Default Things not to do after hernia surgery

1) Sit at the computer for too long.

2) Sit watching the TV for too long. I am doing a lot of TV watching as I stand and walk about an it drives the pets mad.

3) Most important, don't reflexively reach out and grab at thing that are about to fall off the counter. YEOOWW!!! I've done it twice since Friday and it bloody hurts hours after the event. Trouble is, how do you stop yourself?

4) If you must put jeans on to go outside, find the biggest and baggiest pair you have and walk around holding them up. A belt is not a good plan. Guess who grabbed the wrong pair yesterday?

Must go as I think my time is up according to #1.

Sir, this sounds a lot like when I had lower back surgery. Sitting and sudden movements will get ya.

Take your meds and go lie down. Recovery from surgery is one of the few times in life when laziness works to your benefit.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Keep moving. You will feel better quicker. As soon as you can get out of the house start walking. Go slow at first. I took a cane with me in case. Also keep the reacher tool handy bending are squatting is ROUGH. Hope you feel better soon.

If you drop your motorbike, don't pick it up yourself, wait for your buddies to come back for you. I had a buddy who just could not absorb this principle, so I got to visit him in the VA, not just once, but for what came to be known as the Second (then Third, Fourth and Fifth) Annual Nick J. Hernia Surgery. It is not as simple as it sounds. There is something about a motorcycle lying on its side that demands to set aright.

Finally, one year during Rally Week, I was picking up some camping items at the Ace Hardware in Rapid City. I was just exiting the premises when I saw Nick walking toward me across the lot with a sheepish look on his face. Looking past him, I could see his bike lying on the curb. He had to take some ribbing, but it was less about biffing the bike, and more about taking five surgeries finally to learn the lesson.

There's three DON'Ts when it comes to lower back pains but could be applied to hernias as well.

1. Don't reach.

2. Don't twist.

3. Don't bend.

I went to back school and learned about this. After all, I added the fourth:

4. Don't make sudden movement.

LVSteve,
Did they repair yours with mesh or just sew it up?
I had one done the old fashioned way years ago and the wife had a mesh repair a couple of years ago. Seemed that her mesh repair healed up much faster than my old one did.

He did mine with the mesh. I am a little concerned that I am getting pain well away for the original site, almost on my hip. Dunno what that is all about.

Almost as bad is what the pain meds do to my digestion. I'm drinking plenty but I have little desire to eat while the works are on a severe go-slow despite help. Oh well, soup it is for a few days.

Three days after I had a hernia operation a "friend" dropped a 6 1/2 foot eastern diamondback at my feet. I broke all the "Don't" rules that day.

LVSteve,
I would think the pain might be due to the muscles being re-aligned and pulling differently than they did while you had the hernia. I wouldn't get too worried unless it persists for some time.
How long do you have lifting restrictions? The first time they told me "nothing over 20 pounds for six weeks." I almost blew that one back out lifting too much during the 4th week.
I need to have another one repaired, but I am a bit leery about the mesh repair. It begs the question "What happens if you rip one out right next to the patch and how to repair it the second time?"

Myron

I had the surgery in 1988. Lived in sweat pants & slept in my recliner. I had 26 staples from my ha ha to my hip bone. Doc took 'em out a week later. That was pure torture. I asked the doc about it & he said it was for the patients comfort.B.S., it hurt like Hell.

What you feel in your hip is probably referred pain from the doc roughing up one nerve or another. It'll pass. Try wearing a pair of sweat pants instead of jeans.

That's for sure!! I have bruises in places that give a whole new dimension to the phrase "rough sex". This is one time when being unattached is the safe option. To be fair the doc did warn me that this would happen. My hernia was a good size but largely painless. Go figure.

mountaingun629: yep, no lifting for about six weeks. Somebody may want me to travel by air soon but I'm telling them now that I am going nowhere before. my follow up appointment.

ordy: learned my lesson yesterday morning trying to wear jeans. Sweat pants/PJs are the dress code for a while. Trouble is I cannot find a pair of sweat pants that are wearable out. Must have tossed them.

One thing the doc was vague about was how long I should wear the support device. I took it off after 24 hours on hygiene grounds. Ain't it wonderful what we talk about on here?

WOW1...What a difference, I had mine done when I was 75 and had none on the problems that you speak of.

Never heard of a support device...very little pain, etc., Surgery about 05:30 in the morning and back home before noon.

Only thing the Doc stressed, as he gave me some syrupy red stuff in a bottle, "Take this and DO NOT PUSH" when on the throne.

Good LucK, Get Well...Time is a marvelous healer.

Reminds me of Johnny Carson's prune juice treatment for a cold. With breakfast you drink eight ounces of prune juice, with lunch eight ounces, with dinner sixteen ounces, and eight more at bedtime. He said it doesn't do much for the cold, but you sure think twice about sneezing.

Default Worst Ever!

OK. I shoveled snow in Conn. after the terrible 1982 blizzard about 4 months after a net job.....it really hurt.

But the worst came in '77 after a gall bladder surgery done the old way.

With the 13 inch belly cut.

So I am home on a Monday after a previous Thursday cut and stitch.
Guy from work comes to visit, and he hands me a seegar cuz somebody at aEtna Life had a baby boy.

I quit smoking in 1961 when my Dad threatened to whup me.

It being real nice outside, a spring day, I decided to get up on my 10 speed bike and ride a few blocks. Hey it was OK. Next thing I did was light up the cigar. Puff puff. New experience.

So I got to the corner and rode off the curb down into the street, and I had to use both hands. Cigar gives me a full inhale as my gut takes a sudden hurt from the curb drop..... and I do a another inhale on the rebound. Then I started uncontrolled deep wretching... and a widening of the stitching job the doctor had just done. What PAIN. I was disabled in the middle of an intersection.

The top part of that scar still shows the zigzag.

+1 on all the above!
I had open heart surgery and was out and about in 3 days.
Hernia was actually more painful and recovery slower.
Take it easy!

I had hernia surgery on 12-14-12 in the lower groin area with the mesh. The doctor told me not to lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk for 6-8 weeks.I went back to work about 4 weeks ago.I'm an electrician/contractor so I have to lift ladders, rolls of wire, etc. So far,no problems. My biggest problem during the recovery was not being able to do anything.Just about drove me crazy(short ride).Anyway,do what the doctors tell you and you should be fine.Good luck.

Short walks several times a day helps a lot. Don't walk too far at first, and a little farther every day. Not fast, just stroll. The pain in the hip may be from a staple in the bone holding the mesh in place. I strained mine too and it tool longer to quit hurting. I was not aware of this, but a friend who had abdominal surgery told me that he was stapled. Take your time, do not lift!! You could strain something that will lead to another hernia down the road.

I had mesh put in for a stomach hernia. I had 4 or 5 small incisions, the longest was about an inch. I was very uncomfortable for about a week, but i didn't fill the prescription I had for pain.

Buy bib overalls. Buy them one size bigger than the pant size you normally wear. (If you wear a 38, buy a 40). Very comfortable. not just for when you are recovering from hernia surgery.

I had the open type mesh surgery for a hernia some years ago. I was off work 6 weeks doing very little but did take a couple vacations. It took a long time for it to feel right and I favored that side a long time.
I had back surgery last year and the hernia repair was worse as far as recovery. Take it easy and sweat pants sound about right.
