Default 7 round magazines

I must admit that I am a little concerned since NY passed a bill to restrict owners of weapons to 7 rounds. The governor of Ct. was heard on tv tonight saying that 10 or 7 rounds was good for him. Other than the Colt 1911's, how many factory mags are available for 7 rounds. I don't see any made for the SW MP series. How many manufacturers will produce mags of differing sizes if different states make their own rules? Why can't this be challenged by the NRA? At least have everyone stick to the 10 round federal size if it comes to that.

There - you now see perfectly how this works. Get everyone so worked up about 7 rounds, that they are happy to accept 10 rounds as the maximum allowable.
Wow

That number, 7, was not arbitrary. They chose it because it was more than most revolvers hold, but fewer rounds than most semi-autos. They can now claim they aren't restricting sportsmen or target shooters because they were magnanimous enough to allow guns that carry more than wheel guns.....which aren't evil military style weapons.

Add to that that there are nearly zero seven round mags available for most handguns and rifles and you have a defacto to ban on hundreds of weapons not specifically addressed by the legislation.

Even the venerable M1 is now illegal by default in NY as it uses an 8 round enbloc, which I am sure that crowd would consider a "magazine."

the M1 is not listed on the NYS police website as a firearm falling under the law.........will it be? who knows

I wonder if the NRA has enough money to pay the legal fees to file suit against every state the passes these silly magazine restriction laws, and then fight it all the way to the supreme court? The states have the tax payers money to spend on legal fees. The NRA only has what it can collect, and we are talking possibly million upon millions of $$$ to fight a half dozen or dozen different states. In states like NY, Mass., Ma. NJ etc. The few gun owners may just have to suffer because their neighbors elect anti-gun politicians. It may come to that on a federal level also. The few voters with sense may have to suffer because the majority re elected Obama.

Do we really want to prove and establish that federal law trumps state law in this matter? Do we really want the federal standards to be extended any more? I'm not sure how this works out. May be a second amendement issue and a tenth.

Does the 7 round limit apply to bolt action rifles too?

Does it apply to, say Ruger mark 2 semi-auto .22's that carry 10 in the magazine?

If this becomes a reality and there is a new standard requirement for a magazines maximum capacity, will it apply to everyone? Will LEO have to comply or will they be exempt. If they are still able to use the standard mag size that would then be considered a higher capacity mag. What happens when they leave the force? Will they have to surrender their higher capacity mags and will this be documented. Or is this going to be another double standard law. I'm sure the Secret Service will carry only 7-10 round clips to right.

I'm sure glad I'm not in New York. I don't think a 7 round mag is available for my 1907 or 1917 Savages. I doubt companies are getting tooled up to make them either.

What about 22 lever action guns. The Marlin, Henery, Browning, Uberti. They all hold 17 or more in the tube depending on what they are IE, Long Rifels, Longs or Shorts.

Hayden.

Im not too worried about my 14 rounders for my sd getting taken away. My buddies who are currently in and out of the military said they wont comply and I doubt my deputy sherriff buddy will either as most of them own guns that hold 10 or more rounds. They can have them when Im dead in a pile of 14 40cal brass cases.

My understanding is that you could still have "10" round magazines. You just can't legally load more than 7 rounds in them or you're subject to a misdemeanor. These lawmakers have no clue....

Cuomo isn't going to do anything, because he can't. Yeah these silly laws were passed, but no cop in his right mind is going to try and enforce this ****. More smoke and mirrors to look good to the lame brains.

I was wondering about that too. Would a Winchester 1892 that holds 12 rounds be illegal? Would they try to arrest Lucus Mccain?

NO, you needed to own them before the day of the signing.

Lever guns exempt, only detachable magazine fed guns are affected

Yep. I firmly believe that the Act is really a negotiating position for when New York gets taken to court. Then they can come over all magnanimous and say OK to 10 round mags. Yeah, right.

If the magazine capacity laws are even more draconian is it possible to pin the magazines to not accept more than the 7 rounds. Drill them and insert a limiting pin?

I wonder about enforcement.

Here in CA, guys will put in a pin or a plug (large mag), to remain compliant.

Don't worry about selling or dumping your mags. There are many members in more gun friendly states that will rush to your adds.

How much you want to bet those shmucks in NY asked for 7 (not 8,9 or 10) rounds since so many single stack 9s use 8 round mags...I bet they wanted to make all the existing mags for those unusable.

BINGO! That's exactly what this utterly nonsensical law states.

OTOH , even though I don't live or ever go to NY , my most often carried guns are my Colt Commander - 7rd mag , Star M-43 Firestar - 7rd mag , Kel-Tec P3AT - 6rd mag, and a S&W Mod.37 - 5 shot revolver.

This will end up as a national restriction at 10 rounds, and there will be those in Congress who will feel they struck a good deal.

I work security on a Federal contract in Virginia. I carry a Glock Model 17 and three 17 round magazines.

I wonder how this will affect those private security officers in New York that also work at IRS buildings, Social Security offices, etc?

We're on the free side of the PA-NY border, and my LGS has spoken with several NY LEOs who said they are ignoring the 7 round nonsense. Quite a few NY buyers have already brought in "banned" firearms that now reside on the consignment rack. It is ridiculous ...

How long you been down on the river?
I regret to inform you that all hope for states rights had vanished from the earth by the late afternoon of July 3, 1863 at a stone wall.......and from their graves, the Federalists smiled.

It gives me hope to hear from LEOs both on this forum and from their own lips in my state that they consider this 7 round capacity to be ridiculus and they will not enforce it. It would give me more hope if the estimated 1.1 million owners of the banned military style rifles would speak with one voice and just say NO!

Default Obvious solution

Like Jews escaping Nazi Germany, it is time to leave New York.

I was forced to live in Plattsburgh, NY from 1970 to 1973 by the air force. Just one more reaseon not to go back.

This whole mess reminds me of TSA and air travel safety, not effective but the government did something.

I'm surprised those idiots in NY didn't make you plug one of the barrels in your derringer.

I know what you mean but I always just use the year 1865. I am disgusted at the number of people that have no idea what we are talking about. There were no more states rights. Larry

Better yet, use a long screw. Then if they change their minds again, you just adjust the screw

This number (7) was not picked at random. They can say they are not taking away your 2nd A rights but at the same time add a clause to make it impossible to possess most pistols. And I doubt simply carrying 7 rounds in a magazine designed for more will cut it, nor will modifying the magazine. The magazines "capacity" must be no more than 7.
