Default Which is safer to carry - Revolver or Semi-Auto?

I'm thinking in terms of unintended or accidental discharge e.g. the hammer catching on clothing, dropping, forgetting which cylinder has a live round, kids pulling the trigger etc. And what is the lightest, most comfortable CCW revolver out there?

Any gun is only as safe as its owner.

Most revolvers have just one cylinder, with usually, five to seven chambers. An auto pistol has just one chamber, at the rear end of the barrel. A few revolvers have a spare cylinder, usually chambered for a similar cartridge. But only one is in the gun at any given time.

To answer your question, a revolver is usually considered much safer in the hands of most people. But you still need to learn it and learn basic safety precautions.

Believe me, if the average cop could be pretty safe with a basic revolver, you can be, unless you're a total klutz.

I think it's obvious that you need to take a basic handgun class. And read some good gun books.

And load every chamber in your revolver's cylinder...

My opinion is, the double action revolver or striker fired semi-auto are the safer actions.

I think the striker-fired auto is the least safe. But opinions vary.

Either a pistol or a revolver can be safe for ccw as long as the person carrying has bothered to get some training. It generally comes down to personal preference.
I have a motor nerve condition giving me weakness in my right hand and wrist so for my purposes a revolver is a more practical choice.
I carry a model 442 with a fully loaded cylinder either in my pocket or on my belt in one of my homemade holsters along with a couple of loaded quickstrips.
While the magazine of a pistol can carry as many cartridges as my snubby and two reloads, I stand a good risk of limp wristing and I'd have difficulties clearing a malfunction.
I recommend that you study up and determine which is best for you.

You really need to do a better job of informing yourself concerning modern handguns. For example most modern handgun employ some type of internal safety that prevents the hammer striking the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled fully to the rear. As for those handguns that don't employ this type of internal safety they usually feature an intertial firing pin design, a grip safety, and a manual thumb activated safety. As a result discharges due to the accidents you've describe range from extremely rare to flat out impossible. Spend enough time around modern handguns and you'll come to realize that all those reports about guns "just going off" are either intentional misinformation on the part of the News Media or flat out Lies on the part of the person holding the gun that "just went off". Modern handguns are perfectly safe as long as the person holding one knows how to use it properly and follows the rules for firearms safety.

As for the lightest CCW revolver, IMO that would be the S&W 340PD. An eleven ounce beast with a shocking amount of truly vicious recoil.

If you are new to guns, i would go with a revolver...but not the lightest one out there...get yourself something you can practice shooting with some comfort...you are not going to enjoy shooting an 11 ounce gun and most likely, you will never become proficient with it...if you want a snub, at least get a steel weight to start....

Im going to open by addressing quality of design, which differs a little from an arms overall quality.
If you look at the good old Colt peacemaker. it is advised not to carry this gun with a round under the hammer. They ad to start somewhere in the development process and overlooked a few real world issues. As a result it is prone to discharge if dropped.
Mind you, for its period in history, there was no revolver finer.
From that point forward Colt, S&W and others did a lot of revision to address this and most arms of quality may, and should be carried with all chambers loaded. No one ever wanted a smaller capacity or a lesser caliber in a gunfight.
as for autos ... these too should be carried with a live round chambered. You only think you'll have time and ability to rack the slide in a gunfight.
In either case you will want a handgun of quality, whose mechanics you understand.
As for a kid pulling the trigger ... you bet it'll discharge. a gun that wouldn't do so is entirely useless. Avoiding this requires some thought into your own protocol with any gun.
lightest, smallest, and most comfortable really should not be at the top of the priority list.
Power and accuracy come first, and concessions are made thereafter toward acceptable levels of weight and comfort.
The last thing you need is a painful to shoot gun that groups over a foot at contact distance.

A Ruger SP101 snub in .357 Mag is a good choice. Not too heavy to carry all day, and not so light that it hurts to shoot.
Plus there's that whole .38 special thing.

A double action revolver is the safest. A single action revolver like the old colt single action not as safe unless you load five of the six rounds and leave the empty chamber directly under the hammer. A semi auto is a little more complex with a few levers to confuse you untill you get used to it.

small revolver has one benefit over semi autos of any size.

