Tens of thousands rusting away
I have a buddy who has tons of money. I'm talking tons. He got on a gun buying spree a while ago and had me involved helping pick out stuff for his collection.
He's kind of a loose canon type so he's big on spending and not big on taking care of anything. I kept asking him if he had a plan in place to prevent rust as these guns were all being kept in safes that were outside (in garages and farm shop buildings). He said he had it all taken care of.
Last time i had a chance I opened one of the safes just to check on things...just about everything was covered in rust. I think the only gun that didn't have rust on it was a nickel plated Python (whew...close call).
There was an HK P7 that had a complete layer of rust on the entire exterior.
They had so much rust that i had to quit using the gun rag I had because it was totally saturated with rust...there were no clean spots I could use anymore.
It's a sad deal to watch tens of thousands of dollars just rusting away. I oiled them half to death and put them back...that's about all I can do.

I think I would have to tell him I needed to take several home for more extensive rust removal and prevention. Prevention being the key word. That could take a long, long, time.

I know a fellow like that. I told him not to store his pistols in their holsters. He said, "what should I use?".
I said to bet Crown Royal bags for each of them. He picks up the phone and tells whoever on the other side, "50 bottles of Crown Royal", looks at me and says, "You want 50 bottles of Crown? I don't drink that ****, but at least I'll have the bags."

Tell him if he wants to throw his money away to give me a
call instead of ruining fine old guns they don't make no more.
Either that or you can be a good friend to S&W by pointing
him towards Taurus or Rugers from now on.
Some people got more money than sense.

That's the great thing about America, it's his stuff and he can do with it how he pleases even if it don't make sense to the rest of us.

I'm not saying its your fault, but from the sounds of it, you should have known he'd not take care of them and suggested guns accordingly.

Darn shame. Hope there's no RMs or K-32s in there.
Stainless steel would be better for a guy with no common sense.

You can get stainless to rust if you try hard enough.

Ask him for the worse one and restore it yourself. I found a Dan Wesson model 15 that had been sitting in a wet case for two years and was a MESS! I spent a lot of free time resurfacing all the pieces and bringing it back to life. What a great feeling of accomplishment when done!

Here is what you should do...............
Since he has more money than he knows what to do with, make him an off to take care of his collection on a monthly basis and charge him for it. You can come by to do the cleaning and oiling and will be making a few bucks while doing so. It is not uncommon for people to grossly neglect their possessions - guns as well. I've got a few friends who are just like your fiend and I'll make a deal with them. I'll perform the task of cleaning and maintaining and they take me to lunch, dinner or buy a bottle of Single Barrel jack. It's a nice arrangement.
While I would NEVER charge a fiend to do a one shot "show me how" kind of maintenance, if they want me to do this on a regular schedule have them reciprocate. I am totally amazed at how many cleaning only jobs the LGS gets!

Not likely. Glocks can rust, but you usually have to work at it.

That sounds eerily similar to something he would say.

Man, that's enough to make you cry! I have a buddy who could be a twin. He was perfectly content to let the rain clean/wash his SS396 Chevelle and the same with all follwing vehicles. Most of his guns are in cardboard boxes of some type. Once in a while he gives them a whiff of WD40. He doesn't shoot them much. I have mentioned about rust and proper maintenance but I didn't pay for them and if he wanted he could buy a swimming pool of Renaissance Wax. I don't bug him too much so I guess that's why we are still friends.

Actually, a cardboard box of some type sounds like it would be head and shoulders better than a hard plastic gun case that I've used far too long for my guns, and my dad still uses for his Deer rifles.

Got a second cousin that does the same with his granddads mint Smith model 20! When I saw it in its holster...in a SOCK, I advised him to get a decent case for it, or sell it too me, since the man was my uncle. He just shrugged and said he keeps all his handguns stored the same way!
Fast forward to two weeks ago, he calls and wants to know how to get the rust off of his 629! I gave him some Scotch-Brite pads and showed him how to follow the grain, ain't heard back from the idgit nor did he offer to reimburse me for the pads! Hope this morons collection dies start to rust, then I'll make him pay me for the resto job! Dale
