Disgusting Ingredients in Commerical Pet Foods
The earlier thread today about feeding your dogs table scraps brought to mind a discussion here on the forum from long ago. Rather than hijack that thread, I decided to start a new one.
About 4 or 5 years ago there was an excellent thread here on the fourm about the ingreadents in most of the very popular commerical pet foods.
One of the things that I could never forget was that most (IIRC) of the large commerical processors of dry pet foods used the bodys of euthanized animals, including dogs & cats, to raise the protien level of that food. There was compelling evidence of this practice in these posts by (apparently) very creditibly scientist.
Any of the 'oldtimers' here remember this thread? (It was after all several years ago) Can anyone shed any light on this? Since I celebrated the 2nd anniversary of my 36th biththday last Nov., my recall is not what it once was. :-)
Thanks, Art

Thanks for your help, but this is not the thread I was referring to. It was much earlier as I remember, I believe it was even before Lee took over this board.
What really stood out in my mind (then as now) was the several posts about the using the bodys of euthanized dogs & cats to raise the protein level of the pet food
At the time, I was buying/selling/picking up & delivering airplanes and spent much less time 'surfing' on the computer. Most of my computer time then was for business use, so I never printed or bookmarked this thread. I have more time now, so I will try to retrieve this info, if it is still available.

OH Baloney!
Where is the documentation, what plant is it? What brand?
Here we go again.
Lots of the Yuppie , High priced feed are the ones that have been recalled for whatever.
I worked in a office downwind from Oscar Myer in Wisconsin. Worry more about what you eat then the dogs which are descendants of wolves.
Have some Pink Slime at Ronalds Steakhouse, Is it really gone???

So....whether it's made with dead dogs and cats, what bothers me most is a good chunk (Pun intended) comes from China, even though the company might still have the headquarters here in the states.
Want to give your dog a raw hide to chew?...Look at the label...from Hondouras, (sp) Mexico or China.
Speaking of which, I've got to get around and head to town to get some dog food at the "Natural" dog food place. Made here and without a bunch of fillers. (I check the labels) What's in it, and where from....

Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor
type in your food, see what your feeding your pet.
I can honestly say that feeding our dogs high end food has dramatically changed our dogs health. Not one question in my mind, I won't go into specifics, but if you want a few stories I'll explain.
Just keep in mind with the better food, you need to feed them less!!!

I don't know, my dog licks her own butt though.
She also will eat the dead fish heads the Heron leave on the lakeshore. Maggots? She doesn't mind maggots.
And all these survival shows teach us that eating bugs, maggots, worms etc. is actually good protein.
There's a lot of things that are okay or even very good for us and our dogs that don't sound conventional or look real appetizing. I try to supply my lab with a healthy dry food and limit the amount of people food she gets (funny that it's good enough for me but I don't let her eat it huh? ).
But I get frustrated when the game keeps changing! First one food is good, then it's not. Sure a bag says made with chicken, but I never see what it is that they call 'chicken'. Beaks are chicken! So are feet. I can promise you they ARE NOT putting fresh skinless chicken breast in your dog food.
So I'm torn. I used what my last breeder recommended which was Ukanuba Large Breed Puppy Chow until Abby was 18 months, then the vet told me to switch to a different brand more suited to her sofa lounging lifestyle, so I did.
It's hard to not share the occasional deer sausage with her and she gets a Milkbone at least every other day. She also likes finishing a cereal bowl with milk in it.
I'd like to do what's right for her, but there's so much hype to hack through before anyone really knows what is good or bad.

My dane is on a raw diet. No junk in and no junk out. Her bm's went from the size of a purse dog to the size of a 'coon ****. She is healthy and happy. All of my future K9s will follow suit.
Dyes, bi-products, preservatives, flavorings, fillers and the like are ok for human consumption but why on earth would you poison your best friend?

No store bought food for ours at all.
Been down that sad road already.
Melamine in China produced and supplied ingredients a big reason of late.
No control over what's actually in anything you buy,,you can't tell by reading the lable.
Easy enough to make them food.

One of my dogs eats cat poo every chance she gets. She doesn't get to bitch about pedigree.
