The other day my nephew was looking at a Model 28 with a 4-inch barrel online. He is new at guns and isn't quite up on prices so I took a look at the gun. It was online and the photos were not too good but the guy wanted $550, which is top of the mark to me. The owner said he based his price on what he saw on Gunbroker, not a good start there. The first few pictures didn't show much other than the grips were not original. Then the other pictures came in, and they got much worse. There was rust and pitting on the top strap, the crane, the back of the cylinder, much of the lower part of the trigger guard and inside the top strap. I told my nephew that to offer the guy what is really worth would probably not go well, so I talked to the guy and listed all of the values, and I included photos of the pages just to show I wasn't trying to lowball him. I got a response none to flattering, mostly that he knew I was "one of those" buyers looking for a perfect gun to stick in a box. I also got a few other comments as well. I also noticed in one pic that he was taking it from the front, and the cylinder was full of hollowpoint rounds. I told my nephew to stick to some good places, (I have mentioned here) if he is in the mood for a decent Smith .357 (he's sure not getting mine!).
