take lead vehicle.in a pursuit because it had a slight edge. Just my experience........

My department has run LTD / Crown Vic for patrol for the 31 years I have been there, except for about 1984 (Caprice) and 1992 (Taurus), 1 year each. By and large, they are good, dependable, comfortable cars to work out of.

We have car-per-man / take home. I have had my 2008 since new, just hit 65,000. Only repair was a short in the music radio/CD player or speaker wiring; anything else needing fixing was a wear item like brakes and tires.

We have been getting our new cars in a slow trickle for about 2 months, Ford Interceptors. AWD, non-turbo V-6. For the exterior size they are, they sure have tight interiors. While the drivers seats are shaped to keep the driver in place, they also are a tight fit for anyone bigger or taller than average. They have lousy visibility to the rear and sides. Pretty quick compared to the Vic.

All in all, I hope I get to keep my Vic 2 more years until I pull the plug.

Give the engine a bath, spray it with "Greased Lightning" and hose it off. A little wiping, if really bad, before hosing will not break your arm.

I do my cars with that once a year.

I also change the brake fluid in the master cylinder at least once a year. My brakes always last way over 100k miles.

Anybody that opens the hood of one of my cars is always amazed!

When I was in high school ('71-'73) I had a 1968 Ford Custom Police Interceptor. It had belonged to the Village of New Boston (Ohio) and I won it in an auction in 1972, I think.

The first thing I did with it was pull the interior and hose it down. Too many drunks had been in the back seat over the years. Pee- Shew!!!!

Man, was it cavernous. It fit 6 passengers, 2 beer coolers and there was still room to dance!

Thats just a portion. I didnt walk in the back where there are Vics for parts, Vics waiting for repair, Ambulances, busses....There is somewhere between 600-1000 gov vehicles here, 90% police CVs.

Now days with the economy the departments dont leave much behind for us to play with. I used to find tazers, stop sticks, computers, cameras, and A LOT of ammo!!!! They'd leave loaded mags, boxes of 12G buck and slug, 223. We'd find full Mini14 mags, Beretta, Glock, Sig mags, loose 9mm and 45acp. Once one dpt filled the whole car with brass! There was like a 4 in high pile of brass on the entire floor from front to back. Once a dpt left a shotgun in the holder thing. Guess they couldnt find the key or maybe forgot about it. Today you'd be lucky to find chew'd gum!

I always liked the Crown Vic body style. I have a Mercury Marauder, Just a Crown Vic with a bad attitude.

I had a 95 Vic. A nice car, but hardly dependable. I donated it since I didn't feel right selling that clunker to some poor sucker.

I recently had a thread about my '97 Crown Vic. Paid $4000 for it with 67,000 miles. Missus P&R Fan was, and still is ticked. Says it's "an old people car". The thread ran for three pages, and about half the responses agreed with her. I don't care. I ain't old (47) and it's a nice car.
Now I just wish it had the Interceptor motor and performance suspension. Then I'd show her.

A interceptor motor isnt any different then a LX motor. The interceptor has upgrades to the whole car and slightly more HP. If you compare it to 6cyl Japanese family sedans the interceptor looses in the HP department. If youre looking for a fast as CV look at the Mercury Marauder.

yup arik your right shifting points etc... this car was babied even though i use synthetic blend 5w20 i still change the oil every 3,000 miles oh the engine bay was cleaned i dont go to car shows you know sometimes when im sitting in there i feel like sleeping in there its well worth the money & then some thank you all for your kind words my late mother would of loved this car she use to work at the waterbury,connecticut police department

the interceptor motor is just dual exhaust. You've got the cop motor, but not the cop suspension or brakes

The CV was older technology and needed some upgrades that would have been very expensive. That's a shame, as the current options (Caprice, Charger, and Taurus PI) have all shown some serious warts in various agencies. The Explorer is no improvement as far as I can tell; it's also built on the same frame as the Taurus. From what I have been able to learn, the Tahoe is the least crummy of the options. That's too bad, as I had high hopes for the Taurus.
