Brick of .22 Ammo
Hi:
I keep reading "A Brick Of .22 LR" ?
Is a "Brick" a carton containing 10 boxes of 50 rounds each= 500 rounds as in my era?

If of regular .22LR ammo, I would say so.
If .22 mag, then I'd say only 100 rounds per brick.

Yes, ten 50-round boxes is a brick.
I've seen many people, on various boards, refer to 350 to 550 round "bulk packs" as bricks. They are wrong.
There are 50 rounds to a box, ten boxes to a brick, and ten bricks to a case. If they are packed any other way (CCI 100-packs, for instance), they aren't bricks.

Nope. Common usage. Generally we will indicate the quantity when referring to a bulk pack, ie "550 rd brick." I often call them "bulk packs" implying they are loose boxed ammo as opposed to the nifty little 50 packs in the "bricks" of yore but most of us know what the other's talkin' about. Sometimes I call 'em bricks. Shorter than "bulk pack." I actually saw two of the old skool 10x50rd bricks of Rem Goldens in my local Turner's a couple weeks ago. Don't see them very often 'round here.

This is what I would go with.
"Bulk Pack" and "Milk Carton" is what I've always heard used for the more modern bulk packs.
Brick packaging goes back......what? A hundred years or more?
Here's some pics of some contract ammo. I've bought many cases of commercial ammp packed exactly the same-
22 Ball

I asked the brick: "Brick what would you like to be?"
The brick said: "I like an arch."
I said; "but I can easily put a concrete lintel over an opening and do it faster and for less money. What do you say to that, brick?"
The brick replied; "I like an arch."

I have not seen a .22 brick in years. All I see is 500 bulk "slush boxes" They seem a little dangerous packed that way.

I still see "bricks" all the time. Aguila is sole in bricks. Remington Target is sold in bricks, Ely is sold in bricks, Fiocchi is sold in bricks, and I am sure there are lots more.

My cousin had a truck load of bricks delivered to his house a few days ago. I could not find (1) .22 round amongst them.

I went to a small one day only gunshow early this morning and the 'bricks & milk cartons' of .22 ammo were priced anywhere from $65 to $95.
Some of it was actually finding buyers.
I bought a round ball mould I really didn't need and some #8 shot at a very good price. Needed that..
A project Parker,,almost.
Still can't get over the 22 ammo prices..

From left to right.
50 Box - 500 Brick - 5,000 Case
I'm going to start counting just to make sure.
One 100-pack. Five 100-packs.
Let's try to figure out what this thing likes to shoot box.

When I was a kid 500 was a carton and 5000 was a case. I was grown before I ever heard one called a brick. There are 500 shotgun shells to a case. I don't know those 250 round boxes of shells is called. Larry

250 rd boxes of shot shells are(were?) called a 'flat' commonly.
But even that term is giving way to the 250rd box being called a 'case' of shotshells now.
The manufacturers and retailers are selling the shells by the 250rd/ 10bx 'case'.
The old 500rd case isn't packaged much if at all anymore.
Too heavy for the urban homesteaders to lift off the Gander Mtn shelf I guess.

Brick = 10 boxes of 50
Bulk Pack = 350, 550, or whatever in one box
Six Pack = 6-12 oz. cans
Eighteen Pack = 18-12 oz. cans
Case = 24-12 oz. cans
20 Pack means the beer company wants to see how many folks will do math to get a better deal.

I generally agree with both usages. While 500 packs or 10 boxes of 50 have been called "bricks" for many, many years, ammo makers like Federal market 550rd "bulk packs" or "value packs" with the incentive to the customer that you're getting a "brick" with 50 free rounds.
In my experience, I see the term brick commonly used in reference to 500 or 550 packs interchangeably. Any of the other quantities are referred to as something else (like the goofy 350 or 325 round packs meant to fool casual buyers into thinking prices havent changed much becuse this packaging costs as much as 500 packs used to cost 8 years ago.)

Reason one doesn't see bricks much any more is that the retailers break them down and sell them by the box-make more money that way. They aren't gonna sell you a brick for less than 10 boxes. Me personally, I like the bricks-why-who cares I'm over 50 so I don't have ot give any reason. I remember Federal Lightning for 9.99 a brick-I think I still have some somewhere. Bricks just seem to being more order to the world-plus it's easier to keep track of how many you have left. Downside is that their carbon footprint is bigger due to the increased packing material used. Maybe that's another reason I like them better
Probably the reason they went to bulk is that the guy who used to fill the little boxes died and nobody wanted to learn the craft of putting the cartridges in one up, one down.........

Actually, union rules say you need one employee to put one up and second employee to put one down, third employee to apply the box. Government says "up guy" "down guy" and "box guy" must be from different ethnic origins.

My dad was a bricklayer for 40 years.
I mixed and hauled a lot of mud, brick and block for 'em growing up.
Man did I love watching my dad lay brick.

If you want to check quantities, try a digital scale and do it by weight. You could save a lot of time counting.

Yes, these are commonly called bricks.
I do take issue with calling a 50 round package a box. We're a victim of downsizing and it's not a recent phenomenon.
Back in the good old days when the .22 rimfire was taking off, a box contained 100 rounds. A 50 round package was known as a 1/2 box.

Thanks for the pic s7wchad....brings back alot of good memories. The local coast to coast hardware store always carried the Imperial.
The only way to buy beer is by the box...30 cans. Can't be makin a run after one had a couple.
