Do you have Cell phone + Land Line or just Cell Phone?
Wife and I are considering dropping our land line phone to save $ and just have the cell phone. Most all of the calls are 1-800 sales calls anyway. Have any of you dropped your land line? (I guess that's what you call it).
The only negitive thing I can think of is when the cell tower gets over loaded with calls and the thing locks up so nobody can call or something like that happens. I know this from when we had a large earthquake about 10 years ago and everyone was calling everyone else and it was impossible to make a cell call but you could with the land line. But that was 10 years ago and maybe this wouldn't happen again.

Dropped my land line in favor of a cell phone only years ago, probably about 2003. Never looked back, never missed it.

I'd drop my land line in a heart beat, but the only way I can get DSL here is through the phone company, so....

A few years ago we had a thunderstorm and lightning struck the house. Fried out our cordless phone for the landline. I took that as a sign from God we were supposed to get rid of it.
It's been 4 or 5 years, and I don't miss it at all.

I know a guy who works for AT&Tand he said all house phones will become cellular or over the air. A block of house phones will have one small community antenna. Much cheaper for the phone company. No underground or overhead phone lines to lay or to maintain.

I still have both, a land line and cell phone. I've experienced to many Cell phone overload issues and was unable to get a call out. I may be old fashioned, but I refuse to be without a way to make an emergency call if needed.

Over the space of about 5 years my basic home phone from ATT (no long distance included) went from $25 to $50. So last year I dropped the "land line" and just retained DSL from ATT. Then the introductory offer on the DSL went to $43 from $25. ATT would not budge from the new charge and re-up me on the $25 introductory offer on DSL. So 2 months ago I Dropped basic ATT DSL and went for faster ATT Uverse internet for $25 a month on yet another introductory offer. There's no dial tone now on the 2 wire, so without testing it I'm assuming stuff like "magic jack" wont work. You can still make free calls using Google Gmail, but you need Chrome. So I've got Chrome on one computer so that if I misplace my cell I can call it and find it using Gmail caller.

I still have my land lines due to small children. I want them to be able to call 911 if needed and not have to search for my cell. I have a hard enough time keeping them away from my smartphone anyway! They can call their friends on the land line.

I've got both.
A cell phone for those that know me to call me on - and -
A landline for my DSL and depending on how bored I am to give me telemarketers that ignore the do not call list to hang up on or mess with their minds. In the winter it's my only stress relief.

Cell only. Commicast keeps trying to get me on their cable/internet/phone 'triple-play' deal as they call it.

I SORT of have both. I have my cell and that I use for almost everything I need to do EXCEPT for things that I don't want them calling me. So I have the MagicJack and it works great (with a good computer and fast line). I typically only use it for the answering machine part of it. I get a notification email when it gets a message and so I can listen to the attached .wav file.
There are places I just don't want to have my cell phone so I give out my MagicJack number (costs about $20 or $30 per year).

My cell phone is a phone, period. I don't play games on it, access the internet, transmit pictures, or any of that. It's a basic little flip model that I keep primarily for emergencies when I'm out. I've reached the age where if you fall you can break something important, like a hip. I won't use it when I'm driving, but will tell a caller I'll call back. One thing I did learn was to take the precaution, when there was a severe weather warning, to forward my land line to the cell in case the hard-wired service went out.
Now I'm thinking of changing carriers to AT&T on their introductory rate, and when they attempt to hose me after a year, switch back to the introductory rate with my present company. Should be able to keep that going for a while...

My power went out a couple of times, but the landline phone still worked. I'm keeping it as long as I can. I get better reception over it than I do on my walkaround chargeable phones and the cellphone, too.
And it doesn't need battery charging.

Just got new iPhones that work flawlessly. Two between us. Have a land line too. We have a 6 cordless handset system that is convenient around the house, shed and garage though. Probably will keep the land line for a while longer. Also a stand alone Fax that needs it.

When our ISP began offering stand-alone DSL (no land line requirement) several years ago, we dropped the land line. We never used it for anything other than wrong numbers and telemarketers, anyway.
We thought we were going to have to give up our home alarm system, but our provider said they had a cellular option, so we went with that. It works extremely well.
I haven't missed the land line at all. About once a year, we need to send a fax, and then I go to town and pay to send one...but cost of doing that is certainly less than maintaining a land line year around. There's probably a way to send a fax via our computer and DSL, but I'm not savvy enough to know how to do that...my laptop doesn't have a paper slot.

We 86ed our landline a couple years back. I found the only calls we got were from banks and my mother-in-law and always at dinner. Needless to say it was a no-brainer to drop it.
It was a necessary evil and priceless when my kids were small and before they had their own cell phones. But now? Absolutely useless!

