He was great in "Tootsie."
Just saw Jack Klugman died too. Sad Christmases for the families. Thanks for the body of work gentlemen!

There is a thread here about NCIS and many of us agree the episode with Mr. Durning was one of our favorites.

Loved him as Pappy O'Daniel in O' Brother Where Art Thou and a rare turn was in the Burt Reynolds movie Stick. I remember him doing a lot of good acting and the NCIS episode was excellent.

I was unaware of his D-Day landing on Omaha, his wounds or being a survivor of Malmedy. I've always enjoyed his work and he deserved an Emmy for the NCIS episode. He and Klugman did some great work. RIP.

Charles Durning dead at 89.
I don't get all the many postings on various sites when I read that some Hollywood celeb has passed away. It's gonna happen to all of us and I am sure there are many, many more regular Joes who contributed more than any celeb did.
BUT, Charles Durning, Silver Star, three Purple Hearts, the only member of his unit to survive the D-Day landings and aftermath. Bayoneted by a German soldier that he then killed with a rock. Captured at the Battle of the Bulge and apparently narrowly escaping execution.
And, I enjoyed his characters.
EDITED TO ADD: I always wonder why other posters (not necessarily this forum) fail to notice that their subject has already been posted. Well, ooooops! I looked, but failed to see that Sip had already posted this. Sorry, and maybe I can just plead overfilled with Christmas cookies, etc., so that my vision was impaired.

I don't understand all the attention the typical Holly wood losers get either...
RIP Mr Durning. You were obviously a not cut from the same cloth as today's Hollyweird types. We appreciate your substantial contributions to freedom and decency though your military service.

We lose another of the great ones today. So sad......maybe the Mayans were right, it's just moving a little slower.

RIP Mr. Durning. I was interested in the recent NCIS thread too. I have never seen Mr. Durnings' episode. Maybe they will replay it soon in a tribute to him!

Despite a massive body of work, Charles Durning will always be Lt. Snyder in "The Sting" to me ...
This is the type of man we should always be honoring ... he is truly one of the last of a dying breed.
