This Day in History - What Happened This Day in History?
I thought we could have a little fun with some factoids on what special things happened on today's date years ago.
I'll start:
On February 15, 1969 Sly & The Family Stone had the number one hit, "Everyday People."
February 15, 1967, 13 US helicopters were shot down in Vietnam...my uncle was one of those lost.
Ok folks, have at it.

Gun shops should not sell guns to women on Feb 15th. Some dumb slob shouldn't get shot just because he bungled Valentine's.

Welllll.....our case is a LITTLE different, since the country aided and abetted terrorists, and our tactics have not been to burn the country to the ground like the Commies did......but we have not paid attention to the reality on the ground that Afghanistan is a post WWII construct and never really has had a centralized government, or decentralized government for that matter. It is time to come home.

Actually, the Ides of February fall on the 13th. The Ides always fall exactly eight days after the Nones, which fall on the fifth for eight months out of 12. Keep track this way:
March, July October, May,
The Nones are on the seventh day.
This is deadly important and serious stuff, folks!
BTW, the word "Nones" (rhymes with "bones") is connected the number nine. What's up with that? I guess if you are the Romans, you count the way you want to and everybody else falls in line if they know what's good for them.
They weren't complete calendar jerks, though. The Kalends (whence "Calendar") always fall on the first of the month. Any month. No matter how many days it has in it.

Who broke the color line for the last all white pre-expansion team in major league ball, and when did he do it?
Just to make a passing nod to the original focus of this thread, this event did not occur in February, and not on the 15th -- Ides or not.

The Boston Red Sox were the last major league team to integrate, due to the resistance of owner Tom Yawkey.
When integration did come, new General Manager Bucky Harris promoted Pumpsie Green from Boston's AAA farm club in July 1959, but Green did not become a regular player. Earl Wilson began as a regular in the Red Sox' rotation beginning 1962.
this, also, was the team that gave away george herman ruth, jr.

Let me think: I think I was on a pair of snow shoes or riding a snowmobile in Bear Valley, Ca. putting in telephones. Worst winter for snow fall in 60 years. About 25 feet on the valley floor & 100 ft. at Mt. Reba.
