Need Savage 1907 help
Picked up one of these neat little pistols the other day in 32 ACP, but the front sight is broken off. Can one of you please give me the height of the front sight from the slide. Ordered a sight blank from Numrich and I need this information to make a new one.
thanks

I have one, but it is kinda burried. I'll try to get it out in a reasonable time for you.

Thanks forindooruseonly I really appreciate the information. I was figuring about .125 so I was sort of close. Thanks again for giving me the correct measurement. By the way if that is your pistol in the picture, what a beauty!!
regards

No problem! I really dig these old automatics - they're stylish little guns. Mine is from 1919, and due to wartime shortages, Savage experimented with alternative finishes to traditional blueing and the result is that matte finish in the pic. I'm still looking for a minty high polished blued version.

You don't see a lot of Savages today. My uncle had a M-1917 when I was a kid. He was shocked to find that I'd packed it on a shopping trip in downtown Tulsa when I was 13. No CCW law in place then, either, not that a teen would have gotten a license, if there had been. But I felt better with a gun, especially considering that I knew that some thugs had beaten him up recently on his own front porch. He said he never discovered why.
Uncle had several .32's. I never knew why he didn't opt for something bigger. I got my first handgun that year, a Webley converted to .45ACP. I was into British Empire stuff, and I wanted a gun that would inform someone when I shot them. I wasn't too sure that a .32 would do that effectively. (I'd been reading Elmer Keith.)
Uncle also read, "Playboy", and it was at his place that I first saw girls with staples in their navels. Carol Eden was the first Playmate that I saw, if any of you guys recall her. My parents would have been horrified that I'd seen that. But I enjoyed summer trips to visit Uncle F.
BTW, I think Portugal issued some Savage .32's to their military. Don't think they saw any other official use. Didn't Bat Masterson do some ads for them?

garra,
I currently have 2 1907 .32s. The sights measure .137 on one and .138 on the other.
Texas Star,
Can't say anything about Portugal, but France ordered 1907s during WW I. The only difference I know about them is they were provided with a lanyard loop. I had one that had a finish that resembled gray Parkerizing. I always wondered if it was a re-finish or original for the military contract.

Yeah, Bat Masterson did a number of ads for them. Their slogan was "Ten Shots Quick!" - they also ran ads with a distressed young female gunning down a lecherous invader.
Sounds like you had a colorful uncle, lol. Tulsa can be a rough place - I'm native to those parts.
I remeasured mine after reading Alk's post, mine is definitely .130 - I'd go with the larger numbers from his examples just because it's easier to take away metal than to add it.

Here's my French Savage, complete with lanyard loop and original holster. One of the magazines is a later purchase, by me.....Ouch! It cost almost as much as the gun. Also, I once broke the firing pin by dry firing it. Replacing it involved getting a very energetic 2 inch long coil spring into about a 3/4 inch slot. It was not fun.
Incidently, it has long been rumored that the French contract Savages were originally destined for Portugal, but were diverted because of the greater need by France at that time.

Wow! You guys have some great examples. Probably need ten of mine to get up enough original finish for one of yours!
I do have one other .32 ACP pistol with a higher capacity than the Savage, though.
(sorry...don't have any pics of my Savage and I wanted to post SOMETHING)

Rob-
I encountered one of those Czech Skorpions in a Modesty Blaise novel. Haven't seen one in awhile.

This is a semi-auto built from a demilled parts kit and a new semi- receiver. Did it myself and wrote it up on Weaponeer.net (a great home-gunbuilder forum). It's a hoot.
