Default National Gun Day: Louisville

Anyone have any luck at the gun show in Louisville this weekend? Large crowd in a much larger area of the KFEC. Saw 3 651's that were very pricey, glad I already have one. Lots of nice older revolvers at the same high prices. I was looking for a K-22 Combat Masterpiece but the least expensive one was $675 in decent shape, wasn't asked to make an offer. Oh well, I was only out $12 for the day.

I didnt have any luck. I saw alot of old shotguns and lever actions at high prices. I was looking for M1 carbine muzzle covers and couldnt find any. Ammo was still thru the roof and I didnt see any BIG ammo tables. Also I was looking for Power Pistol powder and couldnt find it as well. I was very surprised there wasnt alot of reloading tables. I was out 20 dollars for the day. Just wondering, how did you not pay for parking? lol

Got up early and beat the $8 parking rip off, eh.

I think the ticket takers get there at 7:45- 8:00 am.

Wonder why rburg hasn't done his customary gun show review?

I guess the OP will hate me for taking over the thread. Still its better than having another on the subject.

Yes, I went as always. It was nothing short of a great show. Even Lee here hammered me a few years ago for making bad comments on the promoter and all he was doing wrong. Well, I don't believe in pulling my punches and I call a spade a spade. That was back then, this is now. The show, as often in the spring, was huge. The crowds were as big as I've seen, and they came armed with dollars. Green ones with 00's on the end. (I even saw a $500 Bill). Better than all that, I didn't see many of the first timers. Everyone looked and was polite. No rude folks, but some who'd never been in a crowd before - ask GF about that.

So we came in the back door to a half empty room. Across the way was a purple curtain separating the gun show from the open floor space. That wasn't a good sign until we got past the curtain and the other half the room was huge, too. We found our tables pretty quick and set about putting our junk out.

We had maybe the most looked at item in the show. It was a 1.75 liter bottle of Buffalo Trace. Everyone wanted it, and many were willing to settle for a drink. In less than an hour we made up a sign to put on the neck. "Free if you can prove your name is Charlie Sherrill". That caused even more commotion. A few of the uninformed even claimed to be him, or worse, wanted to know who he was. Finally about 1:00 Charlie took it off the table and put it underneath.

I didn't get to see much of the show. Younger son came along tended shop. Charlie and I sat over in David Carrolls booth and talked. We both went out several times to look. I even bought a big old Browning gun suitcase from Blake. He's been complaining I never bought anything from him. Not true, I bought a very nice set of prewar service grips. And I bought a Leica scope from his pardner. I don't ever remember him buying anything from me!

Small world department. Way back about 1966 my brother applied to the FBI lab in Washington. They told him they don't accept applicants, they promote from the field agents. Worse, it would take over a year to vet him. He always was at the top of his class so he went for it. The first year he spent in Moscow, ID getting a Masters. Then he got hired as an agent and sent to Jackson, MS. From there the down home boys weren't playing nice so he was sent to Hattiesburg to try and babysit. And an old hand in their police department took him and everyone else new under his wing. I think the guys name was Arlon Mosch. That could be wrong, because Charlie remembers the same guy but not his name. He took Charlie and helped him along when he was new, in the same general time frame.

OK, I took along 5 guns and so much ammo I couldn't carry it. Probably injured my son's back as bad as mine. We used a 2 wheeler. Started out selling my 550 packs for $40. When it became apparent we were too cheap (we'd put 8 of them up and everyone would buy them.) So we upped it to $45 and then to $50, finally stopping at $55 where we sold everything. All gone! I sold two guns. Both to other vendors I knew well.
Brought a pocket full of green home, got to find my bank on Monday.

Charlie, on one of his buying missions, came back with a brand spanking new M1 Carbine. Looks just like it was a new issue in 1943. He was grinning, ear to ear. He paid $40 for it. No foolin'. Its a movie prop gun. And it fooled all of us, too. When you started looking real close, you find a screw in the top of the hand guard and a few little things, like the magazine has no follower. When he gets it home he's going to see if a real mag fits. He was grinning, and probably pretty formidable walking around with a grip on what looks like a half gallon of booze and a carbine to protect it. He had to go look up Junior who was over at the military show, trying to scalp folks.

Frakes didn't have Doublesharp to abuse so he brought a friend along. They're taking our table today, I'm too tired and out of stuff to sell. Don't believe that last, I'll just bring more for the Lexington show in two weeks.

I had a really good time. The crowd was big but getting around because the promoter made the aisles wide enough to get around piles of stupid people who stop in the way. Frakes and I I went for a hike, trying to find one of our vendor friends. As we were walking along he was predicting the moves blockers would pull to try to stop traffic. The worst/most successful were the old fat guys in motor driven carts. They don't look, don't care, and just take off without warning. But just then a guy (idiot) in a double wide stroller realized he could cause more trouble if he turned sideways or at 45 degrees. So he did. Of course pulling the move right beside a pileup of 3 deep people looking at something on a table. Strollers and huge wheel chairs should require a license to run.

I need to call my son to see how he did last night with his kids, tired as he was. My wife watched them yesterday so he could go along.

If all gun shows could be this good, I'd go every weekend!

We park outside the gate at the Preston entrance, close to the Thorntons and walk in. It's a bit of a walk, but not too bad. I would like to meet up with you guys sometime in the future.

Two weeks there's a good one in Lexington. We'll be there with a table, hopefully along the front wall where we've been the last few shows. Not sure how you'll find us. Just two old guys, my partner Joe with a white shirt (if he reads this he'll go buy another color, just to cross us up), and me probably taking a nap in my chair. This one will be a mess for us with both our sons wanting to come, plus Ben who posts here and will be selling pocket watches. Never all of us there at the same time.

The Lexington show is at Rupp. You park for free in the huge lot to the north. Best bring your own food if you're planning on staying long. Even a drink because they charge like $4 for a coke.

Jr. and I got there Thursday night and did the SOS on Friday. Walked a lot and looked a lot but bought nothing due to high prices. I met Olivia Black, the girl from Pawn Stars, who was set up at the front door with one of the guys who appraises stuff on the show. She was real nice. Jr. took my pic with her and she also gave me an autographed pic she had laying on the table. Did National Gun Day on Saturday with the aforementioned Burg and Co. The retirement bunny had left me a large jug of Buffaloe Trace (thank you very much) that had to be placed under the table after too many inquiries. Walked and looked a lot here also. I bought some signs that read "mines" to help decorate the ammo room and the fake carbine. Line it up next to the others I own and you can't tell the difference unless you get real close.

As we left the show our intentions were to head south on I65. We got a call from one of our friends from Jackson, Ms. who was also headed south and he told us they had been stuck in traffic for hours. A semi had struck a Expedition carrying eight people from behind and it caught fire and killed six of them. We took alternate routes for the next 100 miles or so and decided to spend the night near Lynchburg, Tenn. We got up the next morning and made the Jack Daniels tour before the long drive home. We got in at 8:00 p.m. last night.

I enjoyed the shows but we found more stuff in the shops on the way up there. I bought a minty 686-1 for $400 and Jr. got a German marked Hi-Power for a little less than $600. Also found some old bayonets with old price tags at a flea mall and a lot of other non gun related stuff. It was a nice trip, but it's always good to get back home.
