When you CALL the GS.....
O M G.
After a day there on my supposedly low-stress p/t 'retirement job'.
Monday was crazy, Tuesday was worse. Today, if possible, was even worse than Tuesday.
ENDLESS throngs of people pouring in. Many with little to NO firearms knowledge.
And the darn phone - endlessly ringing with no one to answer it many times. Every employee covered up in work, filling out transfer forms, faxing multiple sales forms, running down ammo, magazines, accessories, etc.
AND - don't think this means 'big bucks' - all us guys there are p/t employees with no benefits.
SO - just a bit of helpful info..... If you are a person who decides to call a LGS during this time, try some of these suggestions:
- We are busy. Not just a little busy. CRAZY busy. We don't have time to discuss the merits of a piston AR versus a gas-operated AR.
And if you want to discuss the 'tier' principle of the most-to-least desirable AR's available, you are wasting our time and all those waiting for you to finish.
-We can't help that you are undecided on which two guns you are agonizing over the considered purchase of.
- The fact that you had really counted on this for Christmas is of no real importance to us or anyone else.
- 5.56/.223 ammo. No. we're SOLD OUT. What is so difficult to understand about that? Yes, we're trying to get more. No, we can't tell you when it will be here exactly, because we don't know ourselves.
- AR/AK magazines. Sorry, we're sold out. See note above.
- When you call about pricing various Glock/XD/FN (insert other plastic pistols), try being succinct. Please don't torture us with 'uhhh's, and 'ummmm's, and stories of how you recently went out with your cousin with his Glock and how much you liked it and on and on and on, ad nauseum. I mean, really, do you really think we want to hear that when the store is at 'Fire-Marshal-capacity'?
-Educate YOURSELF about holsters and carry methods.
Having worked at three (3) different GS's over the years, I find it absolutely amazing that the average gun-owner/buyer cannot select a holster without hands-on assistance. That's almost scary.
Time to re-fill my glass of settle-down, Ya'll have a Merry Christmas. I'm so glad that I'm OFF the remainder!

How many times were you asked if they could shoot +P in this one, or if you could help them find some CTG ammo for Granddad's old revolver?

No, sorry truckemup97, most of the time when I try to explain the entire concept of +P ammo versus standard ammo, I see eyes glazing over.

Jeeez Old...Perhaps you should just give everyone your home phone number so they can consult with you when you can spend more time with them and give them your undivided attention.

I think this belongs with Joewisc's thread on "Unintended Consequences".

having 3 fingers of a smooth liquid is a good thing. shareing is a good thing. if someone brings over a bottle is a good thing. as a retired person it seems that most of the people i`ve tried to help w/ suggestions on purchaseing weapons or going out shooting my weapons so they could decide on weapon concerns over the summer, because they wanted to buy a gun, and they didn`t have the time. they are now calling from a LGS and are asking me what i think of a weapon they have in their hand. i can relate to them what i know, thru use, and reading the threads on this good forum. but my wifes friend was asking me about a weapon that i suggested not to buy. but she liked because it had a laser on it. then she got irate w/ me. she hasn`t called back. oh well!! shared my sipping vodkla last week, so i just went to pour 2 fingers of ameretta. i enjoy this forum. now i can share a couple of fingers, and relax, tommorrow is another day. everyone have a good week. old corp, just read your off for a few days, enjoy your time off. lately when i go to the range i end up helping a new shooter, or meet someone that has 6 weapons that they want you to shoot. after i shot 3 weapons and i showed him my new M&P, he pulled back his coat and showed me the 3 M&P`s that were on his belt. now that was a good share. he lined them up, but i passed on testing them.

Retailing when you're slammed sucks if you can be held captive. I perfected the art of talking over my shoulder as I was walking away from fools/time wasters but you can't always do that. Sometimes they can corner you but "walk fast and carry a clipboard" is good retail advice. It all pays the same and occasionally low information customers have fat wallets.

One of my gun pushers isn't answering his phone. He has a recording that says "Any questions about gun laws, high cap mags, or assault rifles cannot be answered at this time. If you need help please come to the store and take a number." I've got what I need. I just wish I hadn't traded off that AK last week.

I stopped in my LGS today, just to see how the crowd was. I saw good things there, lots of folks but folks with good questions. One little old lady and her husband were in and wanted to buy a gun. The owner of the store talked to them for a while and asked if they had ever owned a gun. They said no, and he told them he wouldn't sell them one. Then he directed them where to get some training and practice. That was very responsible, not just someone trying to earn a buck.
BTW, the black guns are gone, the mags are gone, all the semiautos except for .22s were gone, but there were three very nice old Smiths in the case!

Responsible yes, but the kicker is there is a hint of, I know what's best for you in that. Seems there is a lot of that going aroundow days. All in all, I may have done the same.

I just don't pay any attention to the people behind the counter. That way, I leave with my sanity and my intelligence!

2 nights ago I was window shopping on Buds website and there were 6400 customers online LOL. It has quieted down a bit since then.
Here where I live, there are only 2 real mom and pop gun shops. I called the more popular one on Monday to inquire about an M&P9c and a trade-in. He is always expensive. He had it for $569 (MRSP), so I took another route online and found one for $467.

In this economy, and NOT considering the reasons why this is happening, I'm sure that any retailer is happy to be crowded and busy! I know I would put up with some frustrations to make some money...and then they go home at night and wonder how much longer they will be in business.
What a roller coaster of emotion.

I was at Sportsman's today and got a kick out of watching the guy behind the gun counter answer the phone, over, and over and over... The expression on his face said it all. I really have to commend him for his patience. Typical call: "No sir, we don't have any. No, don't know when we might get them in. The truck hasn't been unloaded yet, we won't know what's on it until we unload it. No sir, the truck's not even in the loading dock. No sir, not until we unload it. No, I don't know...." All the while there are three young guys standing there listening. When he finally gets off the phone, one asks, "Do you know when you're getting more Glocks?" Even I wanted to pummel the kid.

My brother is a partner in a group that owns five or six pawn shops in Columbus, GA, Phenix City, ALA, Dothan, ALA, Panama City and Jacksonville, FLA. Understand, these aren't big box stores, just your normal fair sized pawn shops and sporting goods stores. Nothing nearly the size of a Dick's or Academy. The manager and "overseer" of the stores said that their stores have done a quarter of a million dollars in business on Tuesday and Wednesday. The store where I do most of my gun business (when I buy from a dealer), Barrow Automotive, is also mentioned in the article. The manager of the gun department at Barrows told me at Church last Sunday that they get in from 25 to 50 ARs of various kinds from their distributers every day.
I don't even try to go in the store this time of year. I will wait until the first or second week in January and go check to see what they took in trade over Christmas.