God forbid you need to use it for whatever reason, you dont have to chase down errant spent shells, when you should be beating feet!

Filbogado-

Where are you? What's available there? Are you in the USA ? Your board name makes me wonder.

The safety answers will be the same regardless of where you live, but if we know where you are, it may be easier to suggest guns that might be sold there. Or, you can ask about specific models.

Your first should probably be a stainless steel .38 or .357 Magnum revolver on a medium frame, made by Ruger or S&W. Sip's suggestion of a .357 Ruger SP-101 makes sense with the barrel length a fraction over three inches. It's strong enough and beefy enough to fire a reasonable amount with .357 ammo, and will do very well with any .38 Special loads. For reasons too complex to explain now, any .357 will fire .38 ammo as a lighter load. The SP-101 is small enough to carry concealed in the right holster, but durable enough for longtime use.

Some people are not safe with a rubber hammer. Others can carry both and never have an accidental discharge. The answer is the safest gun is the one that you train with.

Default It only takes a little

Not a lot of training is required to use a DA revolver. Having to fumble with anything like slides or safety toggles makes me leery. Tap, rack, bang is not necessary with a revolver. FTE and FTF don't apply to a revolver. If you check that your rounds will rotate in the cylinder w/o sticking due to a high primer or something you are ready to go If the first round doesn't fire, just pull the trigger until it does. Just point, shoot and take great pictures. If you can't tell, I favor revolvers.

Striker fired pistols MAY be safe to carry one in the barrel (I doubt it) but when you you hear of an AD if you will check the majority of the time it was a striker fired gun. Larry

All of my guns - rifles, shotguns, revolvers, pistols, SA, DA, striker fired - are equally safe. They only fire when there's a round in the chamber and I pull the trigger.

Thanks for asking - I'm presently residing in Prince William County, VA but I make regular trips to Manila to keep in touch with my extended family network. Growing up in the Visayas, I never felt a need to actually carry a gun myself, relying instead on the safety provided by a circle of friends, political loyalists, tenants, policemen, etc. who did the carrying for the family. This may sound boastful, but if you are familiar with the Philippines' local feudal system, it is not uncommon to have so-called private armies or even just supporters. We couldn't afford private security since we were definitely not rich but where money didn't exist, political influence did. My relatives included a congressman, a mayor, a police chief, and under their influence were army folks, prison trustees, holdup artists, etc. these were the folks who carried guns for us. I thought the movie "Walking Tall" pretty much faithfully depicted life in the town I grew up in, which shall remain unnamed.

Fast forward to America, where personal protection is a do-it-yourself proposition, since its is obviously very expensive to hire bodyguards here. I attended a basic firearms course a few months ago, and during the customary live fire exercise, the instructor handed me a revolver. I had a hard time with my first shoot. The trigger was too hard to pull. I could see the cylinder turning as I squeezed the trigger, but I couldn't tell which chamber the firing pin was going to land on. I couldn't even remember if the cylinder was turning clockwise or counterclockwise. Total frustration.

Then the instructor handed me a semi-automatic and boy was it like night and day. Light trigger pull, no guessing which round is going out, one-click magazine drop, etc. So I ended up initially favoring the semis and I now have 2 of them.

But the revolver mystique continues to fascinate me. I already have a CCW permit and I fantasize about having a snub-nose revolver as my carry weapon. I wanted to learn more about revolvers, hence this terribly long post.

My apologies to all - next time I will offer to teach you how to enjoy "balut" eating in return for a crash course on the care and feeding of revolvers (lol!)

sincerely,

Fil

I'm of the opinion that a DAO/concealed hammer (Model 642/442) revolver is the safest handgun for pocket or outer carry. One has to deliberately place a finger on the trigger to fire it, and given the trigger pull weight is such that it would be an extremely rare case where one would accidentally discharge such a gun without using one's finger. Second in line would be a 1911 style pistol carried "Israeli style", with no round in the chamber. One would have to rack the slide while or after drawing the weapon to charge it up. Next would be the same pistol with a round in the chamber, and the hammer carefully lowered, necessitating one to have to cock the gun while drawing. I agree with another poster, striker fired pistols are not safe so long as you have a round in the chamber; they're safe providing you don't have a round in the chamber, and have mastered the "Israeli Draw".

