Talking Luckily I was carrying tonight

I have gotten into the habbit recently of always carring a gun at home and away from home. It paid off tonight. I was in the bedroom, and looked at the big dresser, and wow....a huge spider was on top of the dresser. I drew my S&W M&P 9MM, ready to dispatch the spider, but my wife was there and said no. So, I used the butt of the gun to rid us of the spider. Goes to show, you never know when you will need the gun. Never even felt any recoil.

You were going to use a handgun to kill a spider? Seriously? Are you crazy? Everyone knows that's a job for a shotgun! Heck...if it was big enough I'd fall back and call for fire.

What's the best 9mm load for a wolf spider? How does the 9mm 147gr compare to the CTG?

Sir, be sure to get your hearing checked. Even if you didn't notice the report at the time, you've almost certainly damaged your hearing.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

In a perfect world, you'd have drawn a bead on the perp and offered cover so Mrs. Yardman could advance and do the dirty work with a rolled up copy of Home and Garden.

The last big spider we had in the house had the body about the size of a quarter. The wife jumped so high when she saw it in the bathroom there is a headprint on the ceiling. I dispatched him with chemical weapons in the form of lysol and then he was lost at sea when he got flushed down the toilet. I don't need any artillery for spiders, however since I can't bend over and set a mouse trap I have been carrying shot loads in my 649 to dispatch their furry little butts.

I also was wondering about the 9mm getting the job done. I shot Black Widow with a 40S&W. and was still worried it might have lived. Would have preferred the shotgun.

I like spiders. They eat insects. And they themselves make a tasty snack. What's not to like?

I hope P.E.T.S. does not hear of this. They will push for a total ban on newspapers, fly swatters and insect spray. (I know you were wondering...People for Ethical Treatment of Spiders)

Man, glad you and your wife are ok. That must have been one of those Okie Wolfe Grandaddy Longlegs. Those spiders can be hard to deal with. You guys stay safe.

Depends on the spider. Some species you'll just make 'em mad.

Wolf spiders get a pass in my house. They get carefully scooped up & taken to the yard.

I wasn't real pleased with the one that jumped out of nowhere, landed on me as I was laying in bed watching TV and sprinted across the bed only to disappear... well... don't know where. Never did find him.

Did your 9mm have a laser site and a tacool lite mounted for a clean clear kill. Was the newspaper properly registered according to your state law?

I have the same agreement with spiders as snakes. To wit, if I don't see them, I don't kill them. Most of both species are quite agreeable to my deal.

It has nothing to do with not liking them, I'm just terrified of them.

Keep in mind, you must allow a few spiders to be available, just in case your wife ever swallows a fly (I don't know why, she'd swallow the fly)......

Clearly you are using the English term. Many here are more familiar with the original French..."sabot". Using a sabot round to fire a light, small projectile at very high velocity is totally appropriate for Anti-Arachnid fire.

I encountered a tarantula spider on the tarmac of the Mazatlan, Mexico airport while walking from the plane to the terminal two days ago. I shot it with my Blackberry, since I cannot take any firearms to Mexico. (Not trying to hijack the thread)

I got bit by a spider ion the sole of my right foot.

Venom was coursing through my veins recently.

Luckily, it wasn't a brown recluse.

He got away though...

I'm glad you reported the incident so that it can be included in the statistics of guns actually being used to prevent crime? In this case the mere presence of a gun saved a couple from home invasion!

Um... am I the only one who questions the wisdom of using a loaded pistol as a hammer?

You wear a gun around the house?

I pick up unwanted critters and take them outside. Bad karma in unnecessary killing.

Horses for courses. I have a cat that makes insect life nearly unpossible in my home.

Trade you another true story for your true story:

My wife is terrified of spiders -- absolutely petrified.

A while back, there was a small one (to me, huge to her) crawling across our bedroom carpet, when she looked down and saw it.

She picked up the nearest thing she could find, which happened to be a WWI war trophy French 7mm pistol on the dresser. Unloaded, of course, but she didn't know that.

She proceeded to beat that spider to a pulp with the butt of the pistol, shrieking all the while, as I just watched. When she was done, I asked her if she knew the gun was loaded.

Her stricken look was hilarious!

I 'fessed up that I was teasing, but told her I intended to tell everybody I knew that she hated spiders so much, she pistol-whipped 'em to death!

we grow some BIG black widows here some years worse than others .
several years ago on a busy construction site ,i came across a huge b.w. it was right where i needed to work so i picked her up and carried her about 60 some feet and let her go in some grass and weeds; cause like saxon pig i try not to kill unnecessarily ,well anyway about 5-10 minutes later ,i turned around to see this spider walking past tools and extension cords intent on reprimanding me or returning to its lair or both. i laughed, picked it up and returned it to the weeds...it returned several more times until i realized this was only gonna end in heartache for one of us ...so i palmed my estwing and let 'er have it

When I was younger, I was in dad's garage helping him work on a car. He went inside and I was alone in there with a large spider. I took some carborator cleaner and let the spider have it. The spider fell on the floor acting all drugged, so what was I to do? I got a lighter and the carb cleaner became a nice flame thrower. There was the crackle crackle of flame broiled spider, then there was no more spider.

Next time the missus shrieks about a spider use an airgun (pump rifle works best) with NO projectiles at point blank, it will blow the spider to pieces. With the threat neutralized and the world saved your job is done, leave the clean up to her.

I just step on 'em, usually, or swat 'em with a rolled-up whatever is handy. I can't convince her to do either of those, though, because she says she can't stand the idea of the squish. Go figure.

Didn't seem to bother her, though, when she was turning that one into a grease spot on the carpet with that 7mm....

Silly boy...don't you know you're supposed to nuke it from orbit? It's the only way to be sure.
