Bridgeport gun buyback off to strong start - Connecticut Post

I don't have a huge budget for guns and there's a $#@#!% Model 15 that is in rough, but usable shape going to the crusher because people in this country have their heads squarely planted up their *****!

Sorry, I had to vent to people who might understand. We are living in an unholy land--it's like a witch hunt, or Hitler Youth burning books.

The woman with the Kel-Tec is a completely irrational fool, too. Do these people not trust themselves or what exactly are they saying? That they can't keep control of a single firearm? She says she bought the handgun for her personal defense because she lives alone. How has the shooting in CT changed her personal situation one iota? Stupid, stupid fools everywhere!

I liked the "22 caliber shotgun". That would seem to be a very rare collectors item.

Remington and a few others made them.
They had an "SB" suffix to denote smooth bore.

I wonder how much they'd give me for my pellet gun? Could trade for that guy's M15?

I can understand the do-gooder impulse, however ineffectual, but the reporting here is awful. "[C]ity police had paid out $5,000 to get 40 guns, including five assault weapons, off the streets." The streets? Hell, these 40 weapons were in closets and safes and bureau drawers where they'd been untouched for many years.

If you want to get guns off the streets, you're not going to do it by getting old ladies to turn in their .380s.

I do not feel for ANY of the people who are turning in their arms. They get exactly what they want and what they deserve in the end. Remember the words of the founding father in regards regarding giving up freedom for security. There is a real good reason the 2nd is in the Constitution.

A couple of hundred years ago or so these types of folks would have undoubtedly been called Turncoats or Loyalists.

Admitting defeat, and living in fear, before the fight starts they surrender up front hoping for a better seat at the table when the invader is in charge.

My bet is that in a few weeks when the anti-gun fervor dies down, there will be a lot of “Turn-In Remorse.”

With all the panic & hysteria,,I doubt this story from a few weeks ago will end up as originally talked about.

Gun buy back with a happy ending (sort of)

I hate the way they call it a "buyback".

Buy back? As if the local govt. was the one that sold the gun in the first place and are now "buying it back".

They should call it what it is - a gun price screw-over.

Next "buyback" if your state allows FTF sales, grab some cash, make a sign with "$100/gun" and stand across the street. See what you get!?!?!

I know a guy (online) who did that. Got a bunch of rifles

If 21 people waiting in the buy back line is considered a strong turnout, the crowds outside gun shops this past week qualify as tsunamis.

Bridgeport is one of the highest crime rate cities in Connecticut. Any law-abiding resident who voluntarily turns in a firearm for pennies on the dollar is a fool.

What you ill informed louts of gun nuts fail to understand is that all firearms have a form of mind control. An assault snub nosed revolver can sit in someones sock drawer for decades. One day that evil revolver starts projecting it's mind control waves. It will completly posses the mind of who ever is in the room at the time. That person will be forced, against their will, to take up the 75 year old assault revolver out of the sock drawer, and will under its diabolical control run into the streets and start shooting up the neighborhood. And that is why we have gun buy backs, with the tax payers $$ of course. It is so that these evil firearms that have been lurking forgotten in drawers and closets, can be broght into the local police and traded for harmless taxpayer $$. The alternate is that some simple liberal minded person falls under the temporary propaganda and thought control of the NRA, or gun lobby. They go out and buy a handgun for self protection. They then come to their senses and realize that firearms can take over their mind and body, as well as being more dangerous for the owner than to criminals. They usually learn this from the wise media. Therefore at the next buy buy back they turn their evil and dangerous handgun which probably cost them many hundreds of $$, in for the equivilent of a tank of gas for a Prius. And that is why we have gun buy backs and why people feel good about turning perfectly good firearms in to their local government to be destroyed. S/O

It isn't really any skin off my nose, still if they have $200,000 to spend there are other ways that reduce crime more (Police overtime). I agree that it is unlikely that these guns would have been used in crime. That is like buying cars to keep them from becoming getaway cars.