Auto loading guns have been known to machine gun. Bolt action, pump and auto loaders have been known to fire when the bolt is closed. SXS and O/Us have been known to fire when breeched. I have never heard or a revolver going off when the cyl. is closed. Larry

Welcome to the Forum Fili! It sounds like you have had good luck with your semiauto of choice, so that sounds like the right carry piece for you. This gives you something for self defence while you are learning more about revolvers. Honestly, if I were in your position I'd be looking for a 4" Model 10, and begin practicing with it. When you are comfortable with double action shooting and managing the revolver, you might consider looking at one of the S&W Airweights. My personal EDC is a 442. It is a great gun, easy to carry, and probably more accurate than I am.

Default Which is safer to carry - Revolver or Semi-Auto?

It has been well discussed here. A lot of it comes down to the shooter. No one can save you from yourself. I one time saw a guy draw his pistol, and before he had even cleared leather, he cranked off a round into his own hip! The bullet went through his holster, belt, pants and flesh, hit his pelvis, then rode down his femur and came out at the side of his knee. THAT is a bad start to a day.

From a pure mechanical design viewpoint, a 1911 carried cocked and locked is the winner. The thumb and grip safeties are redundant. A striker fired autopistol is less tolerant of stupid behavior than most other designs (I am not counting SA revolvers because I have none and they are not practical for my life). Any firearm carried as it supposed to be is safe until you need it to not be safe, which is the time when you point at someone, line up the sights, and apply pressure to the loud switch. In that situation, if it is not dangerous, it is not useful.

I like either of my Charter Arms revolvers with the hammer blocks for carry; the "on duty" is 12 oz's, and fires +P's. As far as a safe auto, I'll take a S&W with double action, AND a decocker/safety.

Everyone that's responded to your question has given you an honest, heartfelt answer. And as you can see, from their experiences, familiarities, and training, there are a number of different answers, all correct from the viewpoint of the respondents, but different.

In my opinion the inherent safety of a revolver, or auto pistol lies behind the user's eyes, between the user's ears, and extends all the way down to each fingertip.

I've spent a good portion of my life on ranges, both as a student, and as an instructor. I've seen negligent (and a few, but very, very few accidental) discharges from revolvers, semi auto pistols, semi auto and pump shotguns, semi auto, and bolt action rifles, and one sub machine gun.

Modern semi auto pistols can, on very rare occasions, and because of a mechanical malfunction, fire when a round is chambered. A few, can discharge when dropped on the hammer, or muzzle. A few, very few, revolvers can discharged when dropped. A few holster designs can allow something to snag the trigger.

Ruling these rare occurrences out, the remainder of the negligent discharges are caused by one thing, and one thing only. Someone placed a finger in the trigger guard, and manipulated the trigger. Whether they were novice shooters and therefore unfamiliar with that particular handgun, or veteran shooters suffering from complacency is immaterial really. A safety protocol was violated.

I'm glad to see you've taken some classes and are making an effort to educate yourself. Coming here and asking for advise was a good decision. My advise is, if your financial situation allows, go to a shooting school ran by a reputable individual or company. Also go to some ranges where a variety of handguns are available to rent and shoot. Also join a gun club where you can get some face to face advise from some veteran shooters.

It has been my experience that when you are talking about top tier handguns, revolvers or semi autos, there is no "best" really. Only favorites.

Whether they are safe for you to operate, carry concealed, store in your home, car, or workplace, is entirely on you.

A semi auto not racked would be the safest to carry, with regards to accidental discharge, which is what the question was. Though I consider that not as available when needed.

The old cop carried his 1911 cocked and locked. One day a woman noticed the hammer back and asked, "Isn't that gun dangerous?" The old cop replied, "Ma'am, if it wasn't dangerous I wouldn't carry the damned ol' thing!"

If you're worried about unintentional discharge, the safest gun is one that is unloaded, welded into a solid mass and locked in a vault. If you're about to have your head stove in by some miscreant with a crowbar, the safest gun is one in your hand, loaded, pointed straight between his eyes, and you've just pulled the trigger. Most of the time, "safe" is somewhere in between. "Safe" and "best" have many meanings, many nuances. We all have to judge for ourselves what comfort level we have.

