Default People that interrupt and/or talk over you.

My dad and my father in law were both bad about doing this. They would even ask a question, and interrupt before you were able to answer it.

I realize that for some people it isn't a big deal. My wife is one of them. Her family is what my daughter calls 'competitive talkers'. Who ever talks the loudest, interrupts the most, or completes the other person's sentence wins. Myself, I find it rude. And I Just won't put up with it.

I adopted the practice many years ago of withdrawing myself from the conversation if the other person interrupts or talks over me twice. You've just shown you have no respect for my opinion, or you're simply not interested in what I have to say.

It drives my wife nuts. Sometimes she can't help herself. After 32 years, she'll still interrupt, or try to finish my sentence.

I'm kind of quiet anyway. Silence doesn't bother me.

Now if they interrupted with something like, "My god! It's going to kill us!" That would be a different story.

Default Know What You Mean....

I do the withdrawal thing too. I am usually quiet also. Some times, someone will remark that I "can" talk or "don't say much". I usually respond with "That's right, I don't say much, but when I do, it's important, so shut up, & pay attention". Wife used to really get PO'd when I would do that.

Nedro,

I used to have a sign in my office that said, "If you think you have something important or interesting to say, there's an 80% chance you're wrong."

Never bothered me. A good friend of my has a habit of answering my questions if he thinks he knows where its going. If i say "no" he'll often throw out another answer. Usually by then I'll just tell him to "shut up for a sec" and finish my original question or thought. But it doesnt bother me.

I seems that people just get excited thats all

Ugh I dislike that. When it happens I just quiet down and stop talking. They usually get the picture. I'm a very animated talker and I'm pretty social so it's noticeable when I check out of the conversation.... and the problem is usually solved...

I think it is to some extent a cultural thing. Not entirely, by any means, but to some extent.

There is a scene in one of Tony Hillerman's Navajo police novels where the Navajo cop is riding with the FBI agent. The agent is blabbing away and the Navajo has to remind himself that he needs to occasionally say something because white people tend to think one is not listening if one doesn't at least occasionally say something. He thinks to himself that with Navajo, if someone is talking he knows the others are listening.

The Japanese are kind of like that, like the Navajo. Good listeners. Everyone gets a chance to say his piece. I often restrain American colleagues from breaking in when the Japanese side is not yet finished. I have gotten used to this so when I go back to the States for business meetings it always seems to me like "loudest guy wins."

In my personal life, speaking one on one with people with whom I am familiar, like my wife or children, when interrupted I just keep gradually increasing the volume of my voice until the interrupter shuts down, at which point I lower it back to normal. Or another way I deal with it is to stop mid sentence, wait patiently for the interrupter to stop, and then just resume my sentence from its midpoint, totally ignoring what the interrupter has said. (Petty, but fun!) But I do think I only do this within my own family.

But it does seem to me that I get interrupted a lot by all sorts of people... Hmm. Maybe I am just slower than most...

My wife's family talks like that. Just the way they communicate kind of reminds me of the time my bard rock rooster (hank) knocked the brahma rooster (jerome) off his prize capture, thats when the whole yard turned to gang violence. Chickens squalking roosters dancing around one another feathers flying it was ugly I tell you. kind of like thanksgiving, but sometimes you just got to step back and watch the show. Throw some food over the fence and it ends as fast as it started. Nobody's mad just establishing the pecking order all over again. Doeboy

Default Verbal combat

I do not tolerate it well when someone wants to shout the other speaker down. I will not hesitate to point out the rudeness of the act. If it continues in my home, I remove the rude person. If it continues in another location, I remove 'self.

Always reminds me of one of my father's sayings;

"Most speak because they have to say something, I wise man speaks when he has something to say."

It really frosts me when somebody starts in when I'm clearly busy on the phone. I have done the full evil-eye stare and "I'll come and see you when I'm done with my call" on a few occasions. As a culture comparison, that reaction drives Americans nuts, I suspect because I have broken their sense of control. Folk in the UK just think I'm a grumpy old sod.

It makes me freaking crazy! I purpose myself as a good listener and try to respond with an intelligent answer if I know it.
I have no problem with saying I dont know. Please don't butt in while I'm trying to speak.

End result is an intellegent conversation.