A fellow gave me a Jennings 9mm years ago. I'd break out into hysterical
laughter at the sucker who forked over $200 to me for it.
Alot of nice looking pieces i see there but quite a few people look to
have got the better end of the deal judging from the look of some of
those top break single shot shotguns and such. I feel bad for some of
the old folk who might have nothing to meet a prowler or something
going bump in the night. Elderly are so often preyed upon. Of all those
guns most were taken from law abiding citizens but in all honesty some,
even if a small percentage may very well have been stolen and taken off
the street by some chap looking for a quick fix, or has moved on from a life of
crime, and maybe even looking to put some groceries on the table or a gift
under the tree.Even that very small percentage may equal one life and the price
of that life far exceeds the 100k used to fund this initiative. IMO
Gl and have fun, oh and Merry Christmas
Dave

Most of the gun buy back programs end up netting nothing but junk. RG's and Iver Johnson owlheads, single shot .22's , and taped up single shot shotguns, Once in a while some dufus will turn in their grandfathers S&W or Colt. The object is to make people FEEL better while doing absolutely nothing about the problem at hand. It is something visible authorities can show the T.V. cameras with a voice over of how much has been done to make the streets safer.

I have already offered two shivering libs I know that I will leave an AR-15 with the 30 rd. mass destruction "clip" on a card table in their home or mine, and I would watch over it for the day. They could join me if they liked. I offered them any amount they would like to wager that the "Military Automatic Machine Gun " would not get up from the table and shoot anyone on its own. They did not take me up on the offer. Boy, was I surprised!

Anyone with any sense would keep their guns.
Stupid idiots shouldn't be armed in the first place, being idiots they might hurt someone at an inopportune moment, therefore if they want to voluntarily disarm themselves, that's fine with me. The shame is that some very nice firearms will be destroyed in the process.

Emotionalism, pure and simple.

They should call this program "Sell your gun for chump change". No doubt some of this stuff is worthless junk, but I saw some nice S&W revolvers and one S&W semi in the pictures.

Some people are sure to be cheated out of money they could use by selling valuable firearms at hundreds below market value.

If Bridgeport was a corporation, the Board of Directors would be liable to a derivative suit by shareholders over failure in their fiduciary duty to maximize profit by selling the bought-back guns to the highest responsible and lawful bidder.

...didn't think this would be my first post on this site...but as inane (and insane) as this kind of response to bad things that happen is...it is a shame to lose some really good wheelguns as a result of all of this now (and in the future, because it won't be the last time sadly) ...for the rest of us, the quantity goes down and the values will go up...while we can't stop them from doing this, it is really heartbreaking that we can't at least require them to post pictures first (along with s#, mdl, etc) so that we could say a proper goodbye to superior S&W craftsmanship...even the beat up ones deserve a sympathetic thought regarding all they might have been through in their existence...so long old friends...

Many more people have been killed by vehicles and doctors. Do I need to turn in my truck and my doctor? What these morons don't realize is that while they were lined up slowly turning in their guns millions more were being sold at the same time because of policies made by people like them. That and the fact that some of them thought they were getting a good price for them.

I have yet to hear of a "Turn in your controlled substances" or "Turn in your counterfeit money" "buyback" program.

I'm with GaryS. If those folks had known what some of those firearms were worth I doubt that they would be turning them in for chump change.
Probably would have gotten a better deal at a local gun shop. Frank

I'm pleased to see natural selection is alive and well.

I'm disappointed to see we've become a nation of cowards and hoplophobes.

Heck, even in this thread a member has stated the buy back was "worth it if it saves one life". Really? I seriously doubt that buy back saved a life.

Aloha,

I'm waiting for the $200 gun turn in.

I have 3 that I will be happy to turn in for $200 each.

I will be making a good profit on each.

All are unsafe to fire. One not even good for parts.

The others will be stripped frames.

A guy I know walked away from the last buy back with over $300.

He turned in unusable Stripped frames only. Sold the parts for a profit.

I believe they had an armorer to ensure the guns they were buying would fire. I know some folks who buy junk guns just to sell in these buyback programs.

They have a pastor in Albany. NY that gets on his soapbox every few months or so and gets some donations together to get guns off the streets in his buybacks. No questions asked, not surprisingly most end up as stolen from local homes and what not and the rest are junkers from the bottoms of the river and sewers. He thinks he is doing himself and the neighborhood a favor but I talked to one cop once about it and he told me that there are a lot of murders that have gone unsolved because the no questions asked part of it has netted a couple of murder weapons with no way to prosecute since the Pastor is the one handing out the money. All it does is give the local gang bangers a chance to dump their guns and go out and get more.I saw if people want to disarm themselves, go for it. These people are the ones Obama and Schumer and the rest of their kind that say "and there are gun owners who I know support these types of common sense measures." When your house gets broken into, I hope you can hit him with whatever you bought with that trade in money.