Your experience with the revolver and auto at the range only tells me that you do not have enough trigger time to make an informed decision yet. A light, easy pull on the trigger is not necessarily what you want when you're amped up with adrenaline, and all your fine motor control has gone out the window. Double-action revolvers (and autos) have the virtue of simplicity - align sights, pull trigger. Sometimes that's all your brain can handle. Of course they have the drawback of presumably being more difficult to aim accurately while making that long pull.

As with most things, there are tradeoffs.

Sir, The first rule is "All guns are always loaded." In my opinion, a double action revolver is the safest to carry. People have been doing so for over 100 years. As stated above, the best safety is your brain. Im not going to tell you what you should carry. I wont even tell you what I carry( its a surprise. Try several and you will know when you have found the right one.

Default No short answer

Hello Fil
On a modern Smith & Wesson or Ruger double action revolver you do not carry empty chambers and you do not care which way the cylinder is turning. You look at your sights and if it is the correct target with no one standing nearby you pull the trigger.

Every handgun, except rim fire, should be checked by opening up the cylinder/slide to be sure it is empty, then dry fired until you are very comfortable with it. Be supervised first time you dry fire. If you are in an apartment you must understand thin walls and bullet penetration. (the subject gets long).

(If memory serves) Back in about 1905 smith & Wesson lost a navy contract when a revolver was dropped on the hammer and it fired, shooting a sailor in the leg. The rebounding hammer, and hammer block was the answer. Others have their own systems. The very very small revolvers by other makers are another subject.

You said you have trouble pulling the trigger on a revolver?

So I must ask - was the revolver too big for your hand - or was the trigger to hard to pull?

Which semi-autos did you buy. Can you see the hammer or do you know if they are half cocked. I need to know what you can shoot.

Where am I going……
If your two semi autos are inexpensive ones that are always cocked you are off to a bad start. The safety must always be on, and can be moved off if it is carried loose inside a purse or pocket.

Double action 38 special revolvers were used by police in this country for about 70 years. They were usually the biggest revolver the average person could shoot really well. They only take 12 hours of training time as opposed to a couple of days with semi-autos.

That is, until the half cocked, double action, semi-autos came on the scene. They seem to be gravitating toward about 6 to 8 pound trigger pulls, I believe New York requires 9 pound pulls on police semi-autos.

The only thing dangerous about double action revolver is the very soft trigger pull once the hammer is cocked. Inexperienced shooters often accidentally tighten up and pull the trigger when startled. But for distance shooting, or something like shooting a rattlesnake in the head, the fine trigger on most revolvers is as good as it gets, off the shelf, for a reasonable price.

If you get distracted when your cell phone rings no gun is safe. No instructor feels safe when a student turns to ask a question and accidentally points the handgun at him, for example.

So the short answer is the safest to carry is a hammerless (covered hammer) revolver because there is no hammer to cock. But it is much harder to pull the trigger for an accurate distance shot.

If you want to continue on this line of progression about semi-autos then post back to me.
I am curious why you would have trouble pulling the trigger on a revolver but you can rack the slide on a semi-auto. Did you buy tip up barrel semi-auto’s?

All I can really do is give you ideas to read about and questions to ask your instructor.

Default Revolver Basics

Fil,
I will not be back on the computer until tomorrow afternoon. Your last post specifically mentioned revolvers. Lots of good information has been given here by others.

here is the Smith & Wesson web site with pictures and descriptions of their handguns. This address is specific for Revolvers. They come in all sizes. When a new shooter picks something bigger than 38 special their training is often much slower because recoil can be intimidating and people start squinting eyes and flinching. If you can afford to buy a .22 rimfire snub nose revolver first you will be glad you did. Buy good ear protection.

Regarding two hand grip. A really bad habit is cocking a revolver hammer with left thumb when shooting right handed - and crossing that left thumb over the top of other thumb, and pulling trigger with right hand index finger. Eventually when you switch back to semi-auto the slide can injure your left thumb badly.
Other than that revolvers are very safe when pointed in a safe direction.

