Default Snow and road conditions

Well it seems as though MODOT dropped the ball again. Four major highways closed down in and around St. Louis. The same thing happened last year when we got 2" snow. MODOT spokespeople were just on tv defending themselves by saying they told everybody not to go to work today! Are you kidding me! The storm hit the city at 11am. I'm pretty sure most people are at work by then. Sorry but I'm at work unless I can't get out of my driveway in my 4wd truck. My boss would be a little concerned about my sanity if I called off before it even started snowing. The news is reporting that some highways may still be closed in the morning. We got on average 6" of snow from 11am to about 6pm. Is 6" of snow enough to shut down your cities?

Default Ice

Hi 158 Grn,
I'm 55-60 miles south and we have quite a bit of ice.
It looks like everything came down hard and fast.
Plow came by here every 20 minutes to 45 minutes and it was bad again minutes after they passed.
It looks bad as far west as KC on the news.
I was all over yesterday and there was a lot of prep work being done.
I'd say a bad storm at a bad time.
It is a mess and rush hour had vehicles stuck in the way of the plows.
There were still light flurries out here at 8:00.
Good luck in the morning.
Mike

Six inches of snow won't even start the schools late around here.

They were originally saying ice here but we got almost all snow. There was a little sleet on the back end of it. Hopefully you still have power. Best of luck if you need to get out and about. Stay safe

I'm in Columbia, MO. Born & raised in Eastern Montana. Lived in North Dakota for 4 years. They called off work today. Woohoo! Went to the grocery store yesterday. Never got out of my pajamas today! Comfy at home. So what did I do? Sorted through the rest of my 40 lbs. of 45 ACP brass for small/large primer. Set up my 38/357 dies on my new Dillon RL550B. Ready to crank out ammo now. Joined NRA lifetime. Took a hour nap in the afternoon. Was a good day. Now I need to do some shoveling tomorrow morning.

Yep, here 6" would close things for a month. Here in the long horn state a 1/2" will close everything and then some. They start running to the stores to buy milk, water, canned goods, etc. because we might not get out til next week! They actually put plow blades on the front of the highway trucks and send them out to plow!

I get your frustration but heck, stay up late, have a pizza, watch TV and sleep in. Surely the boss will understand the weather people said it would be a late start to the AM.

Here in the Carolinas any sign of snow and we get off work early. People down here are the worst drivers in snow condition too.

Sir, in Denver a 6-inch snow will slow people's commutes down, but it's not enough to close anything. A foot or more might, depending. In '03, we got a really good storm here: 3 feet of snow at our house, 4 feet at my office. That shut things down for about a week.

When I was growing up in Minnesota and Wisconsin, snow days were few and far between.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

HAH! You should see them when it snows here. Even funnier was the one night they had what the weather guy called fog. My late wife was from SoCal and I'm from England and we just laughed. Fog?? It barely qualified as a heavy mist.

I work in St. Louis. Traffic was very light going to work in the AM. I let my employees go at 4. All drive company 2 WD vans. All made it home OK. The side roads were terrible, more city or county than MoDot. It took me 30 minutes to get to I 70 and there was very little traffic on it, the roads were pretty clean heading west into St. Charles County. I drive a 4 WD Explorer and had no issues. Every where you looked there were stuck cars, most of them were newer low to the ground front wheel drive ones with wider tires. They were up to their belly in the snow and had the wrong tires on for traction.

Growing up we had lots of snow, folks had 2 snow tires mounted and put them on in the winter. Cars were heavier and sat higher. Dad also kept chains on the farm truck, we would go up and down the mountain in it and use the station wagon on in to town. There would be a load of wood in the 2 WD pickup for weight. Our farm was at the top of a mountain. Dad drove, Mom sat in the middle holding my sister and I was on the outside with my brother in my lap. Geez, I swear it was all normal then, but in looking back Dad hit the mountain on the dead run, snow flying, tires spinning and throwing more snow as Dad tried to set some kind of land speed record to keep momentum going. If you've ever seen a picture of a sand dragster attacking a steep sand dune you sort of have the picture. The truck cab had 3 noises only on the trips up hill, first there was 4 folks taking a deep breath, 2nd there was Dad filling the cab with many bad words and the last sound was 4 folks exhaling at the top.

I went to school in the 50's and 60's. I don't remember many snow days we had, very, very few, if your bus did not make it you were marked absent....

Just west of Milwaukee, WI... It would take a lot to get our city to shut down. We had 8" of heavy snow and nobody seemed to really care. About half our city drives 4x4 trucks or SUV's, the other half drive 2wd Civics, Grand Prix's, etc. Only issue was someone hitting a stop light. Knocked down the pole and barely even a scratch on his lifted 4x4. Plows run 24/7 and the Schools did not even have a delay.

158grain, relax a little, enjoy the pretty white stuff, stay warm with your heater and think how much smarter you are for having 4 wheel drive then those fools who don't.

For those of you who live in the north or mountains, you are used to the snow and have the equipment to handle it, we don't. I've been to Minneapolis in the winter they do a bang up job of snow removal. People know how to drive on snow and ice, we don't as a rule. But we do know how to handle the snow run off when it gets here in the spring, mostly.

My sister called Mom yesterday from her home in St. Louis. Mom asked what all the cars honking was about. "They are trying to plow the streets and the cars are honking for them to get out of the way." After all the street is clear where they are driving.

One cool thing! My wife and I heard a clatter about 11:00 am. Looked outside and our next door neighbor was shoveling our walk from the car all the way to our steps. Josh looks like a skin head but I did him a favor once and he's continually paying me back. Kinda makes me feel better for the country!

Well, where I was FROM, nope, a couple inches never slowed much down (MN). From where I live NOW (GA), yup, two-inches paralyzes all of GA and its roadways. Heck, they start schools late or close them with an inch or less.

If the wind hits 30mph and the thermometer hits -10, 6" of snow might be a 2 hr late start, buses on plowed roads only. But I live on the prairie. 6" of snow can equal a 6' drift.

I was in Ohio years ago with a group on MN residents. The temp was about 30º. We got off the plan carrying our coats. People seemed to think it was cold. A 2" snowfall shut down the state. Culture shock set in.

On the second weekend of Feb we got a Blizzard up here.

On the third weekend of Feb we got 6-8 inches up here.

On the fourth weekend of Feb they predict snow but not telling how much up here.

I'm getting a good workout with my trusty shovel up here.

Really kind of nice when we 6"+ of snow in Spokane - that fills in the pot holes until things thaw back out. City doesn't even start the plows til there's 6" on the ground! I'm not sure, but I think there are only 17 people here that don't own a 4X4 or have AWD.

We got about six inches of snow. It did close the schools and such down. Driving last night was insanity (coming home from work). They had the roads mostly opened up this morning, but the driveway was buried too deep to get my car out!