I dont think everything is what it seems here.

I know some folks that buy junk to sell off at these things, pay $50 get more.

The local gun shops just dont pay much for some of these guns. The mod 15, I bet they offered him $100 for it. I'd bet the rifles are off brands and or calibers worth very little. I am sure a gem or two find there way but most of it is trash.

People who dont know how to sell these things and for what ever reason dont want them anymore just want them gone. They dont care about a few dollars one way or another. If you do not have a permit you aren't supposed to take it out of your home. This is an amnesty on that. In CT you can sell hand guns privately but you need to file forms, call in a nics check then file the forms with the state.

Some of these guns are found on the streets and picked up. Some are taken from there kids that should not have them anyhow.

The buy back does not bother me but what they do with some of these things afterwards does. The good stuff could be sold and real money generated.

The factory my dad worked out had an iron foundry (until 1971) the police from all around the county would come over a few times per year to throw guns into the crucible of molten iron, gone for ever...

A lot of guns are destroyed by our government in a years time. I read of a fellow in Florida who would take them fishing and throw them overboard. I have seen crushed guns here in Asheville. The issues i have are 1) waste of money, and 2) are all the guns really destroyed or are some taken home?

Really, as long as they aren't doing it to my guns it is OK with me.

Stupid, stupid fools everywhere!
yeah....oooo look at all the criminals turning in their guns.

One thing comes to mind: Better to have a gun and not need it than to not have a gun and need it.

people that are turning in the guns have no licence, they are braking the law while carrying them to the police, what happen if they use them in a crime, before they turn them in.

I would like to propose an experiment to determine if all the guns from a gun buy-back are destroyed, but I need some cooperation. If anyone here has a 1911A1 made by Singer, send the gun to me. I'll hold it until the next buy-back. Then I will turn it in at the next buy-back, I'll send the donor the $200 or whatever, and if the gun is not destroyed, I'll get the gun back and return it. If it does get destroyed, I'll send the donor my regrets.

If there is anyone here who would like to participate in this experiment but doesn't have a Singer, then send me whatever rare gun you have. What have you got to lose?

Much like getting the "I voted today" sticker when you vote. I believe these thoughtful citizens should be given large yard signs that say "I turned in all my guns today" to proudly and prominently display in front of their residence for all to see.

Actually, my Grandad had a "22 caliber shotgun." It was a Remington pump .22, smooth bored, and it fired the little crimped .22 shot shells that used to be fairly common. Not sure if they even make them any more. It was used for a sort of mini-trap game that was called "mo skeet." It used little clay targets with a thrower - he was very good at it. My brother shot out a window in his house with it once (oops!). I've seen them cataloged in old Gun Digests, but his was the only one I ever actually saw.

Buy Back programs should be like Swap Meets... those wishing to turn their guns in and get paid with tax dollars, should be allowed to do so as long as those paying the bill -taxpayers - should have the opportunity to offset the expense by being able to have the first right of refusal and re-purchase what is now "public property" before it gets sent to the smelter.

I was born in Bridgeport and lived there until I was about 5 or 6. We didn't have much money and grew up in one of the lesser neighborhoods. It is the type of place where law-abiding citizens should own guns for personal protection of their homes and lives.

Gun buy-back programs really bug me and IMHO do little to keep crime off the street.

im not saying that i support ANY gun control measures, but those "forgotten guns " in closets and sock drawers are easily found during a break-in and are too easily accessed by unsupervised children.
i respectfully submit that guns that are not properly stored are potentially dangerous to innocent people. if these unwilling gun owners want to be rid of their guns i say, please do.

I agree, but I don't think that they should just turn them in for pennies on the dollar or send firearms with historic value to the smelter. As more and more of the WWII/Korean War generation dies off, their widows and families are likely to find bring backs and other weapons that were stashed away and never talked about.

If this type of thing were really about getting guns out of the hands of those who don't want them, gun buybacks would be done in conjunction with FFLs who could appraise the weapons and make reasonable offers. Many of the guns are likely to be junk, worth only what the police are willing to pay, but some number of them are going to be worth way more.