Do not begin by shooting at a target that is too far away for good hits.

If a cleaning kit does not come in the box, buy swabs, patches, and bore brush. Gun Oil and a toothbrush. If the cylinder gets hard to turn (trigger harder to pull) oil the toothbrush or cloth and go across the end of cylinder and rear of the barrel. Wipe under ejector with rag or brush. If in a hurry you can put oil on a swab and run it down the barrel and all chambers in the cylinder. Wipe the swab on a rag or paper towel and run it through again to dry out the chambers and barrel. Finish with dry patches when you have time. I usually just squeeze the swab with paper towel until it looks clean, and run it through until it comes out clean, but I am lazy. Others will have more current advice (I have been using nothing but gun oil for many years). Copper coated 22 bullets do not usually leave lead in the barrel. Copper coated or jacketed probably keep the flashgap cleaner (again, preventing cylinder binding)

Revolvers - Smith & Wesson

This is a nice first revolver. Use snap caps when dry firing.

I disagree. I EDC an SA XDm 9mm w/ a round chambered. It has three safeties 1. Grip 2. Trigger and 3. Drop. When I reholster I dont depress the grip safety, it wont discharge if something snags the trigger without the grip safety engaged. It blocks the trigger and slide.

A firearm is only as safe as the operator.

See: when you're old (an old timer) we relate more to "wheel guns". Rather than those plastic things they call firearms; with so many safety's that you get your bugger picker hung up.

Give me a Snubby or an "L" frame .357, I'm so happy!

I do carry my 1911's chambered, cocked and locked. But i prefer the CZ pistols with the double action on the first shot chambered of course ahead of time. I think the CZ's are the safest carry pistols. Revolvers are no problem to carry.

My choice of CCW carry right now is my new S&W Model 58 in 41mag or my CZ82 in 9mm makarov. I don't carry my 1911's that often.

Anything that moves will wear out and can and will break. The chance of 2 going bad at the same time is slim but it could happen or one could go bad and you not know it and then another part go bad. Most AD and ND are autoloading pistols. Cocked and locked would be safer if the retaining strap goes between the frame and hammer. Larry

That is why maintenace/function checks are important, regardless of the firearm. You do, do that, right? I would like to see the research that shows autos have more ND's and if so why? When there were only revolvers, ND's were 100 percent revolvers. Now that autos are on the scene and there are more on the street in civilian, militay and LEO hands than revolvers you can expect the rate to falsely look higher. Look at the whole picture. I wonder if the flint/wheel lock crowd thought revolvers were "unsafe" too.

Default Nothing completely safe

The only totally safe car is one that is locked in the garage and has the drive shaft removed. And doors locked from the outside, with keys in safe deposit box at bank. And perhaps a cyclone fence around it so no kid could ever break a window or damage a tire.

I remember being impressed by a large cities police riot holsters that had one thumb safety on the gun and three on the holster. In an extreme emergency the guy stabbing him or a third party might get a few extra stabs in. Much safer for the criminal.

That said, I see no laws presently being introduced by our lawmakers that solve the New Town shooting. He first killed his sleeping mother and took her guns. The Mother’s guns would need to be locked in a safe at all times, and her bedroom door securely locked and barred so she could sleep safely. The combination to her gun safe could only be in her head and/or in a safe deposit box.

Kitchen cutting and chopping knives need to be locked in a knife safe. Axes in garage or storage shed need to be locked in a axe safe.

All that said, modern American made revolvers, by major manufacturers, with basic internal safeties that require the trigger to be all the way back for the hammer to hit the firing pin, or transfer energy to the firing pin, are the safest handguns for the majority of new users. Single shot break action .22 pistols have been nice target shooting handguns for a very long time. Safe if one only cocks it when aimed at target, then fires it only when safe to do so.
At a shooting range there are many rules, the first being that no one is handling any loaded gun when any other person is downrange. The automatic targets that are retrieved by electric cable are the safest.

Nothing is completely safe. People choke on food every day.

I recall a story about a prison gun tower some time after bullet proof glass installed. The tower guard accidentally fired the shotgun. He said he was not hit, but remembered quickly being on the floor behind the toilet as buckshot bounced around for what seemed like a very long time.