I am not sure that the assumption that a landline will work in emergencies is correct. For what it's worth, in Tokyo, when the big quake hit in Match 2011, both landlines and cell phones jammed up. What worked was the Internet, and I was able to confirm via email that the kids and wife, all in different locations, were okay.
I guess the main difference is a landline will work even if the electricity is out, but, then again, if you have charged up batteries in your cell phones, what's the difference, really?
I have been considering getting a solar charger for the cell phones/smart phones, just in case.

I have ATT Uverse which means my land line is Voip, which I do not trust. No matter what ATT promised me my phones go down when the power fails, probably a bad backup battery. So we also have 2 cell phones.

I have not had a land line in over 15 years.
Here is a tip. When you cannot make a call on a cell phone, many times you can still send a text message...

I like having a land line
I like a land line as a 'home base', but we all have cellphones. I only use my cell phone to contact family while I'm on the road.

Our land line has been off for a few years. My flip phone died a couple of weeks ago and I had to use an older backup, really old. So...
Last week we got two smart phones for free with a new contract, could't get a suitable replacement flippy.
All I can say is I should have done it sooner. I'm hard headed.
Blinking Cool.
I'm not good with new tech. but found this thing easy so far.

a squirrel in the attic chewed through the phone line (land line) so we shut it off (stopped paying the bill) and use only our cell phones. All we were getting was telemarketing calls so we haven't missed a thing.

Nice to have the old cash around for quality products.
iPad, iMac, Airport Extreme, iPod.
Don't own a iPhone yet , but the niece is putting lots of pressure on me.
Still have a land line and basic cell phone.

I got rid of the cell phone as it became a constant interruption and kept the landline as it was the lowest cost option.

We have both, but if I could, I'd get rid of the land line. We get that as a bundle with our Internet and TV, so it wouldn't save any money dropping it. I rarely use it and it's relegated to people I don't necessarily want to talk to like telemarketers, pollsters, and my mother in law.
The only real advantage is that if I call 9-1-1 from my land line, it goes to my local police. If I call from my cell phone it goes to the State Police headquarters and then they transfer it to my local PD. At some point that will change, but it was supposed to be done a couple of years ago and still isn't.

Put the pressure on your carrier. If you've been with them for some time and especially if your contract is up they'll play. My wife's a good negotiator. They wanted a few to many bucks for them.

I also have a land line and cell phone.
The only negative with the land line, a storm can put you out of business easily, downed line.
Last month 4 days without service, glad I had the cell phone, never know when an emergency will show up.

both...i keep the landline because i have an 11 yr old and a 3 year old. 911 through a cell cannot get the exact location, it goes through a different service has an extra person to be notified between our call and the police/fire/ambulance. the extra 20 a month or so is worth it for me for those reasons.

Cell, land, and satellite, tin cans & twine, telegraph key, firewood for smoke, small hammer for railroad tracks, semaphore flags, Aldis lamp, etc.... One can't be too prepared.

Haven't had a Land Line for almost 10 years. Just use the cell phones now. I have had the cell towers lock up on me, I live in a tourist area and during the summer time and peak tourists times its hard to make cell calls, but mostly this leads to missed calls and voicemails. You get the alerts and voicemails from Tuesday on Wednesday or Thursday.

iPhone. No conventional phone landline but I use Google phone while at my desktop computer. It's a free download with Gmail and all calls are free US and Canada.

I still have land and cell. I have kept the land for a couple reasons. As a Sr Citizen the 911emergency as of yet can't locate a cell phone. When we talk to our children and grandchildren in other states we can both be on different extensions. The speaker phone really works unlike my cell phone which you have to be within 2 ft. to hear. But, I heard there is a home phone that you can put your cell phone into and use as a multi-phone land line. I'm looking for that.

Re: Do you have Cell phone + Land Line or just Cell Phone?
Land and cell. The land line was a package deal from the cable company. Phone, internet, cable. Otherwise you pay individual prices for each

I grew up with a land line, and parents who had cell phones, and after I turned 16 and wrecked my truck (guardrail came out of nowhere!), I ended up with a cell phone of my own. When I moved to my own house 5 1/2 years ago, I never had a land line hooked up. Cell only. I don't miss the land line at all. Tinkered with Google Voice for work purposes, but never saw a good reason to actually use it. And for a SHTF scenario, I have a CB in the Jeep, and a handheld one also.

I live out in the boonies (lower Adirondack Mountain area) of NYS. As of now and for the next few years we have no cell service. FWIW public safety radio is not too good here either.
They just built a few high towers to improve PS (not in service yet) and the town supervisor said they left room to put on 2 cell phone antennas. They will be good as in a few years we will get cell and they phone companies will pay rent.
I’m a year around resident and well used to the phone problem, but as the lake I live on can increase the population by a huge percent during the summer when the camp folks come to roost.
The really bad thing about the no cell service and PS radio problems is if a power failure or break in when the land line phones are out ( or possibly cut) is trying to get help. For that reason most year around folks are well armed and prepared to handle anything that needs handling till LEO/EMS/FIRE can be contacted and arrive.
