Default Why you buy quality ammo.

Came across this at the LGS. A customer was using their indoor range. He brought his own ammo that he thought was quality just sold cheap.

I don't think S&W will warranty this.

This looks like a photo that has been kicking around the Net for a few years. I think that some descriptions of it say that the gun was blown with excessive handloads.

That is consistent with other photos that I've seen of guns blown with reloads.

And, no, S&W probably isn't going to replace it.

A little Mother's Mag and Flitz should fix that right up. I've seen a couple of those ka-booms myself. Thankfully I've never had one!

No, I was at the LGS right after this happened, and saw it for myself.

You are correct there has been a very similar photo floating around for a while.

The loads we're cheap alright..
Now to replace the revolver, thats another matter.
Takes alot to blow up an x-frame.
When i reload i'm slow, but meticulous.
I ALWAYS visually check the powder charges.
Wonder if the shooter still has a headache ??
We're there any digits laying on the floor of said range?
Oh, This is also why i NEVER buy handloads from anyone.
I'll only buy factory loaded ammo.

I knew those internal locks were no good.
Look what that one caused to happen.

Hand loads scare me because of stuff like that. I know my brain, and I'm pretty sure I'd skip a step or double a step. If I don't trust myself to do the job, why would I trust someone else's hand load. That kind of thing can happen with factory loads, too. The likelihood goes down more than a little.

Was the customer hurt or was anybody else hurt. I hope not.
Was a bullet or two stuck in the barrel? Can a single 357 round be charged with enough power to blow the top strap and two or three chambers out of a stainless steel S&W.

Just his feeling was hurt. He had his eyes, ears, and a hat on. He said he felt a couple things hit his hat. He said he will be at the place he bought the ammo first thing monday. I dought they will do anything.

I've had these pix on my computer for two years, in my "broken gun" file.

Picture #4 surely looks like the same pic, to me.

ROFLMAO!

I think that may be the one the Ruger fanboiz were passing around as proof that Rugers are stronger.

There is a VERY impressive photo of a kaboomed GP100 going around. Can't seem to find it though.

ok. While you think you got me you don't sir.

I saw the gun. I did not take the pic. My buddy at my LGS said he got a pic of it, and I told him to email it to me. That is the pic I got. I did not see it in a box. I saw it on the counter.

May the forum gods forgive me for posting the wrong pic received in an email.

I don't have a GP100 in my file, but I do have an SP101. Also a Redhawk where the barrel fell off.

Perhaps you just saw a similar firearm, not the one in the picture?!

But anyway, I do buy quality ammo and I know why.

That looks like an overdose of fast powder. There was a gs I used to go to that had several nice handguns on the wall that suffered the same fate, it is an eye opener and was a major factor in my decision to change my reloading habits, and equipment.

I do have a phone with a very ****** camera on it. Thanks for catching it Alpo I called my buddy this morning. I thanked him for sending me that pic, and getting me reamed on the forum.

I know it's not the very same, exact, revolver that is in the pic, now. It was a Smith and could be the same model.

My theory has always been that the loader either changed calibers or loads & forgot to change powder before loading up the Big Dogs. 20gr of Bullseye will make for a very short but interesting range session.

My bench always has one can and one can only of powder on it at a time.

I think I saw that one in a local pawn shop a couple of days ago. They only wanted $450.00 out the door. Good deal or not?

No, not for one with the lock. I'd only pay $250.00 for a blown up minty with the lock.

Offer them $400, but only if it's a CTG.

I would only pay $250.00 but it would have to come with the original grips and box. Reloading is not for amateurs. No radio, T.V. or alcohol or kibitzing from family or friends.

Years ago I had a friend with a S&W Victory revolver. He bought some reloads at a reputable gunstore that were described as "light target loads". They had cast bullets. He fired six rounds and couldn't eject the cases. He couldn't open the cylinder. He used a block of wood to bump the cyl open and drove the eject rod rearward to eject the cases. When he cleaned the gun large curly strips of lead fell out of the barrel. When he examined the paper box the cartridges came in they had a stout load of Bullseye. It was well up into the .357 load range and was in .38SPL cases. He took the rest back and chewed out the gun dealer. It takes a LOT to blow up a S&W.

Also years ago in the American Rifleman there was a story of a fellow who mixed two powders and loaded compressed loads in .44 magnum. He shot three rounds through a Model 29 and had to stop when the bulged cylinder would not pass the frame. This genius then took the same load and loaded into a Ruger Super Blackhawk. The result looked like the picture the OP posted.

Again, it takes a lot to grenade a S&W.
