I recall Dad saying we couldn't make good time following the unmarked car ahead of us. Eventually we came to a Dairy Queen and the car ahead of pulled in. Dad said he'd probably pull right back out again and follow us. He did!

PA state troopers used to take off their campaign hats and set them on the seat beside them.

I've only seen it once, but my town has a marked 5.0 completely worked out. My guess is that it's a D.A.R.E. car they take to the schools. It was behind me last summer as I was getting on the Parkway in my full bolt-on (and LOUD) Formula and the guy driving it definitely let me know he was behind me; holding gears until about 3k rpm up the ramp. We hit the Parkway and he gets on it a bit and passes me, so I glance over and see his head turning back towards the road, realizing he was checking me out.

We go through the toll and he slows down a bit giving me a chance to catch up. Parkway is 3 lanes at this point, he's in the left, I'm in the right, pacing him about 100 yards. We both merge into the center lane at the same time, still about 100 yards distance. Now I'm doing 62mph and gradually gaining. About 20 yards back he gooses it a bit then coasts back to his original speed. I'm still gaining so I pop in the left lane to attempt to pass (speed limit is 65). I get right next to him and glance over, sure enough I see him checking me out again with a grin on his face and he does a hand gesture that I understood to mean "goose it". I got on the gas a bit and roared forward about 10 yards then let off. He did the same and gave a thumbs-up and a wave before he rocketed off ahead.

Was nice to see a cop with an appreciation of both what he was driving, as well as other cars similar to his. Moral of the story: LEOs are just like everyone else, this one and I just happened to be car guys.

On more than one occasion, after being counseled on the need to write more tickets, I have asked the shift SGT "Am I writing tickets to increase compliance with the law or am I doing it to raise revenue?" I had one take my warning ticket book away from me and state his policy was "ZERO TOLERANCE" as he put another officer an I on the only road into the subdivision in which he lived to "write tickets and slow the traffic down" with specific instructions to ticket anyone going more than 5 over. His policy changed when both his wife and oldest son were each ticketed for 15 over within 10 minutes of our arrival.

Their cars didn't come with hat and coat racks?

Sure enough, there is the marked Vauxhall Senator pootling along at 60 mph in the slow lane with the speed limit being 70 mph. Nobody seemed to want to pass him at any more than about 63 mph in the middle lane and the fast lane was empty. I duly moved over into the fast lane and blew by at an indicated 75 mph, although I was likely doing less because over-reading speedos are the norm in Europe.

I actually saw the drivers of two other cars point me out to their passengers gesturing "He's going to get nicked". Did the cops react? Of course not, the road was clear, the conditions were good and the traffic light. Besides, I wasn't the one balking the traffic just because I could see a cop car.
I saw that last fall when driving up to OK one night.
Texas recently bumped the speed limit on I-45 to 75, day or night.
It used to be 65 night, 70 day.. I almost always drive up there late
at night, so the new change was mighty fine with me..
I drive exactly the limit, with the cruise on, in the right lane unless
passing..
Anyway, I'm humming along down the road, and I've got another car
in front of me in the left lane, and I see we are approaching a DPS
trooper who is in the right lane, and doing about 55... I guess he was
in no rush.. He was not in a car. He was in a ramcharger truck or
whatever.. The type that is like a Blazer, etc..
Anyway, the car in the left lane rolls up on the trooper, and I guess it
then dawned on em that it was a state trooper he was fixing to pass
at 75 mph. What does he do? Yep, throws on the brakes, and is
afraid the pass the trooper. So I'm now approaching from the rear in
the right lane, and I'm waiting for the car to pass, so I can do the same.
I finally ended up in the left lane waiting for them to pass, and am
just about on their tail close enough to read bumper stickers.

They finally decide to gingerly pass the trooper, and then roll off into
the right lane in front of him..
I kick the cruise back to 75 mph worth and pass the trooper with a
whoosh, just shaking my head.

I think the trooper kind of enjoyed toying with them.. And it was
pretty danged funny..
These days, most of the unmarked cars I see used on patrol are those
Dodge Chargers, or whatever they are.. Most are black, and I can spot
one from miles and miles away..
Around Houston, lots of detectives use unmarked cars, and they
can be anything.. Probably seized vehicles, etc..
They call them "cool cars".

The worse vehicle my Department ever bought were Ford Fairmount's in the mid 1970's.. Somebodies bright idea. I'm a big guy, and had to break the seat so i could fit behind the wheel. No leg room. If it had a moon roof i would have looked like Dino from the Fleintstone's with my head sticking out.
