Default Gun Free zones

How can this possibly be, a shooting at a gunfree zone college in Houston, surely there must be some kind of mistake, are they saying the laws don't work? Oh my, someone should contact our legislators and inform them.

They should name them Crime Free Zones so they can make it even more illegal to break the law there.

Lone Star College (formally known as North Harris Montgomery County Community College) has ALWAYS been gun free...even for cadets that attended their police academy (I graduated from it in the early 90's). However, the campus, like many other colleges, has its own police force plus a very large number of police instructors and LEO's attending continuing education. Frankly, I'm suprised that the situation got as far as it did.

So who are those signs(gun free/ drug free) supposed to impress? Killers? Drug dealers?

The gun free zones are a sad situation that we currently have to live with. It has had a personal impact on me so let me explain. I was elected to, and served for roughly a dozen years on the Board of Trustees and as the Chairman of the Board of one of the largest institutions of higher education in Texas (another multicampus Community College much like Harris Co. CC). Following my retirement from private practice I taught in a professional school for about 10 years in basic sciences and in the patient clinic. Earlier in my career I volunteered as a tutor and role model for a local elementary school. So my involvement in, and love of education at all levels is deeply held. I count those years in administration and with the students to be some of the most rewarding of my career.

Sadly, I no longer electively go on any campus. I have made the decision to not place myself in a gun free zone if I can avoid it. In most instances, I am able to fulfill that promise to myself. As an example, I declined invitations to attend a Christmas luncheon this past year and I have met with fellow colleagues in off campus sites when we get together. I put that personal decision in the same category that makes me wear a seat belt and look before I cross the street. I know that the likelihood of a personal disaster in those events may be slim, however, it is a decision that I have control of and it adds to my comfort level--but it saddens me.

The State Legislature is again in session and it is my understanding that bills will be presented to return the decision either to open or to close the various campuses to firearms to local control.

Bob

Bob, let me thank you for your service to the higher education of our great state, and thank you for taking a stand.

I think all the "Gun Free Zones" signs should be changed by law to represent what the truly are.

"Easy Target Zones, Delayed Response"

Default Gun Free Zones???

Gun Free Zones? More like "Fools Paradise" or "Brain Free Zones" or even "People Free Zones Including The Loony that Shot Everyone and Offed Himself as Well"!

I heard an interesting story last week that all the mass shootings in the last 10 years where more than four people have been killed all occured in gun free zones, except one. The only exception is the shopping center shooting in Arizona where Congresswoman Gifford was shot. Seems that should open someone's eyes.

Bob,
I remember a couple of teachers who made a big difference in my life by pushing me to bring out my potential. My biggest regret is I never returned to that school in time to say how much they meant to me. So for those who never took the time to say it to you: Thanks

We should be allowed to carry a gun anywhere that someone could commit a crime or endanger the life of another. In other words we should be allowed to carry a gun EVERY where. The very term "gun free zone" is offensive and encourages crime in those areas with out the criminal having to worry about it.

This is a simple concept. Why is it so hard for some people to understand?

I think they should just pass a law to make it illegal to break the law. That would stop those criminals in their tracks!
