I respect the Marine for his service an devotion to protect our country and children. But I do not want to see that our schools have to be guarded in a military or police fashion. Our country is better than that.

Something needs to be done to find out why, why these killings are happening and address what needs to be cured. Be it some mental illness, depression, or medications. Fix the problem.

That Marine is a hero in my eyes. I believe every school in the United States need at LEAST one armed official to do nothing more than stand watch from inside or outside the school. They don't have to talk to the kids, watch them, correct their actions..... just PROTECT THEM.

There's several thousand trained LEO's, Marines, and other branches of military retired or possibly out of work than could do this for 8 hours a day for a decent pay since they are protecting the lives of kids.

Like most arguments on blogs & articles from other firearm enthusiasts and professionals..."Criminals and the deranged strike where they know they won't be challenged, because they're cowards and prey on the undefended".

Yes, but until we find out why this is what needs to be done.

Can you imagine the positive effect this will have on those kids?

Children are defenseless. It is our duty to protect them at all costs no matter how it looks.

Eugene,
I am also a Viet vet. I would gladly serve at my school if allowed and no pay needed. I do not need an AW? to take on some deranged idiot. I am in excellent physical shape after 61 years on this planet.

I don't want to see uniformed military guards on my 6 year olds school grounds toting the very same weapons(look the same) that are under scrutiny for civilians. Many CA schools have a local FTO on school grounds while school is in session some have as many 2 FTO's. They have an office on school grounds the kids know these officers and many have their entire elementary and high school experience with the same officer. The Officer learns about most if not all of the goings on with the student body and is able to respond with lethal force if need be.In light of the whacky things CA does this is an highly effective method of curtailing these events in schools that have these programs. I think some enhancement on current programs that use the FTO's to fit local conditions will be developed. A local police uniform is less upsetting than military uniforms and the nomenclature.

longranger,
The main problem is the costs associated with LEO being on campus. With all the resources available(retired LEO, military etc.) The savings to the schools would be dramatic. Also the LEO's could go back to regular duty saving the local gov. money. It will never happen but one can hope.

I'm not sure that we need to "study" the problem until we know the motivation of predatory mass shooters. The point is to prevent them from carrying out their sick plans, not to plumb their psyches. I doubt we will ever fully understand evil, whether it is someone kicking a puppy, a suicide bomber, or a school shooter. The issue is stopping them.

A minimum approach would be to harden the target and provide on-site security. Translation--make the building harder for a shooter to access, and qualified armed individuals that could deter a shooter and respond promptly and forcefully to an event. That's essentially what the Israelis did after Maalot.

If we're not careful we could well end up with a federal "SSA"--"School Security Administration" and the equivalent of another cumbrous TSA doing kabuki theater. If something needs doing it should be done at the state and local level. Properly screened volunteers could work out well. Sorry, I don't think arming teachers is a particularly good idea. Too much PC and wrong mindset.

As for how "aggressive" security people should be, that's a matter of opinion. Maybe we don't need someone standing around with an M4, but frankly I don't have a problem with it. Fortunately (or unfortunately) we can get used to anything. But for God's sake, we can't do nothing.

With luck my grandson will be home schooled...

I am not buying "we can't afford it" argument, the money could easily be found in the **** we really don't need. I am all for retired ,trained, vetted professionals to do it for free. What I don't want is Bubba with a CCW and some camouflage thinking he's trained and equipped to deal with any situation. Not sure how the training differs for soldier vs LEO, substantial in some areas surely. Many would have dual back grounds,But I'm a "Veteran" from Vietnam is not going to be useful in a school setting Unless that is followed up by recent formal subsequent training on tactics and strategy, that's not free.

To me this needs immediate action . Our children are our future . Either we can step up to protect as is our duty or we can watch the sun set on our country . Good point on police vs military training was different ( at least in my day ) . Also agree we don't need Bubba nor TSA clones .

These sick ******* take themselves out when they are confronted with authority. They also target gun free zones. Two simple solutions: eliminate gun free zones, and post armed authority. Even signs that say "We are armed and will defend our children" would eliminate the threat.

BTW, I AM bubba! Ask anyone!

No one WANTS schools to have to be guarded, but they do. While we may have a few more nut cases running around than we would if we reacted sensibly to them, there will always be some, and we we should not wait to find a permanent 100% cure before we start protecting our children. We may never find such a cure. We need to prepare for the observable fact that there ARE some nuts out and about.

How about this?

Well - - - I respect the man for wanting to protect others, but there are a few problems with this.

First of all, there is no 'school gun problem'. The event which happened recently is a horrible tragedy, but highly rare and unlikely to occur. Youre more likely to be hit by lightening than be involved in such an event. (Research the number of victims of such mass shootings over the last 10 years in the US versus those struck by lightening).

Secondly, while his actions may make him feel better - it isnt particularly sound tactically. He has no weapon. His location is obvious since he's in a uniform. If a shooter were to come to the school (highly unlikely, see above) did he think he would just scare him away because he is in uniform ?

What would be far more effective is the end of the "No Gun Zone" law and allowing citizens who legally concealed carry to be on school grounds. A potential attacker (again, highly unlikely to happen) would not know who is or is not armed. In places like Israel and Switzerland where citizens are armed, schoolyards are safer. John Lott has proven in his work that places are safer when there are citizens carrying concealed.

A common factor with just about all the mass shooting events was that the shooter was taking psychiatric drugs which can increase the odds of suicidal and violent behavior. Thats where investigation should focus. Even some combat troops are on such drugs today, and the suicide rates of our troops are unsually high now.

I agree with others that I don't want to see America turned into some armed camp with guards on every corner and on every highway. Especially to 'keep us safe' from unlikely events. All that is guaranteed from that is the loss of our Liberty. Liberty - - - isn't that the point and the real vision of America ?

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - - - Benjamen Franklin

The Marine should put his uniform away and push to get No Gun Zone laws repealed. Then visit the school in low profile civvies with his CPL and appropriate sidearm in a IWB holster that doesnt print.

Emotional responses aren't effective. Smart responses are effective.
