Lightbulb question & request

Dear S&W Forum, I have a question and a request of my fellow forum members.

First the question how many of you have had the hammer spur removed from your double action revolver?

Now here is the request would you mind showing the gun or guns that have had the hammer spur removed.

The reason that i ask is because i have considered having the hammer spur taken off of my model 60, so that draw stroke will not snag the gun pouch i will be carrying the model 60 in.

Sincerely and respectfully mg357 a proud member of the s&w forum.

I had a 637 thus modified. I do not have a picture handy. I found it a useful modificatiin for pocket carry. I retained the single action notch on mine.

Don't break something that's already fixed.

You may need that hammer spur some day to cock the gun for a steadier, more accurate shot. You may need to shoot a snake or other smaller target than a man, too.

I realize the issue is controversial. Keep in mind that removing the spur may also void the warranty and look to a prosecutor like you altered the gun to a profile like somethng a gunfighter mentality wanted.

Finally, I don't know the full extent of your handicap, but if you have peripheral neuropathy, you may lose the muscular strength to effectively shoot DA . Being able to cock the hammer might let you still employ the gun.

Others will oppose these views, but I wanted both sides to be represented.

Good luck in reaching the decision that is best for you.

I think that you'd be WAY better off modifying the pouch to work with the gun instead of the other way around.
A small piece of something like slick leather at the top of the pouch....

I wouldn't modify my Model 60 carry gun for nobody or any reason. Sorry, but I may need the spur someday. This is especially true for my wife on her Model 36, her arthritis won't allow her to fire single handed double action, but she is very good at double thumb cocking the hammer and firing. Pretty fast at it too.

How the heck are you going to act out the Dirty Harry 6 shots or only 5 scene without a hammer?? Of course, with a j-frame, it will be "did I fire 5 shots or only 4?"

This one I have experience on. I bought this model 60 around 1969. I imediately bought a model 36 hammer, had it bobbed and the top checkered so it could be carefully cocked in SA mode. I loved that gun. I probley shot it more than most others put together as when I was prowling around I usualy put a couple rounds throught it. I carried it a lot just in my pocket with no problem. Finaly back in 2003 it got stolen along with my truck. Neither has shown up. I replaced it with a old model 40. The 40 is a blue hammerless verson of the 60. For some reason my model 40 slips around in my pocket, even turning upside down. The model 60 didnt. Maybe I wore tighter jeans back then. The 60 was accurate for me as I shot it more.
I would bob the hammer again on any J frame. Just buy a new hammer so you can preserve the original. I sold my originnal hammer to someone here.

Take a look at a Charter Arms "On Duty" for some ideas.

I was able to still cock mine. You pull the trigger back slight and catch the hammer with your thumb. Keep the muzzle at the target. For emergency use only...but then so is a precise SA shot.

You can always get a spare hammer to modify and keep the original intact.

I have one Mod 60 bobbed, but I also have several others that retain the hammer. This is the only one I have that is bobbed, and is for specific uses.

I left the hammer spur on my Model 60 and bought a snag-free 642. But that's just me.

I had the hammer bobbed on a Model 36 many years ago, and it reduced the mass of the hammer to the point where ignition of some brands of ammunition was a sometimes thing. I had to increase the weight of the mainspring (I put a little sleeve around the base so it was a little shorter and thus more powerful). You don't want to find out your ammo won't work when you're in a gunfight.

A defensive gun should be shot double action. If you do bob the hammer get lotsa practice shooting it in double action. If I remember correctly you have epilepsy and that shouldn't have that much of an effect on hand strength. With my neuropathy my thumb doesn't have sufficient strength to cock a hammer, so for me, the spur would be useless but I can still pull a trigger.

snubbyfan: As a matter of fact i do have epilepsy, and i agree with you a defensive gun should be shot double action, thats why i considered having the hammer spur removed.
in a self defense situation there is no time to shoot a single action shot at an attacker or attackers. Also i wll get lots of practice shooting the model 60 in double action.

Haveing a snubbed hammer that is reworked to be able to carefully cock IS a usefull benifit over a strictly DA like the model 40. If experiance matters at all, I carried my such altered model 60 for about 35 years that way. When I lost it as I said, I replaced it with a new/old model 40. I would rather have my model 60 back. For whatever reason I found myself actualy shooting it far more in the field than I now do my model 40. I got to where I could bounce cans all day. I doubt I am one piece as good with the model 40 as I carry but just dont shoot it. I shoot SA more accurately than I do DA. I admit I SHOULD practice DA more.
I never had a misfire with my model 60. I never shot at anyone with it but I did pull it once on two guys in a incident. I wasnt arrested and they were.

I was taught that if you pocket carry or similar where your worried about a snag. That when you draw and grab the grip you put your thumb on top of the hammer as you pull. Then once your clear just slide your thumb over and off the hammer.

You still are going to have holes in every pair of jeans untill you get rid of that hammer spur.

Don't know how epilepsy affects shooting, but I am very much in favor of bobbing the hammer. The one downside, which may not apply to your case, is that many holsters use the hammer spur for retention. My first gun was a Model 40, so I have a LOT of practice shooting DAO. I completed Massad Ayoob's LFI-1 using a Model 40. Most of my guns with bobbed hammers are DAO, because I am capable of using them that way for accurate shooting (although I find that for ACCURATE shooting, it is SLIGHTLY faster to cock a hammer with a spur and use SA; with a bobbed hammer, I would never try that, even if it still had the SA notch).

Someone who has hand strength problems would be better off with a Beretta .380 with a tip-up barrel, but for any other hand problems, it seems to me that DAO is much safer than a SA "hair trigger."

A bobbed hammer is safer than a 640 or 642, because there is a hammer to hold down while holstering. You can, however, learn to keep your finger behind the trigger while holstering.

I do not recommend choosing your gun based on what some gun-hating C******** *****-gobbling DA might think of your choice. However, you can consider that if you want to.

mg: My Model 60-7 is shown both with the original hammer in the first photo, and also with a hammer from a Model 38 Bodyguard to give it a semi-bobbed hammer in the second photo. I rarely carry the Model 60 in a pocket, but the model 38 is almost exclusively pocket carried (Uncle Mike's #3 pocket holster, or a DeSantis Nemesis). I have arthritis in my hands and wrists, and like the option of a precision, single-action shot if need be. By the way, the Model 38 is shown with a nickeled cylinder from the donor Bodyguard that I also got the hammer for the Model 60 from.

Best of luck,

Dave

Just had a thought. I wonder if a 642 hammer would work in a 60? It'd be an easy drop in, no spur replacement and you wouldn't have to hack up the factory hammer.

Default Just bought 4 hammers

from S&W for revolvers that will no longer have hammer spurs. To me they are in the way, and do not belong on guns I carry. I cannot remember the last time I cocked a revolver.
