Smith & Wesson® Withdraws from Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show®

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 22, 2013) --- Smith & Wesson, a U.S. based leader in firearm manufacturing and design, today announced that the Company will not attend nor will it support or participate in the 2013 Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. James Debney, President and CEO of Smith & Wesson, said, “As a market leader in the firearm industry and an iconic brand that spans 160 years of American history, we believe it is important to make our position perfectly clear: We support the Second Amendment and the rights of our law-abiding customers to purchase these and all legal firearms. Therefore, we are unable to support any organization or event that prohibits legal firearms, or otherwise restricts a citizen's lawful and constitutional rights.”

I completely support S&W in this move. Good for them for standing up for the Second Amendment and Gun Owners. We need more companies to stand up and let the public know where they stand.

Great job S&W!

So many of us can remember when they didn't......good to see that move, of course they are owned by entirely different folks.

Cabelas pulled the plug too. The company that runs that show is owned by a British company. I guess those are the same Brits that are used to raising the white flag when ever the anti gunner press puts pressure on them. What the heck is a foreign company doing running a gun show anyway? I guess that's out the question in their own country. Might as well turn your guns in now ol' chap and save yourself some time just like you did over there.

This is really S&W putting their money where their mouth is. Last week at the SHOT Show they release a bunch of new handguns, M&Ps and the like which if they had chosen to, would have made a wonderful display minus their M&P15 collection. They choose to forgo that marketing opportunity in order to stand up for what is right.

Again I say - Way to go S&W!

I read at another site (not gun site) but cannot confirm it that over 150 vendors have pulled out of that show!

This is the only email address that I could see that may be applicable, so I sent along my thanks.

[email protected]

Does anyone know if there is someone specific in the company we should address our thanks to?

It would make a great statement if it had to be cancelled for lack of exhibitors, all withdrawing for the same reason.

Hoo-Ah! S&W! It's about time we stood our ground.
These liberal politically correct idiots would destroy that which allows them to be liberal. They have no concept of Liberty, or the cost there-of.
Don't just hold your ground, My Brothers. Stand and Fight, lest we loose the Nation!

Email for investor relations : [email protected]
Might get more attention there than a general email box.

I'm in Northern Virginia and we've decided not to attend this year.
Besides, we have a gun show in Feb & Mar so I need to save some cash!

Is anyone else thinking next years S.H.O.T. Show may be severely impacted by Reeds ill-conceived decision to ban the display of modern sporting rifles at the E.S.O.S.?

Lots of vendors big and small are pulling out from the Harrisburg show , which is held at the state-owned Farm Show Complex.

Good for them.

I never go because even though it's a publicly owned venue , they charge $8 for parking!

Thumbs up

We can learn from this too, I've seen threads lately that promote giving in "just a little" to "common sense bla' bla' bla'..."

To hell with that.

Pick a side, there's only two.

As things progress gun buyers may want to pressure manufacturers to move out of states that have repressive gun laws. Remington in New York state comes to mind. Why should states that have these restrictions on law abiding citizens reap economic benefit from the products they seek to ban?

Outstanding. Way to go S&W. I know a few fellow shooters that are not attending. I haven't been there in years. Too many campers and boats for me.

I hope half the building is empty. Think Reed will catch on ??

Dear Smith and Wesson,

Thank you for listening and deciding not to support the ESOS.

You have really made a loyal customer happy and I personally will buy more of your new products because of this upstanding decision.

God Bless S&W and God Bless America. United we stand.

DG

P.S. If you really want to boost sales and make another statement please consider getting rid of that stupid Internal Lock.

If all manufacturers stand together, the show will be forced to change its stand. Or close up.

Good for them. I live in New York and it's good to see the big guys standing up for what they believe in. We are all in for a fight.

The attitude of S&W, Ruger and others can be contagious. These show promoters better make up their minds what side of the fence they are on.

I guess that's out the question in their own country. Might as well turn your guns in now ol' chap and save yourself some time just like you did over there.
Interesting you bring this up, because Jim Scoutten (from 'Shooting USA') had this little note in the comment thread of the S&W story on his facebook page:

Jim Scoutten: Let's clear up the S&W History: At the time of the attempted deal with Clinton, S&W was owned by a British company. After that disaster the Brits gave up and sold S&W to the current American owners. The hapless president at the time of the Clinton deal is long gone. Now Reed Exhibitions, putting on the Eastern Sports Show, is a British company. Do we have a pattern here?

If you want to see it for yourself, go to his facebook page and look for a post by him that says "This Just In: Smith & Wesson statement" and check the comments for his post.

Might get more attention there than a general email box.

I'm in Northern Virginia and we've decided not to attend this year.
Besides, we have a gun show in Feb & Mar so I need to save some cash!
Got a response from Liz Sharp @ S&W Investor relations:
Thank you for your correspondence. We appreciate your support.

Very cool. Someone read the email.

True but they use REED as the organizer and promoter just as Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show® does.

Did STAG ARMS, COLT, AND MOSSBERG pull out? If not I will call all three tomorrow and ask if they will also.

KCOG has a very good point. These gun companies in New York, New Jersey, Illinois and California need to move to the south or a least to gun friendly states. There may come a day when it will becomes too expensive to operate and or relocate from those states. Those bunch of losers don't mind taking our gun tax dollars to support their anti-gun agendas. Stop giving them our dollars. I realize you can't just up and move but a little planning and some slick negotiating with a gun friendly state could be quite beneficial.