Some people use a lot of words to say very little, they just jibber jabber along saying nothing. I tend to only speak when I have something to say.
Annoys my wife sometimes. She calls me a stoic Injun.
When I do say something and someone talks over me I'll either just turn and leave or if they're very annoying I'll yell over them.
"Why are you yelling?" "If you'd shut the hell up when I'm talking, I wouldn't have to."

If someone should ask you a question and someone else answers, I always say "You probably wonder how I do that without moving my lips"

The other party usually gets it.

My beloved wife is a very bad offender which drives me insane.
She will ask me a question about something and half way through my answer start a different conversation. To her defense, she worked in health care all her adult life and it seems to be common behavior for most doctors and nurses too.

i have a co worker that i have known since kindergarten. he will finish your sentence for you. for about a month, we were paired as a crew on one of the presses and towards the end, i would try to start sentences way off from their ending...he backed off...a little...it annoys all of us and we actually joke about it...he does too...lol

pardon me............excuse me...................hey can I get a word in here?

I used to have a girlfriend that would interrupt me and talk over me while on the phone, so I started hanging up on her when she would do it. Took her a few times but she figured it out finally.

My wife does that too occasionally . Worse yet, she'll start conversations with people in the room with her while she's talking to me on the phone. I hang up.

I was taught and try to live by the motto

"It is better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and be known as one"

I interrupt my girlfriend sometimes, but lets me honest, if you dont interrupt a female at one point or another youll never say another word to them.

That is also one of my pet peeves mentioned above. Being on the phone with somebody and they start talking to somebody else they are with out of the blue. I would rather hang up than listen to their conversation. If I wanted other people to hear my conversation I would put it on speaker phone. Have the decency to ask me to hold on at least and answer the other persons question.

Hi:
I have had that problem of being talked over or interrupted all my life, but i always thought its because I speak slow and with a southern drawl. However I am now guilty of doing the same but its because my hearing is kind of poor (thanks to chemo).

Sir, I also find such behavior rude, and it tells me something about those who do it. If "Let me finish" doesn't work, I check out of the conversation.

On the other hand, though, some people just aren't worth listening to. [shrug]

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Ever notice how Piers Morgan does that all the time on his show? He seems to not be able to just shut up and listen, particularly when he doesn't like what is being said. Why do I watch Morgan? Because it's always good to get to know your enemy.

This is a pet peeve of mine too! I think it is rude, and an indication that the other party isn't listening, and/or doesn't care about what you are saying. My parents didn't do it, and they certainly didn't tolerate it from me. I didn't tolerate it from my kids either.

I too think it is very, very disrespectful to interrupt or talk over another. "Competitive talking" is a good description of my wife's large family...drives me nuts. Over the years I have collected quotes that I like. Two that come to mind that relate to this thread include "The tongue weighs little, but few can hold it," and "A man of words, and not of deeds; is like a garden, full of weeds." The latter quote came off a colonial Powder Horn in a museum, not sure where I picked up the other one. And lastly, being vertically challenged (OK, short), I live by "No tree is too tall for a short dog to lift his leg on.' Has served me well.... Semper Fi

I usually just stop talking. If something needs to be said I will slightly raise my voice and interrupt what ever they went off about. My girl friends family is very emotional/excitable. If they get an idea or an emotion they will just run with it no matter how crazy or completely false it is. They will start yelling over who ever is talking and then just go rambling on.

It's rude beyond words, and I hate it.

When folks do that to me I, like others have suggested, just stop talking after 10 or 15 seconds they look at me and I say when you are done speaking I will finish my sentence.

I've also been known on a rare occasion to just walk of when that happens.

there are a lot of "humans" out there that are "special" and need extra attention. When encountering these types, I use the wisdom of buddy holly and let them….."rave on"

Have a friend who is so self-absorbed that he occasionally realizes that he needs to inquire about what may be happening in my life.
He'll throw out some sort of inquiry and before I can get out 1/3 of the information he's already covered me up with more talking about what he's been doing, has done and is going to do.
That's a patience - tester.

Default People that interrupt and/or talk over you.

I've know a fellow for 50 years who is like this. He's 81 years old now. It's like dealing with a self absorbed 14 year old boy.His own family avoids him.How the hell does someone live that long without developing any social skills?!
