Choice of 3 s@w which one? should I get?
One of my buddies is selling his sisters husbands guns that passed away going on three years. I have a first chance on his guns. There is a 586 its nice a little wear to it, needs some oil real dry like all of them, there is a 357 highway patrolman and a duty gun 38sp I can't see any model # on it. It is a little beat up.. There is a savage 308 99e and a Ithaca featherlight 12 g pump there in nice shape and a marlin 3030 and an old beat up 22. I am not sure what there worth and I don't want to spend a ton of cash on them, I would like to get them redone, the revolvers that is. I have access to the guns if we need any numbers off them. i don't have any revolvers in my collection so I am letting you guys help me out. Thank you!!!!

To me the most interesting are the .357 Highway Patrolman (I assume it is a Model 28) and the Savage 99 in .308. I have a S&W Model 27 .357 and a Model 29 .44 mag, but I would buy a Model 28 if priced right. I also have a 1940 Savage 99 in .300 Savage, but I would buy one in .308, again depending upon the price.

I'd go with the Highway Patrolman. I agree, it's very likely a model 28.

If you are going to "get it redone" then take the beat up 38 service revolver. If you can live with it as-is take the Highway Patrolman.

Condition is everything and it makes a huge difference if it's a pre- 28, a 'no-dash' or a dash 2 or 3
For a beater dash 2 the price could be 3 or 4 bills . . . for a nice pre-28 it could be 8 bills or more; add a few bucks for a 4" barrel over a 6". Original grips in good condition add to the price.
More details would be needed to provide an accurate assessment.

Need more information. Is it a very early one before the model numbers? How much wear and tear? Is it all original? does it have the original box?

All three of those revolvers are nice looking. If you could swing it, I would get all three. If not, I would go for the 586 first, then the M & P.

I'd go with the Highway Patrolman first, then if I could swing it, get the M&P (everbody needs an M&P). If I still had some dough, I'd try for the 99.
Nothing wrong with a 586 - I'm just not a fan of the L.

I agree. Go with the HP.
$350 each is low, but $400-450 each is more fair.

I would go for the HP. I cannot tell if it is a pinned barrel from the pic, but if it is I would go $400. I believe the 4" guns are worth a bit more. If you can swing it and it is nice, I would buy the Savage also.

An offer of $1000 for "all" of the them (rifles and revolvers) is what I would do.
Of the revolvers I would go withe the M586 1st, and then the M28. The M10 (duty gun) is the least desirable to me (there were a gizillion of them made) and if you wanted one you could always find one later.

Sometimes, buying them in a group package is the way to go. Later, you can recoup some of your money if there are seome you decide you don't want. I've done this in the past, and got a collection of firearms for about the price of one. Never hurts to ask for a price for them all.

Get both the 586 or the M28 HP ... both will probably sit in your safe bec both are basically too big to carry on your hip. But, both are just well made examples of quality S&W and fun to shoot.
In San Jose, Kalif, used retail (gun store) for the 586 in really good condition w/box is about $600 - $650 in today's environment. The M28-2 HP in really good condition is $700 or a little more. Condition is key.
If I only bought one it would be the 586 if that is no dash or -1, with box, in really good to excellent condition.

Personally, if the Highway Patrolman is a 4 screw (screw in front of the trigger guard) or a *gasp* 5 screw (screw on the r/h side plate, just under the rear sight & screw on front of trigger guard) I would definitely go with these first. (especialy a 5 screw.)
If it's a 3 screw i.e. None of the above screws installed. I would go with the 586 in the box. They are much harder to find than the 686's. (stainless version) If value is your largest concern, I think that if the HP is a 5 screw, if that is what that one is, would be 'a home run'.

You never said what you plan to do with them but no matter what you did very well. I'm sure she was pleased with 750 in her hands.
Fair on both sides I believe.

I made my above post After you had posted that you had bought both the 586 & the HP.
Ya' done Really great!! Very good way to start a revolver collection, and at that price, you hit 'a home run'. Congratulations, I would have jumped on that in a heartbeat.
BTW is the HP a 3,4 or 5 screw? Just wondering if you did "Really Great" or "Unbelievable".

Looking forward to pictures.

I'm real interested in more info on the HP. The grips look to be made between 1970ish and 1982ish and look to be in great shape. , If they are original to the gun would make it a 28-2.

Good deal. In Kalifornistan either one would sell intantly at $500+ and are usually marked around $600-ish depending on condition.
As for shooting, I do believe you are going to be delighted with both. A lot of Highway Patrolman fans around here. If you're lucky HandEjector might pM you the meaning of the mysterious markings on the barrel.

Congratulations! Look inside the cylinder crane on the frame and there should be stamped model numbers and serial numbers. The model numbers will tell you exactly what you have, and if you list the first four or five letters and numbers in the serial number here someone can help with an approximate manufacture date. Better pictures and closeups of any stamping under the grips could tell if there has been any factory rework (stars, dates, etc.).
You're gonna love them!

Late last week I looked at a Model 28 and the asking was $800. It was a 6" in real nice shape, but not mint.
