Are panics getting easier to start?
I remember the oil embargo of 73 and there were some local gas shortages. Not much panic buying where I lived in Indiana. Then there were the panics based on rumor which made toilet paper fly out of the stores, then it was antifreeze. I think the panic buying mindset took over with Y2K. People I know hoarded every thing, bought generators stocked up on food and in a minor way bought guns. The real winners were the Indians as there were not enough computer programmers available to be ready for the high tech panic of the computer world grinding to a halt. Part of the reason so many help centers are in India goes back to that time and all the money flowing there. Of course the gun and ammo buying panic of 2008 and the current situation. So is it easier to start a panic than it once was?

We are constantly improving our comm capabilities. Better comm = faster sharing of rumors and troll info = easier panic.

People used to have to wait 'til they got home from work to read the newspaper or turn on the radio to find out what's going on. Now it appears on their Iphone or computer in nanoseconds. Also they can order, buy or hold the stuff on line.

It is easier because almost no one thinks for themselves anymore. The masses believe what they see and hear on the boob tube and if it is on the INTERNET it has to be true. Carefully look and listen to the mainstream media and you will witness true propaganda. If only Joe Stalin had had this modern communication bonanza he could have cleared the entire country.

Yes, I'd say so. Not only is it much easier to spread information (or disinformation) but as the general conditions in our country deteriorate, people are increasingly worried, and so are more prone to try to take actions (not always rational or logical) to secure themselves for an uncertain future.

All of these panics are designed
All of these 'panics' are designed with one thing in mind and that's raising prices. That's getting specialty prices for commodities. I worked at a grocery store and besides the toilet paper I remember a 'sugar shortage', among others.

You guys should see what happens before a snow storm up here in the Northeast, no one forgets 1978.
I have to admit, I am with the mobs at the super market.

That Explains It!
Panic buying must have caused the supply of buggy whips to fly off the shelves. I can't find one anywhere in any caliber! The Preppers no doubt bought them all up.

I have not bought one extra of anything this winter through all the storms and I have been fine. Including the blizzard last month.

I heard that used, faded, red cypress mulch is going for $1K/oz in parts of the country. I have plenty at half price, shipping included. Get some before others find out. Joe

Perhaps folks are just more Gullible than they once were, I think it goes along along with the general lack of common sense we see in this country.
I understand there may be a Broccoli shortage this spring, but I' ready if it happens.

The modern media continually preps people by doomsday headliines and making simple situations a crisis.
People do not think for themselves any more nor do they analyze situatiions as was done in the past.
They want to be told what to do instead of deciding what must be done.
Perfect recipe for a crisis.

More gullible than they once were? You mean like 1938 when people freaked out while listening to a War Of The Worlds radio broadcast?

But think of how bad that would be today. A limited number of people heard that broadcast and look what happened. Imagine if that started as an Internet story today how fast it would spread. Through in a bit of CGI graphics, even if it was filched from a movie and it would spread like wildfire.
The current ammo and firearm panic is a good example.
Within 24 hours of the shootings, people were hoarding, buying like crazy, and jacking up prices.
Of course the media makes it worse, especially when it's one of the liberal causes they support. They are nothing more than Democrat operatives with bylines. Believe nothing that you see or hear on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS etc. Fox News is better, but the problem is that they have way too much commentary and not enough reporting.

I miss getting chewed out by my Dad when I went out to buy the Late Edition of the NY Daily News, and coming back with the morning edition. If you didn't read two editions of the same newspaper in one day, you were set back a week or more when it came to world events.

When I heard that Sheryl Crow suggested that we all get by on "one square of toilet paper" it sure caused a panic for me. Thank goodness that silliness wasn't adopted as the New Standard.

You never got that from Walter Cronkite. He was a leftist and slanted the news. He was just smarter and more subtle than the clowns on TV now.

I think the current generation has been conditioned through public education and the media.
