Default Info needed on Savage lever action in 308

My LGS has one in 308 and another in 243. Asking price is $500 for each one. What should one look for when buying a used one of these rifles. Is the asking price reasonable.

I never owned of of those, but always thought they were neat rifles. Besides the standard things to look for when buying any used gun, I'd do a special check of the detachable four round magazine. In my experience detachable magazines take more abuse than the firearm they are meant for. I'm not sure what the availability of a replacement magazine would be. I have not seen a Savage Model 99 for years, so could not comment on the going price. I looked it up in the 1990 Guns & Ammo Annual, and the MSRP for one in 1990 was $588. If I had bought one then new at that time I would have expected to get the price down to $500.

Ironically, I just saw one of those about 30 minutes ago at the Firing Line in Denver. First one I ever saw that didn't have the cartridge counter. This one happened to be a rusted beat up piece, I didn't even look at the price.

If they look good with no extra holes or crack in the stock at the wrist, take them home!!!

I've been thinking of one near me, a Model 99 in .308 for $650. I'm very tempted. So, at $500, I would have it home by now if it checked out OK. My granddad's Model 99 in .303 Savage is still taking deer. A marvelous rifle. I have a Model 12 VSS (Heavy, fluted V for Varmint barrel in .308/7.62 x 54, Stainless Steel, bolt action with the Accutrigger. It is a very accurate rifle. It would be nice to have a grandad rifle in the same caliber.

Full disclosure, I'm a big Savage fan. I have a 93R17 BVSS (.17 HMR) and a Model 16 FCSS Weather Warrior in .223/5.56 x 45. each of those two will shoot around a half inch at a 100 yards. They were like that out of the box.

If they're pre-mils (serial number less than a million) and are in good to excellent condition, I'd have bought them both in the wink of an eye. Personally, the only post mil model I find attractive is the late-A or straight stocked carbine version made in the '70's and again if in good to excellent condition would buy them both for that price. Beyond that it would depend on the condition and how much I wanted one for a shooter. Where I'm from, I haven't seen '99's priced less than $500 for several years now.
