EMP blast ?
Most of us keep out guns in a electronic safe. What happens if we get hit from EMP blast from the sun or from a terrorist, that sets off a bomb ? Will we be able to get into our safe ?
That's when we are going to need our guns. Not being able to get to them is really going to suck !!!!

Not knowing a whole lot about emp, i have found out that you most likely won't loose power to simple electronics. Major network grids on the other hand will most likely get fried.
I forget where I read it but the military did a bunch of testing, and it always failed to knock out the electronics in cars.
So I guess there is hope for your safe.

If you're nervous about EMP, ground the safe, but not through the house current, or if you're really ambitious, build a Faraday cage. Unless you have the safe plugged into your house current, it will likely not be affected by EMP. EMP, from what I read, needs an 'antenna' to direct it. Power lines are a good antenna, but, as others have said, relatively low tech items will probably not be effected even if plugged in,

Don't electronic safes have the ability to open with back-up keys in case of power failure or depleted batteries?
You just need to remember where you stash the essential components of your fallback system.

EMP will fry the electronics. Radiation Hardened components are extremely expensive and would not be found in a consumer gun safe.

being made of steel, the safe itself IS a Faraday cage.
the way EMP works is through inductance.
A magnetic field passing through a metal object induces a current in proportion to the strength of the magnetic field.
in the case of EMP .. its a massive electro magnetic field.
the theory goes that if the field is strong enough, the current induced in the wires and PCB traces in your electronics will be large enough to exceed the voltage specifications of most all integrated circuits.
Honestly thats not a whole lot of voltage as most digital CMOS types operate at 5V or 3.3V ... 10V can kill em

Venomballistics,
Thanks, that's good info. So, is what I read correct? If the safe is unplugged, and grounded directly, but not through the house current, will that protect the electronics that control the locking mechanism?

Combination lock here on main safe, battery back up on bedside safe...seems like there is a minority that uses electronic and certainly not a "most use electronic" as you stated.

My own safe has an electronic keypad -- which is getting fairly worn out -- but has a pair of long steel "backup keys" that will open the safe through a pair of keyholes accessible by removing the keypad.
Since a powerful EMP blast will not only knock out all moving vehicles but also destroy the little belt-clip music-machines (IPhones, MP-3 players, ad nauseum) that the hip-crew cannot walk down the street without listening to, I will have PLENTLY of time to access my safe's contents while the outside World is still trying to get the beat back by banging the rocks together.
It's not a big concern.

in theory yes ... you may have a weak point at the key pad though. This is outside the cage, representing an entry point.
cover it with any metal plate and ground that too.
part this, its all you can do

If there is an EMP attack, we'll be worrying about a lot of things besides getting our electronic safes from failing.
http://www.empcommission.org/docs/empc_exec_rpt.pdf
Read a novel based on facts called "One Second After" by WILLIAM R. FORSTCHEN. It details some of the things that we don't often think about .

Some years ago there was a LARGE radar near one of the entrance gates at Ft Bliss. A sign on the road said that electronic ignition equipment on cars might be affected. I never did see any cars stalled on the road, but I don't think they operated that radar much at morning or afternoon rush hours.

Make sure that the hat is screwed down tight, and well grounded, too!

IIRC, EMP is assorbed by an antena at the rate of 10,000 volt per yard (during a medium A-bomb blast). Don't be caught sitting in an aluminum lawn chair! Ivan

Yes -they do not have electronic comp. I wonder what burns out on the newer cars. It may be just the main 30 amp fuse that is near the battery or at the fuse box. R&R the fuse and your good to go. Keep x in your car or just use foil...

No electronics on my safe or my handgun safe. If you are worried about having access to your guns in that situation, at least keep 1 handgun in a push-button mechanical lock handgun safe. There are several good brands available and are reasonable secure if bolted down.

If it bothers you, just get a manual type - key or dialpad (or both).

EMP
What's really awful is we might not be able to watch tv after an EMP blast. No Celebrity Apprentice! I hope Bloomberg is working on this.
